Refractive Index Experiment Report

This document appears to be a physics project report on measuring the focal length of a glass convex lens and a liquid lens combination. It includes an introduction, aim of the experiment, apparatus required, theory behind lens combinations and refractive index calculations. The procedure involves finding the focal length of the convex lens alone and then with a liquid lens combination. Observations are recorded in a table and calculations are shown to determine the focal length and refractive index of the liquid. Conclusions and bibliography are also included at the end.

Aim :

To find the refractive index of a liquid by using a

convex lens and a plane mirror.

Apparatus Required :
A convex lens, a plane mirror, clean transparent liquid
in a beaker, an optical needle,(a thick knitting needle
passed through a rubber cork), an iron stand with
base and clamp arrangement, plumb line, plane glass
slab, a spherometer, half meter scale etc.

Diagram :

Theory :
If f1 and f2 be the focal length of glass convex lens and
liquid lens and F be the focal length of their
combination then,

Liquid lens formed is a planoeconcave lens with R 1 = R
(radius of curvature of convex lens surface), R2 =
infinity
From lens makers formula,
1/f2 = (n-1) * ( 1/ R1 1/R2)
1/f2 = (n-1)/ R

(or)

n= 1 + R/ f2

Putting value of f2 , n can be calculated.

Procedure :
(a) For focal length of convex lens :

[Link] any one convex lens and find its rough

focal length.
[Link] a plane mirror and place it on the
horizontal base of the iron stand.
[Link] the convex lens on the plane mirror.
[Link] tight the optical needle in the clamp
of the stand and hold it horizontally above
the lens at distance equal to its rough focal
length.
[Link] the tip of the needle at the vertical
principal axis of the lens, so that tip of the
needle appears touching the tip of its image.
[Link] the needle up and down and remove
parallax between tips of the needle and its
image.
[Link] distance between tip and upper
surface of the lens by using a plumb line and
half meter scale.
[Link] measure distance between tip and the
surface of its plane mirror.
(b) For focal length of the combination :
[Link] a few drops of transparent liquid on the
plane mirror and put the convex lens over it
with its same face above as before (A plane
concave liquid lens is formed between plane
mirror and convex lens).
10. Repeat steps 6, 7 and 8.
11. Record your observations as given below.
(c) For radius of curvature of convex lens surface :
