Task 5

In this task I will be conducting various research for different music genres
to help me decide which genre would be the better choice for me to base
my own magazine around. This research will also help me to establish my
target audience and what they would like to see in a music magazine for a
certain genre. This will help me with my planning as I will gain more
knowledge about who my target audience should be and understand more
about my chosen genre as this information will help with the final product.
I will also discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each music genre and
show some ideas that I have for my magazine itself.
Pop Top of the Pops
Top of the Pops, was a British music chart
television programme, made by the BBC and it
was usually shown on Thursday evenings on
BBC1. The programme mainly consisted of
performances from some of that week's bestselling popular music artists and also with a
rundown of that week's singles chart. The weekly
show was cancelled, but the Christmas special
has continued. Was launched in February 1995
and the show was created by Johnnie Stewart.
The magazine mainly consists of celebrities and
their gossip, fashion, beauty advice etc. Articles
on pop and movie stars/interviews with
celebrities, quizzes, horoscopes, posters, song
lyrics etc. Mainly aimed at pre teens and
confirms to dominant ideology as it targets a
younger market whos interested in celebrities
and new stars.
Urban/ Hip-hop - Vibe
Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine
founded by a producer called Quincy Jones. The
publication features R&B and hip-hop music
artists, actors and other entertainers. The
production happened to have shut down in
Summer 2009 and then Vibe was purchased by
the private equity investment fund InterMedia
Partners. The magazine is issued every-other
month with double covers and has a larger
online presence. Vibe tends to target the young,

urban followers of hip-hop culture. In the recent

years of 2014, the magazine was moved onlineonly. The magazine wanted to feature a broader
range of interest than its closest competitors.

Rock Kerrang!
Kerrang! is a UK-based magazine with a genre
of rock music published by Bauer Media Group.
The magazine was first published on 6 June
1981and was edited by Geoff Barton as a one-off
supplement in the Sounds newspaper. Kerrang!
was initially devoted to the New Wave of British
Heavy Metal and the rise of hard rock acts. In the
early 2000s it became the best-selling British
music newspaper. Angus Young of AC/DC
appeared on Kerrang!'s first cover. Launched as
a monthly magazine, Kerrang! began to appear
on a fortnightly basis later, and in 1987 it went
weekly. The original owner was United
Newspapers who then sold it to EMAP in 1991.
