Upgraded markets officially handed over in Benque Viejo del Carmen and Belmopan
Residents of Benque Viejo del Carmen and Belmopan are now benefitting from improved market infrastructure
thanks to works which have been completed under the EU funded Belize Rural Development Project (BRDP). The
markets were officially inaugurated yesterday (Monday, January 19) and this morning (Tuesday, January 20). Under
the Belize Rural Development Project, the proper and effective management of markets across Belize is being
addressed, namely Independence, Benque, Belmopan and Punta Gorda.
The new market infrastructure have improved the health and safety of the facilities and the quality of produce which
are sold at the locations, eliminating contamination which would have occurred in the past, provided easier access
and a more welcoming environment for vendors and consumers.
The Benque Viejo del Carmen Market is now a developed 6000 square foot plaza which facilitates permanent
stalls; paved parking spaces, an upgraded recreational area which features a gazebo and beautification through
added green spaces. All the stalls facing the new plaza and green areas are connected with covered walkways. The
rehabilitation of the market was done at a cost of just over 252,000 or BZ$) 649,000.

The Belmopan Market now provides a sense of pride for vendors as well as the general public. The facility which
is now considered one of the attractions in the town centre boasts paved and defined parking spaces, a section of
which will be used to facilitate stalls, green areas, a recreational area including a gazebo and refurbished facilities at
the Civic Centre building. The total cost of the upgrades to the Belmopan Market were 776, 000, or just under
BZ$2 million.

Both areas have been retrofitted with the standard electrical and plumbing fixtures.
Ambassador Paola Amadei, Head of Delegation for the European Union to Belize commended the contractors for
the quality and timely delivery of the works. She explained that the projects are in line with the EU's practice of
ensuring that developments are not only sustainable but impact the community. "Economic growth is the most
important means of reducing poverty in the developing world we must do what we can to maintain them and
increase the opportunity for poor people to support their families and build more stable futures. The stalls and
facilities here in . will go a long way in achieving that."
