I chose to research Andrew Carnegie as my National History Day topic because I wanted to
pick someone controversial in history. Some people dislike him because of his wealth but I think his
legacy is unmatched when it comes to the work he did for our country and the way he lived his life.
He did not live for glory and gave back to society. He first became successful through the steel
industry which aided the development of transportation, jobs, and our economy. He also provided
society knowledge through philanthropy. I thought of researching Carnegie when I learned about him
in Social Studies class. My teacher explained how robber barons are bad and tried to destroy their
competition. We also learned about how America eventually outlawed all trusts. I decided to research
the other side to this story. This sparked me to believe that I should research Andrew Carnegie
because no man who spent roughly 77% of $450 million on human education and peace is deserved
to be labeled as a harsh business criminal.
I researched my product using a variety of tools, mainly books, databases from the local
virtual reference center, and newspaper articles. These helped me find historical facts, evidence,
opinions, and visual aids. Some of my favorite sources included the 6 articles I found from the
Biography Reference Center. Out of all those sources I preferred the one by Geoffrey Tweedale. I
liked that it provided quality facts and information backed up by even better evidence. I also gained
some insight about Carnegie from a 45 minute online movie by [Link]. It provided as much
facts as you can get from a large essay but with actual quotes and many pictures.
I chose to make a website since I love to use technology. I know much about computers
making it easy and quick to build a substantially constructed website. I also was able to use many
programs to add videos, sounds, music, and slideshows that I would not be able to do with an exhibit.
(With the exception of documentaries.) I also found it the easiest choice because I have done a
website before in 7th and 8th grades. I also love the website because I can express myself the easiest
and does not cost any money.
My project relates to the theme of leadership and legacy since Andrew Carnegie exhibited
both. He was leader through his own determination, education and intelligence. For example, he
knew his product would change the world. He also led the steel industry changing it from a delicacy
to a mass-produced necessity. Andrew Carnegie also created a huge legacy. He created steel which
led to taller buildings, elevators, and many more things that we take for granted today. He also
provided for human education and entertainment by creating libraries and performing arts centers.
Finally, his morals and way of life can easily be used to help anyone excel in life. He was truly
influential and his leadership and legacy will live on.
