Upon hearing this years theme, leadership and legacy in history, I tried to think of a
leader who added an interesting flavor to the world. Rather than the many leaders who rose to
fame through common achievements, such as inventors or politicians, I wished to learn more
about the life of the oddballs in history. This thought eventually led to look into the people of
societys undergrounds, as most criminals are not usually sane. Pablo Escobar happened to
satisfy my requirements when I came across an anecdote about a billionaire, psychopath, and
drug lord who built a luxurious prison for himself to be in captive.
My research began through online encyclopedias and recent articles for some general
information. The research then went more in-depth by finding more reliable and informative
sources on the web, such as academic journals and documentaries. Unfortunately, as Escobar is a
Colombian, not many books or people were available in the vicinity to inform about my topic.
Along with a few books from my local library, I utilized the web for some e-books as well. I also
visited some foreign sites for more images and the Colombians view of my topic using my fouryear experience with Spanish and a reliable translator. Some governmental sites were also useful
in acquiring some files related to Escobar. Eventually, a thesis was formed, and notes were taken
structurally to support the outline.
I chose the website because I enjoy creating visual projects and working with technology.
For this project, I focused on organizing the information to be simple and user-friendly like other
modern websites. Adding many images, I made the site to be more visually interesting; other
multimedia elements helped it to become more interactive to users.
Amongst the charismatic individuals who have had great influence in history, Pablo
Escobar was indeed a unique leader with great influence to the condition of current Colombia,
drug wars, and drug cartels. As a successful yet cruel drug lord, Escobar eventually gained
enough power to control Colombia from the shadows. He also once controlled the majority of the
cocaine traffic to the United States and became one of the richest people on earth. By using this
wealth and power, he helped out the poor of his community while inflicting cruel actions against
the high society at the same time, leaving both blessings and scars of his existence throughout
Colombia. Such remnants can be considered as both beneficial and problematic legacies of
Escobar from his particular leadership in history.
