TASK 1:
Writing a personal
response
I choose the short story The Necklace which was authored by Henri Rene
Albert Guy de Maupassant. This story is about a pretty and charming young lady
named Mathilde Loisel.
The moral value that I learn from this story is you must be contented for what
you already have. Mathilde feels upset because she does not expensive jewelry to
attend the ministerial ball. She decided to borrow the diamond necklace her friend,
Madame Forestier. Unfortunately, Mathilde loses the necklace at the night of the ball.
She and her husband works hard about ten years just to pay back the money they
lend to get the substitute necklace. Then, she finds out that the necklace that the
necklace she borrows from her friends is just a paste diamond necklace. If she
contented for what she already have, she would never borrow the necklace and the
necklace would not lose.
Besides that, I also learn that honesty is the policy. When the Loisel and her
husband discover the necklace is gone, they decide to cover up for what had
happened. Instead of going to Madame Forestier and explaining, they choose to lie
about it. It turns out that if they had told the truth, they could have saved themselves
from ten long years of hard work.
The Necklace reminded me of a time in my own life when I lied to my friend.
I lose her book and I told her that I already give her book back. Then, she found out
that I lied to her. She was very upset and she did not wanted to be my friend again. I
was very regret for what happened. If I tell her the truth and being honest to her, I
would never lose her. The story proves in a very powerful way that no matter how
much anger or pain it causes, telling the truth is usually the best route to take in
solving a problem.
TASK 2:
REFLECTION
REFLECTION ESSAY
When I got the assignment task from Mr. Tingang, I am very excited but at the
same time I am quite blurred about it. We are been asking to read the short and write
our personal response about the short story. Writing essay is the one of most things
that I have learnt in previous semester. However, I still forget what the items are and
what kind of essays it is. Thus, this assignment had reminded me back about writing
essay. I am quite worried about the essay because I am not really good in it.
However, when I am doing the assignment task, I get a lot of good benefits
from it. The first thing that I learn by doing this assignment is I manage to improve
my English skills. I was not very good in English. When I read The Necklace, there
are a lot of words that I cannot understand. For example, I do not know the meaning
of ecstatically. I have to seek the meaning of the word from dictionary. Then I found
that ecstatically means a person who has periods of intense trancelike joy. But at the
same time, I also learn a lot of new words which can improve my vocabulary.
Besides that, while I am doing the assignment, I become more disciplined
than before. When the assignment was being given to me, the date to submit
assignment task is already set by the lecturer. When I submit the assignment task on
time, I will become a punctual person and also disciplined person.
In addition, I also learn about the moral values when I read The Necklace.
One of the moral values is the honesty. I learn honesty is very important in our life
especially as a teacher to be. As a future teacher, I must become an honest person.
This is because if I am not being honest, people will hate me and my students will
also hate me. Therefore, we must being honest, so our life would not be filled with
lies, but being filled with love.
Last but not least, I really hope that all the good benefits that I got by doing
the assignment will be advantages for me in the future. And I hope this assignment
will fulfill the entire requirement needed.
