The Protestant Reformation Overview

The Protestant Reformation began in the 1500s as a religious movement that split the Christian church in Western Europe. Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses criticizing church abuses like selling indulgences, which led to furious debate and the growth of Protestantism. Luther's teachings emphasized faith and scripture over church authority and rituals. His ideas spread rapidly through printing and were adopted by German princes and common people, though peasants revolts were suppressed. Religious divisions hardened over time, with the Peace of Augsburg in 1555 allowing each prince to choose Catholicism or Lutheranism for their lands. Calvinism also emerged, emphasizing predestination, and Geneva established a theocracy based on Calvin's teachings.
