Government focuses on getting mentally
unwell people back into a world of work
THE government has launched a
2million pilot scheme to help people
on benefits with mental health prob-
lems back into work.
Ministers explained that the new
voluntary schemes offer tailored psy-
chological therapy and employment
advice to people on Employment and
Support Allowance.
Once an individual has elected to
take part, Jobcentre staff will refer
them for personalised support, which
could include help with applying for
jobs, going to interviews and coping
with any rejections.
Government figures show that cur-
rently only 37 per cent of those with
mental health issues are in employ-
ment, and the wider costs of poor
mental health to the national econo-
my are between 30 and 40bn a year.
Trials of the scheme, developed in
partnership with the Centre for Men-
tal Health, will run for six months in
Durham and Tees Valley, Shropshire
and Telford, Sussex and Wolverhamp-
ton.
Norman Lamb, care and support
minister, said: I want to build a fairer
society and that means people with
mental health problems must get the
help they need to find and stay in
work. Having the right job is good for
mental health, which is why were
working to develop the best possible
support for those stuck in a cycle of
unemployment and poor health.
Tom Pollard , campaigns manager at
mental health charity Mind, wel-
comed the pilots saying that people
with mental health problems experi-
ence a number of barriers to getting
into, and staying in work
We have long been calling for a
more personalised and tailored ap-
proach to back-to-work support for
people with mental health problems.
However, he criticised the current
system, where, he said, many people
with mental health problems are
being pressured to accept support,
which is often unhelpful or inappro-
priate.
The threat of benefits being with-
drawn if people fail to engage with
these activities is creating greater
anxiety and pushing people further
from work, he warned.
However, the government said the
pilot schemes would not lead to a
compulsory system where receiving
therapy would be a condition of indi-
viduals retaining their benefits.
Pollard also urged recruiters and HR
to play a bigger role. We also need to
see employers be more willing to take
on people with mental health prob-
lems, make adjustments to help them
stay in work.
