GUIDANCE NOTES

You are advised to read the following notes carefully as, unless other selection techniques are used, the decision to shortlist
you for interview will be based solely on the information you provide in the Application Form. This advice is designed to help
you complete the Application Form as thoroughly as possible.
When completed, read through your Application Form, checking for errors or gaps. heck the closing date and make sure
your application is sent in plenty of time because late applications will only be considered in e!ceptional circumstances. The
forms should be returned to the address on the advertisement"Application Form.
HOW WILL YOU KNOW WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR?
The #ob advertisement describes the skills, e!perience and qualifications we are looking for, and this forms the basis against
which you will be assessed. The #ob description and person specification will be enclosed with your Application Form, to
show the main duties, responsibilities and personal attributes of the post. You should read them carefully and try to identify
the key words and phrases.
DO YOU HAVE WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR?
From the information in the advertisement, #ob description and person specification work out if you have the skills,
knowledge and e!perience we are seeking. $f not, show how you have used them in the past. %o not forget that skills can be
transferable. The tasks you perform may not be the same as those in the #ob you are applying for, but the skills you use to
carry out those tasks may be the same.
&emember that the skills and e!periences you have gained outside paid work, for e!ample, from domestic responsibilities,
unpaid or voluntary work or organising social or community activities can demonstrate skills you have taken for granted
which could be a clear sign of your ability to do a #ob.

$ am e!tremely interested in the post of 6ehaviour .upport Worker at .t Thomas8 D Bunior .chool
and, having visited your school website, $ am e!cited at the prospect of #oining .t Thomas8 Bunior
.chool because the school8s ethos and values very much mirror my own personal values and ethos of
education. $ meet the criteria as detailed in the personel specification and believe that $ would make a
positive contribution to .t Thomas8s Bunior .chool.
%uring my career to date $ have gained vast e!perience in caring for, and supporting the education of
many children with a range of varied and differing needs. $ have worked with children across the
)rimary age range, and have a working knowledge of the primary school curriculum, and in particular
the Darly years curriculum. 2y current role as a key worker within &eception involves supporting
children with their personal, social and emtional development as well as across the other prime and
specific areas of the early years curriculum. /bservations are key to identifying the ne!t learning steps
for childrenP this requires me to be effective in my information gathering and record keeping. $ have
e!perience working with individuals and groups of children with idenified special needs at .chool Action
and .chool Action )lus as well as those with a full statement of needs. This has included children who
have had behavioural and emotional difficulties and who have individual education plans to address
their barriers to learning. $ have the ability to understand and find reasons behind a child8s behaviour,
and am therefore able to find a solution to try and help the child learn new behaviours which can lead to
inclusion and success. When presented with challenging behaviours $ use a nurturing approach and
understand the importance of de?escalation, praise and positive reinforcement. Within the school
setting $ have provided full time support on a one to one basis for a boy who was highly autistic, and
who needed specialist support. $t is imperative that all children are provided with the opportunity to
progress and that barriers to learning are addressed in order to ensure access to the curriculum. With
this child $ brought the learning to a level that he could understand and used approaches which
motivated him. Ce improved in some areas of understanding and practical application, however it was
ultimately decided that his needs would be best met by attending a specialist school for autism. When
supporting individual children $ promote confidence and independence and believe in appropriate praise
and positive reinforcement. Throughout my career $ have developed e!cellent behaviour management
strategies and always work in accordance with the school policies and procedure. $ believe that
motivation, understanding, empathy and catering for a variety of learning styles are central to a child8s
development and $ often find myself thinking on my feet and differentiating the curriculum or approach
to meet individual needs. $ am very patient and child centererd in my approach but also believe that
e!pectations should be high, attainable and realistic.
2y work in supporting children with differing needs prompted me to further e!pand my knowledge and
e!perience to equip me to become more effective in helping children with specific learning needs. 2y
interest in .pecial Dducational 4eeds compelled me to specialise in .pecial Dducational 4eeds and
last year $ built on my 4M=F in hildrens8 care, learning and development by embarking on a level ,
Advanced %iploma in .pecial Dducational 4eeds. 2y elective modules were Autism, .ocial, Dmotional
and 6ehavioural difficulties and inclusive practice. $ thoroughly en#oyed my studies, which have helped
to inform my practice within the workplace. As a result $ have identified children within the &eception
unit with specific difficulties or potential barriers to learning. Darly intervention is of vital importance and
within the past year $ have been instrumental in highlighting two children who require additional supportP
one who has social difficulties and another with very low self esteem and is displaying barriers to
learning. As a result these children have had focussed interventions in order to help with their difficulty.
Within my current setting $ have gained e!perience of working with a number of e!ternal agencies
including the pre + service, Dducational psychologists and ommunication and Aanguage departments,
for which $ provided detailed and accurate records of progress and learning difficulties. $ am able to
communciate effectively and recognise the importance of effective liaison and communication with
outside agencies and listen carefully to their advice in order to enable me to help and support individual
children as much as possible.
$ believe that the involvement of parents in school life is vital and working one?to?one has meant that
my relationship with parents has to be strong and positive for my work to be effective. $ ensure that $
communicate with parents regualry and ask their advice on what works best with their child. $t is
essential that strong working relationships are forged as the biggest influence upon children is in the
home and it is important to work together to adopt a consistent approach to enable the child to develop
the skills that they need for the future.
$ strive to maintain a safe working environment for all children and have knowledge of child protection
procedures and safeguarding. $ am an e!cellent team player and recognise the importance of working
as part of a team, especially in relation to working with children. Whilst $ am a reflective practitioner and
listen to the advice of others $ am also able to use my initiative and respond calmly and fle!ibly to
situations as they arise. $ quickly develop positive professional working relationships with colleagues
and childrenP $ relate well to young people and am considerate of any e!ternal factors that may affect
participation. At all times $ am professional and my calm manner and communication skills, both verbal
and written, are an asset. These skills have certainly proved to be valuable when $ have trained
colleagues in order to increase their knowledge and skills to do a #ob successfully.
$ am confident that $ possess all the necessary qualifications, skills and e!perience in order to
successfully fulfill the requirements of this post. )roficient in the use of $T $ am confident in the use of
2icrosoft Word and emails. $ am a positive, enthusiastic and lively individual and have a good sense of
humour. 2y own personal values and beliefs ensure that $ would uphold the ethos and values of .t
Thomas8 D Bunior .chool. $n my spare time $ en#oy an active lifestyle, regularly running and supporting
my children in their various sporting events. $ am also heavily involved in the children8s work at the
church $ regularly attend. This involves some small group teaching, playing games and promoting
active involvement from the children in activities on offer. $ have also helped in the running of a special
needs unit for the children who are unable to #oin the larger groups due to their difficulties. This has
included providing relevant activities, helping children access these activities and providing information
that can inform future practices to further develop this service.
Thank you for taking the time to read my application and $ welcome the opportuity to discuss my
e!perience and suitability for the post at interview.
