Goals
A. The media center staff will maintain a climate that will focus on students' growth in factual knowledge and technological
knowledge. According to page 8 Empowering Learners, one of the missions of the school library program is to instruct
students and assist educators in using, evaluating, and producing information and ideas through active use of a broad range
of appropriate tools, resources, and information technologies. To move the media center into the 21
st
century students and
teachers must be instructed and guided on how to use new technologies and online tools correctly. Also from Empowering
Learners on page 12, it states that students need to develop information skills that will enable them to use technology as an
important tool for learning.
B. The media center staff will provide access to materials that support a wide range of student interests, needs, and abilities.
On page 18 of Empowering Learners, it states that as media specialist we advocate for reading not just for pleasure, but we
are to also support reading comprehension skills across all formats. We find books that interest students and then tie the
needs and abilities with the interests.
C. The media center staff will assist teachers in the development of units that connect to the CCGPS. The school librarian
guides instructional design by working with the classroom teacher to establish learning objectives and goals, and by
implementing assessment strategies before, during, and after assigned units of study (Empowering Learners, 17).
D. The media center staff will arrange the physical space of the media center to better accommodate a variety of learning tasks
that include information seeking, collaborating, communicating, reading, and the use of multimedia formats. To promote
leisure reading across all learning needs in the media center we have to create a friendly, comfortable, well-lit,
aesthetically pleasing, and ergonomic space that is centrally located and well integrated with the rest of the school
(Empowering Learners, 33). It also states that to meet and support the school curriculum as well as meet the diverse needs
of all learners the media specialist needs to provide space and seating that enhances and encourages technology use, leisure
reading and browsing, and use of materials in all formats (Empowering Learners, 33).

suggest books and materials that
are age and grade appropriate that
coincide with the Reading and

The media specialist will develop
a lesson for each grade that will
last for two consecutive days at
the beginning of each school year.
The first lesson will first
introduce the students to the
media center and the procedures
for use including visits, computer
use, and the checkout of materials.
The lesson on the second day will

be an interactive lesson showing
the students the different sections
of the media center, how to check
out/in materials, and how to
access information using the WiFi
from their technology devices.
Each consecutive year will consist
of reviewing the information from
the previous year then introducing
new materials, use of technology,
and any changes in procedures.
1.3 To provide
materials print, non-
print, and electronic
for research and
reference.

The media specialist will utilize
the Destiny database software
program reports to keep
information as accurate as
possible. Teachers and students
may use any computer in the
school building to locate the
availability of materials. Usage
and inventory reports can be
conducted by scanning barcodes
throughout the school year by
section if time allows. However,
with the help of community or
school volunteers, an annual
inventory will be conducted at the
end of each school year.

Once the information is gathered,
reports are printed to determine
materials that are lost, checked
out, missing, or discarded. This
helps determine what materials

survey will be given to all
teachers and staff at the end of
each school year to determine

results will help determine new
workshops to offer for the
following year and improvements
or changes to those to be offered

2.2 To provide
materials and resources
to be integrated into
the schools
curriculum.

The media specialist will have
collaborative meetings with the
teachers from each grade level
every month to discuss materials
and resources needed for the
teachers units. Through these
meetings the teachers become
knowledgeable about what
materials and resources are
available to the students. Also,
this allows the media specialist
time to verify which materials and
resources are available for use and

set up a schedule for checkout by
the teachers for classroom.
2.3 To provide
opportunities for
collaboration between
teachers,
administrators, and the
media specialist on
developing units that
connect to the CCGPS.

The media specialist will
collaborate with teachers and
administrators at the beginning of
the year, monthly, and at the end
of the year. At the beginning of
each year administrators will meet
with teachers by grade level and
the media specialist to discuss the
first two units of study. This
information will allow the media
specialist to locate and prepare the
materials and resources for class
studies. The following monthly
meetings will be held with the
grade level chairs and
administrators. The grade level
chairs will provide the media
specialist with a list of suggested
materials and resources needed by
the other teachers within their
grade.

Teachers are asked to evaluate
materials and resources used to
determine if will keep in the
collection for use again. The
collaborative meetings will be
evaluated by a four question
comment card survey. This will
help all involved persons to know
what needs to be changed,
improved, kept, or discarded from
the collaboration meetings.

Ongoing through
the year.
2.4 To participate in
programs for the
continuing professional
growth of the school
faculty.

The media specialist will
participate in any workshops
available to the faculty of the
school. If needed, the media
specialist can collaborate with the
teachers to see what areas of
professional growth need to be
held. Participation in the
professional growth of the school
faculty will show that the media

specialist is willing to learn and
grow with the school faculty. This
will also help the media specialist
see the changes in standards and
curriculum that may occur within
the school during the school year.
Goal D The media center staff will arrange the physical space of the media center to better accommodate a
variety of learning tasks that include information seeking, collaborating, communicating, reading, and
the use of multimedia formats.
1.5 To provide a space
and materials for
leisure reading.

The media specialist set up an
area of the media center that can
be easily monitored yet allows
students to have a place of
comfort to read for pleasure or an
assignment. The media specialist
will have comfortable seating for
the students and suggested books
in the area for the students to read.
The media specialist will
collaborate with teachers to make
the leisure reading area a special
reward for students. The students
may come to the media center for
twenty minutes to have leisure
reading time during a designated
part of the day. The media
specialist will have a beginning of
the year meeting to discuss the
idea with teachers and if approved
then it would be ongoing
throughout the school year.

The media specialist will give

How Goals Are Met
Meeting the goals I set for the media center is crucial for the success of the media center program. I will know if the materials
and resources I have in the media center are the appropriate ones by results of the students classroom test scores and the
benchmark test scores. If the students have the correct materials and resources to complete classroom assignments then grades
should improve. This will be clearly shown by the students who have special needs. If those students have the appropriate
materials to help them during class or on classroom assignments then their grades should improve as well.
When the students look forward to coming to media center more to check out books then I will know that the selection of
books and materials I have available interests them and they are reading. The more books of interest the students have available
then the more likely they will see reading as pleasurable instead of something that is required of them in the classroom. It will also
tell me that the ability level of the books isnt too high or too low for the students.
Assisting teachers with their curriculum units will show the teachers that I want to be a part of the classroom and be there as a
guide or another helping hand. When the teachers continue to ask me to assist them then I will know that my input is helping them.
When the teachers give me feedback on the materials and resources that will also help me continue to keep an updated list for the
media center. When materials and resources are kept up-to-date then the teachers are more likely to use what is in the media center
instead of finding their own resources. I will also know I am helping the teachers by feedback from the students and
administrators. When the students are happy with the resources during a unit then that lets me know that the collaboration efforts
between the media specialist and the teachers was successful. The feedback from the administrators will also let me know how
successful the units were. If a teacher provides negative comments about a unit I assisted on then I will consider it constructive
criticism and encourage that teacher to discuss how we can improve communication and work together to provide the appropriate
materials and resources to ensure student success.
Having a leisure space for students to read is very important to me. When students have a place to call their own for some quiet
reading time, then students are more willing to want to read. Even if the time is only twenty to thirty minutes of quiet reading time
it will still allow the students to read. Also, having the leisure space just for students will show the students that I care enough
about them to give them their own space. It will show that I want them to read and enjoy reading and not just read because they
were told it was required. I will know that the leisure space is a success when I have to schedule times for students to come to
media center to read because there are too many that want to come.
