Welcome to St. Columbas Early Years
Unit and in particular to Reception.
We expect to very busy this half term
learning letters and sounds and
introducing the Oxford Reading Tree
characters.
There will be a reading meeting on
Thursday 9th October at 3.15 to explain
how reading is taught and how you can
help your child at home. Following that
meeting the children will start to take a
book home to read.
If there is anything that you wish to
discuss please dont hesitate to come in.

In this area the children will be encouraged to take turns and share,
work as part of a group and form good relationships with adults and
children. This will be done through circle time and small group
activities.
The children will be learning how to move
safely with confidence and imagination
around, under, over and through a range
of equipment. They will also be practising
getting themselves dressed and undressed
independently in preparation for PE.
Thursday is P.E. day; please make sure
your childs kit is in school.
The children will be learning to count to 10
and beyond, as well as recognising numbers
to 10 and finding 1 more than a given
number. They will also be focusing on shape
and size using the vocabulary big, small,
bigger, biggest, large, smaller, and
smallest.
The children will be learning about Gods
World. They will have the opportunity to
hear about the things that God has created
and to know that He asks us to care for our
world. The children will begin to appreciate
that God made each one of us different and
special and that he cares for us all.
The children will be singing a range of counting
and nursery rhymes. They will use different
media to experiment with colour, shape,
texture and form, as well as developing their
imagination through role play and small world
resources.
We will be focusing on using good speaking and listening
skills and encouraging the children to speak clearly with
confidence and control.
The children will be encouraged to mark
make within the continuous provision
areas, and will be introduced to Letters
and Sounds which helps the children to
learn their initial sounds and supports
them on their journey when learning to
read and write. They will also meet the
Oxford Reading Tree characters.
Our Inquiry is Ourselves. We will be
talking about why we need families and
friends; how we can make and keep
friends; what we do with our families and
how our families are similar but different.
We will also celebrate Harvest before half
term.
