Restore MSCONFIG in Windows XP

The customer's computer was running slowly, unable to save documents despite having little files, and had weird font issues in Internet Explorer. When the technician tried to run msconfig from Run to check for startup programs and viruses, it gave an error that msconfig could not be found. Viruses often remove important system files like msconfig. The technician determined msconfig.exe was located in the Windows/System32/Config folder and showed how to restore it by copying from another computer or using the command line if only the Windows installation disk was available. He also checked the registry for the correct path to msconfig and ensured both the file and registry path were correct to resolve the issue running msconfig from Run.

Yesterday I got a report from my customer that her computer is being

infected by virus. Her description of the problem in her computer was


computer is slow, cant save any documents because her hard drive is nearly
full although she doesnt have much files, and Internet Explorer font is weird.
The first thing that I always do before anything is run !"#$%I& '!ystem
"onfiguration (tility) and chec* the startup entries there. Its not the best
tool to chec* for every programs that starts up with +indows, but its a basic
one which is able to give me a rough idea if the computer is infected by virus
or not.
+hen I go to !tart, ,un, type !"#$%I& and clic* #-, I got the error
message .Windows cannot find msconfig. Make sure you typed the
name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start
button, and then click Search./
(sually virus is the culprit for removing msconfig, regedit and etc from ,un
command. 0nyway, heres how I manage to bring bac* !"#$%I& to the ,un
command.
%irst of all, we need to ma*e sure that the !"#$%I& file is still in your
drive. !urprisingly !"[Link] is not located in +indows or !ystem12
directory. Two ways to find where !"[Link] is. You can either use
+indows search to loo* for 3msconfig3 or go to another computer, use
4rocess Explorer to find the path to !"onfig.
0s you can see, 4rocess Explorer clearly shows that !"[Link] is located
in C!Windows!"C#ealth!#elpCtr!$inaries!MSConfig.e%e.
&o to "56+indows64"Health6Help"tr67inaries6 and chec* if !"[Link] file
is there or not. If its not there, you can copy it from another computer to the
7inaries folder or if you only have +indows 84 "9, open a command prompt
window, insert your 84 "9 into the drive and enter the following command5
'assuming 9 is your "9 drive and " is where your +indows is installed)

That should restore !"[Link] to your +indows. I% !"[Link] is
already there and you still cant launch !"#$%I& from ,un command, then
the reference to the path within the registry may be wrong. "hec* this
location in the registry5

#nce you have both !"[Link] file in your computer and the registry path
is set correctly, you shouldnt have problems running msconfig command
from ,un.
