BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In todays world, technology is coming in a very fast pace. Various products are popping
out in the market in a sudden rate. Tablets, being one of those technological products that have a
rapid growth are driving a wave of adoption more quickly than that of laptops and smartphones.
Considering that this invention was introduced in the early 1990s, it is just now that its sales are
booming and every individual wants a piece of it. But, why have a tablet? It is said that its more
portable and lightweight, just having around 7-10 inches screen size compared to laptops which
makes it easier to put inside our bags. It also said that it is better to use for presentations/ gaming/
web browsing as it has a bigger screen compared to mobile phones. Lastly, there is an overall fun
is using a tablet.

Tablets are the hottest new form factor in computing and offer people a new way to
interface with data and applications. It's been a long journey, longer than you might think, but
you know a piece of technology has reached a key moment when your non-geeky friends start
talking about it and, more importantly, owning and using it. That's what's happened to tablets,
which in the past year have gone from a piece of kit generally used only by the tech savvy to
something owned by people of all ages and with all levels of technical ability. So, who currently
uses tablets and what for? It's a question we almost don't need to ask any more. They are used by
the young and the old, for business and leisure, in the home, on the train and in the office.
The tablet is established, and arguably, just like the desktop PC, the laptop and the mobile
phone before it, has the potential to change our lives. It didn't appear fully formed in the shape of
the iPad in 2010, though. Tablets have a long history, and come from a long held desire to enjoy
computing in the palm of every hand. They could be the future of portable computing, making
notebooks unnecessary for many. Tablets are exciting both for what they are and what they could
be. But how did we get here and where does the future hold?

Raspberry Pi, on the other hand, is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV
and a keyboard. It is a capable little computer which can be used in electronic projects, and for
many things that your common desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word processing and casual
games. It can also play high-definition video. It is based on the Atmel Atmega 644
microcontroller. It has a Broadcom BCM2835 system on a chip (SoC), which includes
an ARM1176JZF-S 700 MHz processor, VideoCore IV GPU,

and was originally shipped with
256 MB of RAM, later upgraded to 512 MB. It does not include a built-in hard disk or solid-state
drive, but it uses an SD card for booting and persistent storage.

OBJECTIVES
1. To innovate a tablet out of the main component raspberry pi and integrate it with other
component such as capacitive touchscreen, wifi module, camera module, bluetooth module.
2. To pioneer a tablet that is unique having a Raspbian Linux-based operating system,
applications that are only for Raspbian operating system, customed boot animation and memory
card slot.
3. To design a tablet that has a creative physical apperance that could securely handle all the
components inside.
4. To interface different components and modules into one working system in order to create a
multifunctional tablet.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1. All new release tablets are the same and accomplish the same things.
2. Dream to write specialized software and to create a tablet that can call it our own.
3. Utilize technology to craft a personal solution to enhance productivity.
4. Raspberry Pi has yet to establish an official community here in the Philippines.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Raspberry Pi, being made by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, is intended to provide a low -
cost computer and software to students. And so, integrating Raspberry Pi with tablets marks the
coming of a tablet that is operated and controlled with the use of the Raspberry Pi, a Raspberry
Pi tablet. With its coming, new knowledge can be imparted to different types of individuals at
different levels of intellect. Some of the entities who will benefit are:

Future Researchers: Further studies can be made. Additional features to the Pi Tablet can be of
great value and importance knowing that a simple tablet can handle complex activities just like
the tablets produced in the market.

Students: Realized how a microcomputer, particularly a Raspberry Pi, be used in assembling
their own tablet. They will be able to build the tablet according to their own ideas and
architecture. It will further enhance their knowledge about computer system and would enable
them to manipulate electronics better.

Professors/Instructors: New means of explaining to their students the capability of a
microcomputer and being able to have better means of showing how a computer system is
developed.

Hobbyist: Having their very own tablets which they themselves have assembled. This will
greatly boost their familiarity and awareness as to what the capacity of a Raspberry Pi is and be
able to maximize its usage.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The scope of our study focuses on the application of Raspberry Pi in order to create a
customized tablet. In order to create a customized Raspberry Pi tablet, we are going to integrate
different components and modules that are tested and compatible with Raspberry Pi. It includes
Wi- Fi shield, Bluetooth, USB 2.0 Ports, Camera Module and an 10 LVDS capacitive touch
screen. We are also going to design the casing/ enclosure of the tablet. We are going to install
Raspbian, a free operating system based and optimized for the Raspberry Pi hardware. This will
provide basic computer functions and ports in form of a tablet plus a small library of Raspbian
compatible applications.

The limitations of this study is that the computing and processing power of a Raspberry
Pi is not that powerful, its power is comparable to a mobile device than a modern PC. Raspberry
Pi hardware is not upgradable. We have to optimize the whole system in order to achieve a
smooth user experience. Some of the components of the tablet are only available abroad because
Raspberry Pi community is not that big here in the Philippines. Due to its hardware limitations, it
can only run operating systems and applications created exclusively for Raspberry Pi.
