0 Introduction
Our country Malaysia is known to the world as an emerging country. The success is
not just dealing with local issues, but it is also involved in addressing the problems
caused by strikes and the international community. Malaysia is also known as a unique
Islamic country. The people come from different racial and ethnic groups, and religious
beliefs. The great majority of its citizens are Muslim Malays. Malaysia is their original
land of birth (Ikmal, 2003).
Although there are multi-ethnic people in the nation, but they can live peaceful, not
like people in other countries are not free of strife, conflict and hostility even though they
consist of same race, same ethnicity and the same belief.
For now, we are towards building the national unity among the people in Malaysia.
There are a little bit problem to achieve national unity because there is a gap that is too
large, especially in terms of economic, political and social development between the
various races. In January 1970, the National Consultative Council (NCC) was
established. The main function of this council is to examine the issues of national unity
and to find ways to solve them. Among the main results of the Council is the Rukun
Negara and the NEP (JPN, 1991).
The declaration of Rukun Negara on August 31 1970, as the national ideology is
intended to thoughts, opinions and feelings of the people of various ethnic groups joined
in the integration and wise without raising sensitive issues that can lead to an
undesirable state (Ismail, 2007).
2.0 National Integration Based On Rukun Negara
National Integration can be defined as close relationship tolerant and deliberately
created among different racial and ethnic groups to achieve common goals in an honest
and sincere. In other words, National Integration is the process of uniting the entire
community to develop a common identity and shared values and feelings of love and
pride of the country (Muthalib, 1997).
In my own words, National Integration is a consolidation process on multi-racial
society, district and province of residence, culture, customs, way of life, backgrounds,
religious and beliefs that is bound by the norms and values of society in order to
achieve the goals of universal and equitable interests and fair.
Unity became a major challenge faced by the Government of Malaysia. The main
issue is the unity of the nine challenges to achieve the goals of Vision 2020 which is
"Establishing a united Malaysian nation with similar goals and can be shared, integrated
in the region and among the people, based on equality and justice"
These challenges relate to the fifth challenges that I have read, "Creating a liberal
and tolerant society with people of different races are free to practice the customs,
cultures and religious beliefs, respectively, and at the same time putting their loyalty to
the nation. It is also associated with the seventh challenge is to "create a culture of
kindness and caring society" a social system that emphasizes community before self,
and welfare of the people is not centered on an individual basis (Tong, 2001).
There are several factors that complicate the process of achieving unity in Malaysia.
The first factor is Belief in God. Every ethnic group has different religions and cultures.
Each race will have different customs, language, arts, culture and value systems. They
are lack of recognition and understanding, and often consider them only the best. This
attitude strengthens the feeling of suspicion which prevents interaction between the
various races. As a teacher, we can integrate the integration by launching a program
called Sekolahku Penyayang (Abdullah, 1986). The program can be implemented in
schools by emphasizing the concept of "Sekolahku Syurgaku" and "Yang Tua Di
Hormati, Yang Muda Di Sayangi" to students through participation with Parents and
Teachers Association (PIBG). This practice can realize the group of students who love
the school, the students formed personals prefer and respect for others, noble virtuous
character, and cause feelings of affection and cordial relationship between the school
citizens and fellow parents.
The second factor is Loyalty to the King and Country. Before the independence,
British colonial policy of divide and rule the distant ethnic groups in the interest and
safety of their own. Colonialists deliberately determine the status and different roles for
certain people. Limited interaction between racial prejudice and negative attitudes
emerged strong among the local people of various ethnic groups. By doing this, some
people lose the trust of loyalty to our king and this country. We as a teacher need to
overcome this problem especially in school. We need to launch the Rancangan
Integrasi Murid Untuk Perpaduan (RIMUP) that have being planned by the government.
The majority of students are from the Malay students, but they come from different
regions and states including Sabah and Sarawak. RIMUP program was also held in
which the students of the school are involved with programs planned in conjunction with
other schools, has a multi-racial students (KPM, 2005). RIMUP committee in school and
community comprises a diverse group. The effects of student and school community
involvement in this program is very good. It allows them to interact and socialize in a
more close and warm, thus contributing to the unity and integration of the people closer.
The third factor is Upholding the Constitution. In Malaysia, we have a constitution in
many aspects especially in politics. The existence of a political association, social and
economic based on nationality, race and ethnicity have enhance a group identity and
arouse suspicion because each group is fighting for the rights and interests of certain
groups. Political parties based on ethnic groups also play a variety of sensitive issues
such as language, culture, economic and privilege to exacerbate the problem of unity
(Ahmad, 1988). As a teacher, we need to help student from have a suspicion among the
races. In school, all students are required to take part in the association, game and
uniforms. Active participation in co-curricular activities and their involvement in the
camps, performances and competitions at various levels will expose them to different
situations and varied. There are rules and certain discipline that they need to follow
while programs are ongoing. Selection committee members made democratically, with
guidance from teachers and coaches of various agencies. They can interact in a healthy
and comply with rules and regulations determined. Students involvement in the
activities undertaken are very satisfactory, especially in efforts to design and develop
the students' future life and a disciplined society, united in harmony and integration.
The fourth factor is Rule of Law. We live in this world have so many law. As a
Malaysian citizen, we need to follow the law that have being produce by the
government. Law is made to make things become easier and organized. In school, we
also have law that the student need to follow. As a teacher, we need to help student to
follow the law and rule by launching an interesting programs. Each year the school
conducts various programs to commemorate the anniversary of the country's
independence. Reception committee was established with the cooperation of the school
Rukun Negara Club, Unit of Guidance and Counselling, Teachers and Staff Club,
Historical Society and student associations. Schools also involve the participation of
PIBG, alumni, leaders and historians, Agencies and Government Bodies and NGOs in
the activities undertaken. The events are implemented as talk of independence,
patriotism shaped slideshow, reading poems, skits, flutter of "Jalur Gemilang",
classrooms and decorations, speeches, forums, writing essays, blood donation,
exhibition, painting portraits of national leaders, the parade and processions and
celebrations historic moments. Students are also involved in the celebration program
organized by other parties at the district, state and national levels. Participation of
various stakeholders in the success of this program will build confidence in all the
student related to the construction of an independent nation of Malaysia and
responsible nature of high patriotism and love for life and the stability of the united
country.
The last factor is Good Behavior and Morality. As a good teacher, we can inculcate
the good behavior among students by bringing them to have a school visit. The school
encourages the teachers and students to make the visit to historical places such as
Parliament, Putrajaya, Malacca City, National Monument, National Museum,
orphanages, children orphans and the poor, prison, child protection home, universities
and others. Various events were held during the visit such as a discussion, mutual
cooperation, arts and culture, exchange of information and so on. The effect of the visit
and the visit is very significant and the awareness of students of the importance of
courtesy, tolerance and good relations between people of different races and ethnicity
towards building a good behavior and morality (Hashim, 1984). The teacher also can
launch a camping program. This program involves all students and teachers as well as
part of the school support staff. It obtained cooperation from various parties including
the State Government, Fire, Police and others. The events conducted are motivational
talks, building self-esteem, spirituality, adventure, survival, citizenship and leisure. Apart
from getting information and new skills, they can experience the natural beauty of
Malaysia, favors life in a peaceful country.
3.0 Conclusion
In conclusion, unity and integration of the people in a multi-racial country is difficult
to achieve without a strategic early exposure, intimacy, understanding all sides, and
holding a strong belief in the teachings of the religion, in addition to the full realization
appreciate the essence and content of the letter and spirit of all the principles of rule of
the country.
The appreciation of Rukun Negara is important for achieving national unity and
integration in the country through education and the learning process based on national
curriculum, extra-curricular involvement in an orderly and organized, religious
appreciation in everyday life, the participation of all citizens of the internal organization
of the school and outside school or all members of the community who are Malaysian
citizens in a variety of activities that lead to the formation of a united people's lives and
relationships friendly and sincerely practiced full consciousness by all stakeholders
based on the principles of Rukun Negara Malaysia.
Now we are in the era of globalization and liberalization. Various efforts have been
made is to move towards forming a united multi-racial society. Although there are some
challenges, but with careful planning, hard work and a more effective strategy is
implemented in a responsible and pro-active nature of the parties is certainly harmony,
national unity and integration will be achieved with the blessing and pleasure of God
Almighty authorities.
