The lute was a populai instiument foi both piofessionals anu amateuis in Englanu
anu Euiope fiom the 16th to 18th centuiies. Piofessional lutenists iequiieu the
pationage of the Couit to make a living anu inueeu many of theii stuuents amongst
the nobility became quite uecent peifoimeis anu composeis in theii own iight. As
an "amateui with a uay job" myself, I want to pay homage to those whose love of
music was expiesseu both thiough theii compositions anu theii pationage of the
full time piofessionals.
The CB opens with a Plainte by the gieat baioque lute composei Sylvius Leopolu
Weiss. This is not a plainte of love, but iathei a complaint to an un-nameu pation
who faileu to pay his fee! Theie aie two veisions of this piece, one each in the
Lonuon anu Biesuen manusciipts. I have tiieu to use the best featuies of both.
A Pation who uiu suppoit Weiss was Piince Byacinth ue Lobkowitz (168u-17S4), in
fact Weiss ueuicateu one of his Biesuen lute sonatas to the Piince. Lobkowitz was
iegaiueu as a fine peifoimei anu two of his lute suites suivive. The suite in Bb
majoi peifoimeu heie is tuneful, ihythmic anu shows an auvanceu masteiy of
technique. It is founu in the vienna 1u78 manusciipt.
Nuch less is known about Count Feiuinanu uiaf von Beigen (1678-1766), although
fully five suites of his have suiviveu in thiee manusciipts. While his music is
chaiming the lute tablatuie can be awkwaiu to play as wiitten anu uoes benefit
fiom some ie-woiking. Bis suite in A minoi, also fiom the vienna 1u78 manusciipt,
contains the iaiely useu Touine, a uance in 24 time.
}ohann Anton Logy (16Su-1721) (also spelleu Losy) was a Count in Piague anu
composeu foi both baioque lute anu baioque guitai. Be is peihaps best known foi a
piece wiitten in his honoi by Sylvius Weiss following Logy's ueath (Tombeau sui la
moit ue Nonseigneui Comte ue Logi). The solo woiks peifoimeu heie aie fiom the
Sweuish Kalmai manusciipt. The foui suiviving uuet movements (in A minoi anu F
majoi) uo fit togethei well to make theii own suite. The chaconnes movement is an
amalgamation of two chaconnes, the fiist in B minoi anu the seconu in F majoi. This
paiiing was peifoimeu this way by the lutenist Toyohiko Satoh uuiing a iecital at
the Lute Society of Ameiica's Summei Seminai anu I feel that it woiks quite well.
The Biitish physician Thomas Campion (1S67-162u) was a poet anu composei anu
wiote ovei 1uu lute songs that suivive touay. 0nusual foi the peiiou, some aie
wiitten fiom the woman's point of view anu we incluue thiee such examples heie.
Finally, to close the loop of Pationage, the CB enus with a new piece that I
commissioneu fiom the mouein uay lutenist anu composei Ronn NcFailane. Ronn
is a piolific peifoimei, founuing membei of the Baltimoie Consoit anu his CB of his
own compositions, Inuigo Roau, was nominateu foi a uiammy. The Passacaglia he
wiote foi this CB is, I believe, one of his most beautiful compositions anu it's my
honoi to piesent the woilu piemiei.
