About the Authors
GEORGE R.R. MARTIN
is the New York Times bestselling author of the series
A Song of Ice and Fire, as well as the editor and one of
the founding members of the group of writers who
created the Wild Cards series. Martin has written short
stories and novel sinces the 1970s and has won many
Hugo and Nebula Awards. He has produced and
written for television shows, including The Twilight
Zone and Beauty and the Beast. Martin is also the
author of the bestselling comic book The Hedge Knight
and The Hedge Knight II: Sworn Sword. He lives in Santa
Fe, New Mexico.
DANIEL ABRAHAM
is a fantasy writer and novelist whose body of work
includes the novels A Shadow in Summer and A
Betrayal in Winter. He is co-author (with George R. R.
Martin and Gardner Dozois) of Hunters Run. He is also
a contributor to the Wild Cards: Inside Straight novel,
edited by George R.R. Martin. He lives Albuquerque.
ERIC BATTLE
is a popular comic book artist who has worked on
several series, including DC Comics JLA, Batman, Green
Lantern, Green Arrow, and Birds of Prey. He has also
illustrated childrens books and horror books. He lives
in Philadelphia.

In 1946, an alien virus is accidently unleashed that
changes the world forever. Most of those infected die
horribly, said to have drawn the Black Queen as their
fated card. Ninety percent of those who survive
mutate into Jokersdeformed, broken, hated and
feared. But a handful are lucky enough to become
Aces, gaining superpowers that allow them to achieve

Sixty years later, an Ace named Croyd Crenson, better
known as the Sleeper, is framed for the murder of a
young nurse in New York Citys Jokertown. As Crenson
