DuPont Glass Laminating Solutions Beam Calculator Tool

The information provided is offered for assistance in application of DuPont laminating interlayer products, but IT DOES NOT
CONSTITUTE A WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE. Actual performance may vary in
particular applications.

DuPont laminate analysis procedures are believed to give adequate estimates of deformation of laminated glass based upon
best engineering judgment and practices but no claims are made as to the accuracy of the results obtained. Users will need to
satisfy themselves that the results are reasonable for their purposes. The performance of the final construction should be
measured before adoption to meet a specification. Any use of the information provided is the sole responsibility of the user.
Furthermore, conclusions drawn from the information provided should be checked against building code requirements in the
jurisdiction of the construction.

Because DuPont cannot anticipate or control the many different conditions under which this information and or product may
be used, it does not guarantee the applicability or the accuracy of this information or the suitability of its products in any given
situation. Users of DuPont products should make their own tests to determine the suitability of each such product for their
particular purposes.

INFORMATION REFERS.

Information that can be obtained from this calculator include the following:
Maximum glass stress under load and comparison to design strength specified in standards such
as ASTM E1300
Laminate deflection
Effective laminate thickness
Laminate behavior as a function of time and temperature

Information that is needed for the calculations include the following:
Support conditions
1-sided support (examples: balustrades, balconies, stairs)
2-sided support (examples: floors, stairs, often bolted glass can be approximated)
Laminate construction
Support type (1-sided or 2 sided are allowed in this calculator)
Interlayer thickness
Glass type (annealed, heat strengthened, tempered)
Laminate dimensions
Load information
Type of load
o Uniform pressure (kPa or psi)
o Line Load (kN/m or lb/in)
Load duration
o Examples: short duration of 3 seconds may be appropriate for wind load. Intermediate
duration of 1 month is often used for snow loads on overhead glazing. Long duration
loads may be appropriate for self-weight or dead loads.

An example follows:

1. Enter in the name of your firm, email address, project name, and the desired units (metric
versus English). This data will only be used for issuing a report on your specific case. Press
Submit when you are finished. In this example, English units will be used.

2. Read the Disclaimer and choose to Accept or Cancel out of the tool. You may also return to the
previous screen by pressing Back.

3. Choose the appropriate combination of loading condition and support condition. As you mouse
over the images, the images will change to show the loading conditions. For this example, we
will choose Case 3.

4. Enter in all required data into the calculator fields. In this case, we have chosen an unsupported
span of 36 inches, a uniform load of 0.25psi, a symmetric laminate using heat strengthened
glass and 60 mil SentryGlas. The loading conditions will be 3 seconds at 104 F. Allowable stress,
Shear Modulus and Youngs Modulus will be filled in automatically based on your choices. When
complete, click Calculate.

5. Results will display below the entries completed. Note the effective thickness for SentryGlas
and PVB is displayed, as well as a comparison between the two interlayer materials for both
Glass Stress and Laminate Deflection. Green highlighted stress implies the laminate meets ASTM
E1300 while red highlighted stress implies the laminate does not meet ASTM E1300. The plots
displayed show the results for glass thicknesses near the chosen glass thickness. These plots can
be used to help select another glass thickness if the one chosen does not meet ASTM E1300. In
this example, the SentryGlas laminate meets the ASTM E1300 standard, while the PVB example
does not.

Common questions

Users should consider the accuracy of input data such as load type and duration, laminate construction, and support conditions. It's critical to cross-verify calculator results with building codes and conduct practical tests to ensure safety and performance. Assessing the environmental conditions like temperature, which affect laminate behavior over time, is also important. Users must take responsibility for validating results independently to ensure compliance with standards like ASTM E1300 .

DuPont explicitly states that the tool does not guarantee accuracy or applicability for any given situation, emphasizing that actual performance can vary. The tool provides estimates based on standard engineering practices but requires users to verify these results against local building code requirements and conduct their own tests to determine suitability for specific applications. DuPont offers no express warranties, and user satisfaction of results is crucial, highlighting a significant limitation in reliance on the calculator without additional verification .

The Beam Calculator Tool helps users by providing estimates of maximum glass stress, laminate deflection, and effective laminate thickness based on best engineering judgment and practices. However, it emphasizes the need for users to ensure these results are reasonable for their purposes by verifying against building code requirements. The tool's applicability is also limited by user-specific conditions, as DuPont offers no warranty on the tool's accuracy or the suitability of products in particular situations .

The tool calculates maximum glass stress and laminate deflection based on user inputs and compares them to design strengths specified in standards like ASTM E1300. The results are visually indicated with color codes; green highlights denote compliance with ASTM E1300, while red highlights indicate non-compliance, prompting users to adjust parameters such as glass thickness if necessary .

The calculator aids in selecting appropriate glass thickness by displaying plots showing results for different thicknesses near the chosen one. If a user's selection does not meet ASTM E1300 standards, these visual aids help in adjusting the thickness choice to ensure compliance and improved performance under specified load conditions .

It's essential because the calculator provides estimates based on general engineering principles that may not accurately reflect specific use cases. Real-world conditions and variations in construction practices can affect performance, requiring verification to ensure the intended safety and compliance outcomes are met per building regulations and specific application requirements .

The accuracy of user inputs is crucial as it directly affects the tool's outputs, such as calculations of stress and deflection. Incorrect or imprecise inputs can lead to flawed results, potentially causing users to draw incorrect conclusions about the laminate’s structural capability, thus emphasizing the importance of precise data entry for reliable analysis .

DuPont's disclaimer places the onus of determining product suitability entirely on the user by disavowing any implied or express warranties. This implies that legal and safety responsibilities in construction projects lie with the entities conducting the tests and verification processes. Users must critically evaluate calculator results, confirming through independent means that safety standards and legal codes are upheld, thus protecting against exceptions and ensuring accountability .

The tool incorporates temperature-related factors by adjusting load duration and laminate behavior as functions of time and temperature. Users can input specific conditions, such as the temperature at which loads are applied, to approximate the laminate's performance under those conditions and derive stress and deflection outcomes that consider environmental influences .

Inputs required include support conditions (either 1-sided or 2-sided), laminate construction details such as interlayer thickness, glass type, and laminate dimensions, as well as load information like type and duration of load. These parameters determine key outputs such as laminate deflection and maximum stress, directly impacting the calculated suitability of the glass laminate against standards like ASTM E1300 .
