Winter 2010 Meditation Practices Newsletter

The newsletter announces upcoming meditation sessions and mini-retreats at the Still Presence Spirituality Centre in both Beaconsfield and Verdun. It provides instructions for four meditation techniques to reduce stress, including stopping to take deep breaths, giving stress away through the body while imagining it dissolving, and imagining stress leaving the body as black smoke that dissolves into light. It also shares an excerpt encouraging letting go of searching and coming home to the present moment.

Winter Session 2010

The Practice of Meditation

The practice of meditation is about freedom, about breaking the chains of

old beliefs and fears that keep us in bondage to the illusion that we are separate
from each other and from All That Is.
Freedom is the destiny of every living being. We become free by waking from our
dreams of fear, scarcity, blame and guilt, by taking responsibility for acting, to the best
of our knowledge, with care and loving-kindness that we may kindle the
light of love within and by that light see our way home
and serve as beacons for others along the way.

Recommended strategies for beginners of meditation include sitting quietly and watching thoughts arise, listening to the sounds around them, practicing bare attention to bodily sensations, following the breath without manipulating it, using a mantra, and practicing kindness by focusing on someone in need of care, ultimately fostering mindfulness and presence .

In the Still Presence Spirituality Centre's workshops, breath is emphasized as a powerful tool for controlling the mind and fostering spiritual healing. It is explored through workshops like 'The Breath of Life', which delves into the psychology of the breath and its transformative potential, underscoring the connection between breathing and spiritual well-being .

The Still Presence Spirituality Centre states that shared silence with others is a profound gift. Together, individuals grow and come to see and know themselves as vehicles of the Spirit. The practice is aimed at experiencing living fully in body, mind, and spirit, emphasizing the collective aspect of spiritual growth .

The core objective of meditation as described in the newsletter is about achieving freedom by breaking free from old beliefs and fears that create a sense of separation among individuals and from the greater existence, referred to as 'All That Is'. This involves waking up from harmful dreams of fear, scarcity, blame, and guilt, and cultivating loving-kindness and responsibility .

The Still Presence Spirituality Centre proposes dealing with stress during the Christmas season through practices such as attending Advent mini-retreats, taking calming breaths, metaphorically giving stress away, and visualizing stress dissolving into God's love. These methods are intended to foster calmness and refocus energies towards spiritual peace .

The spiritual gifts outlined in 'THE GIFT of CHANGE' serve as opportunities for personal transformation and reflection during the twelve days of Christmas. Each gift, such as living in the present or shifting from negative to positive thinking, encourages individuals to reflect on growth and align with spiritual values that guide towards becoming one's true self .

The Still Presence Spirituality Centre integrates Western and Eastern spiritual traditions by promoting practices such as meditation and breath work, alongside Christian concepts like the Path to Christ. Leaders like Michael Johnson exemplify this integration, drawing on Creation-Centered Spirituality and blending diverse spiritual influences .

'Letting go of fear' is significant in spiritual awakening as it involves uncovering inner faith and courage, thereby enabling individuals to trust in the Divine Presence. It aligns with the Lenten season, symbolizing an awakening to the 'still small voice within,' and supports opening up to one's true potential and spiritual growth .

Inviting silence contributes to personal growth by allowing individuals to explore themselves more deeply as vehicles of the Spirit. This quiet practice, shared with others, facilitates complete engagement in body, mind, and spirit, enhancing the personal experience of the Divine and promoting collective and individual spiritual development .

The Conscious Living Series helps participants deepen their spiritual journey by guiding them through gentle spiritual exercises that encourage the flowering of contemplative practice in everyday life. The series is designed to refine participants' spiritual journey in the Way of Christ, using resources such as 'Son of Man: The Mystical Path to Christ' by Andrew Harvey, and explores concepts like embracing one's path and healing the wounded heart .
