Our mission is to encourage
writing by providing the most
up to date and relevant writing
opportunities for everyone in
the Chicago land area.
Linda Stevens
Linda Stevens is a
volunteer with Literature
for All of Us for ten years
and has been on the Board
of Directors for the past
two years. I chose to get
involved Literature for All
of Us because I believe
that words matter. She
began at the program by
volunteering at the book
clubs geared towards teen
moms. The program is
meant to provide a safe
environment for the
students to talk about
themselves. When
asked how writing has
affected her students she
responds Profoundly.
They are tough kids that
have gone through a lot
and are able to open up
through writing. They
focus on poetry and allow
the students to have free
license. Each student
approaches writing in a
different way but it
always brings out
something honest.

Literature For All of Us: This organization, located in the suburb of
Evanston, was formed in order to help young people open their
minds by opening books. Founded in 1996 by Karen Thomson, this
organization focuses on helping students in underprivileged areas
with their reading and writing skills. The group was founded in
order to help teen mothers through book groups and has expanded
into other arenas such as book groups GED students. Through
reading and writing, these young people are able to find their

Second City Chicago: Brought to you by the world-renowned comedy troupe
Second City comes writing workshops for teens. Second City has been making
people laugh for over fifty years and now has locations across the country and
abroad; in Chicago they are located on Wells St. There is no one more
qualified to teach how to be funny than the talented individuals at Second City.
These workshops run for 6-14 weeks depending on the program and teach
skills for writing with humor. The types of writing include storytelling, online
writing and sardonic writing that are seen in The Onion. Current or former
Second City members teach the classes so students have the most talented

Teen Writers and Artists Project. While this organization is not
tangible, it provides a very important outlet for young writers.
Funded by the Chicago based Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, this
online forum allows young people to post and share their works
and ideas. Also provided are mentors and other students for advice
or critiques on your writing or art. In addition, on the home page
lies a list of events happening in the Chicago land area. For more

Young Chicago Authors. Founded in 1991 by Dr. Robert Boone, Young
Chicago Authors has strived to transforms the lives of young people
by cultivating their voices through writing, publication, and
performance education. With this mission statement, YCA has been
empowering the youth of Chicago for 22 years. Each week, they host
free workshops in order for anyone to work on their writing. They also
host weekly open-mic sessions that create a positive and welcoming
environment for poetry and other works to be shared. In addition to the
weekly workshops, every year they host the slam poetry competition
Louder than a Bomb. In the words of Kevin Coval, the artistic director of
Young Chicago Authors, Louder than a Bomb offers a counter-
narrative from the perspectives of the young people most affected by

The TallGrass Writers Guild:
This organization offers Chicago
area writers opportunities not
only to have their works
published in various publications
but venues for public readings as
well. Members of the TallGrass
Writers Guild are given the
opportunity to take part in public
readings at such venues as
University of Chicago,

University of Illinois/Chicago,
Chicago's Harold Washington
Library Center, the Chicago
Cultural Center. In addition the
TallGrass Writers Guild is know

Chicago offers freelance
writers of the Chicago the
opportunity to find jobs that
match their specific writing
interests. In addition to
matching up freelance jobs to
its members, the Independent
Writers of Chicago offers
numerous tools and
opportunities to improve ones
writing skills. Through writing
seminars hosted six times a
year and various other social
events members are able
improve their skills and
involve themselves in the
Chicago writing community.

The InPrint mission statement is: In Print, a professional writers organization, provides
resources and education to support individuals in their craft. InPrint is a member based
writing organization offering writers the opportunity to improve their skills through a verity
of means. InPrint meetings include such things as writing workshops, guest speakers
addressing a verity of writing based topics, and networking opportunities for writers at all
levels on involvement. InPrint published a monthly newspaper that includes information on
various writing events in the Chicago area. Membership costs $30 a year and provides

geNarrations is a part
of the Goodman
Theatre of Chicago,
Illinois and is geared
towards senior citizens
ages 55 and older.
GeNarrations typically
offers at least two 6-
week sessions each
season, without
roughly 30 participants
each session. In the
workshop, participants
are encouraged to
develop personal
narratives inspired by
mainstage productions

History Council: the CAWHC
is a non-profit organization
that promotes the study and
preservation of womens
history in Chicago. One of
their primary functions is to
compile lists of archives and
personal histories from

current project is entitled
Documenting Women's
Activism and Leadership in

Chicago North Romance
Writers of America: The
Chicago North Chapter of
Romance Writers of America
is a writing organization
geared specifically toward
those interested in writing
romantic fiction. For an annual
fee of $25, members are
entitled to monthly chapter
functions, chapter newsletter,
manuscripts critiques, and
participation in the annual
Spring Fling conference.
Chapter meetings are held
twice a month. Romance
writers of America also hold

Off Campus Writers Workshop:
Founded in 1946, the OCWW meets every
Thursday morning September through
May. For $10 a session, members can
listen to lectures from speakers
specializing in various genres ranging
from romance writing to childrens
