The Thomasville Police Department honored graduates of their Citizens Police Academy class
Tuesday evening.

The academy was attended by 13 members of the community, who met every Tuesday for eight
weeks to learn about various law enforcement functions. Over the course of those eight weeks,
participants learned about all aspects of policing and the operations of the Thomasville Police
Department. Classroom presentations were augmented with community partners to bridge the
gap between the community and law enforcement and also help explain why certain procedures
are carried out.

The academy culminated with a dinner and graduation ceremony that took place at the
Thomasville Police Academy. District Court Judge Mary Covington was the guest speaker. The
alumni of the academy will assist the Thomasville Police Department in future events such as
Everybodys Day and National Night Out. The alumni will also be invited to participate on
future hiring boards for the police department.

This is the first academy during my tenure in Thomasville, said Chief Jeff Insley. The
academy was a huge success and I commend each of the 13 participants for taking time out of
their busy schedules to want to learn about our everyday functions. This says a lot about how
much they care about their community and want to be involved.

The goal of the Thomasville Police Department is to improve relationships and understanding
with the community which will help improve the quality of life in Thomasville. Another
academy is already in the planning stages for next year. If anyone is interested in attending,
