Stolen Generations

Cramer, Humke, Volovsek National History Day March 26, 2014 To determine our topic, we searched for a unique subject in which we would truly be able to expand our knowledge of the world around us. Each member of our group hoped to gain something different from our topic, from learning about worldly genocides to the rights of orphaned children. When coming upon the topic of the Stolen Generations of Australia, we became intrigued by the combination of our interests, urging us to choose the Stolen Generations of the Aboriginal People of Australia for our NHD project. The events surrounding the Stolen Generations significantly affected not only Australia, but also the rights given to people around the world. To begin our research we analyzed primary sources and testimonies of the Stolen Generations. Our initial research consisted of watching documentaries, reading current and past articles on our topic, viewing photographs, reading analyses and reviewing primary accounts of the events that took place. Secondly, we took the step of contacting the Stolen Generations Testimonies Foundation in order to conduct interviews with those directly affected by our topic. This was pertinent to our topic because the testimonies of those affected provides credibility to the gravity of the events surrounding the Stolen Generations. Our struggle in researching our topic occurred due to the vast difference in location and cultures between us and those affected. This resulted in less information from the victims of the Stolen Generations than we had hoped for. The viewpoints of our topic also presented an issue as we conducted our research due to the vast differences in opinions and accounts. To select our presentation medium, we assessed the talents we possessed and experience we have each had with each. With one team member who has built websites using the same website builder required for the NHD project for a national organization, we decided to utilize her expertise in order to best present our information. We found the website to aid us in our need for multiple people to work on our project at once as well. The website medium allowed us to reach our full potential in project creation. In the research we have conducted hitherto, we have discovered the true devastation that the events of the Stolen Generations have caused on the Aboriginal people of Australia. Due to racism and ignorance of the Australian Government, native children were forced from their families and homes to grow up in unfavorable conditions within stations, camps, or homes. The responsibility of the government to provide for their people was seemingly nullified during this time as they thoughtlessly stole inalienable rights from the Aboriginal children and families. Regardless of the Apology from the Australian Government, the Aboriginal people continue to fight for their rights and the compensation and assistance they deserve. The research we have conducted has shed a new light on the necessity for a steady government and unity of nations to battle for the incontrovertible rights of all people.
