Overview of Android Operating System

Android is an open source operating system based on a modified version of the Linux kernel. It was developed by Android Inc. which was bought by Google in 2005. While Android uses the Linux kernel, it has its own middleware and apps. There has been some tension between Google and the Linux community due to Google's reluctance to contribute Android code back to the main Linux kernel project. However, Google has hired developers to work directly with the Linux community and more Android drivers are being included in the main Linux kernel releases.
