Children’s Rights in Armed Conflicts

Children face numerous human rights violations during armed conflicts. They are recruited as child soldiers, abducted from schools and homes, and forced to commit violent acts. International law prohibits the recruitment of anyone under 18 but many groups still exploit children. Armed conflict disrupts family support systems and communities that children rely on. It increases risks of death, injury, malnutrition and disease. Children experience psychological trauma and are vulnerable to gender-based violence like rape. International organizations need to provide increased protection and support to child refugees and victims of armed conflicts.
