The indefinite articles A/AN and the definite article THE
The indefinite article * The indefinite article A/AN is used before singular countables nouns. We use A before nouns beginning with a consonant sound and AN before nouns beginning with a vowel sound. a dog an umbrella
* We use A/AN to say what somebody/something is or what someone's job is . My brother is a doctor. A dictionary is a book.
* We don't use A/AN with uncountable nouns. We use some instead. some sugar some milk
* We don't use A/AN before an adjective when there's no noun after it. But when there's a noun after it, we use A/AN according to the first sound of the adjective. I've got a flat in the center of the city. It's big. It's also comfortable. The definite article * The definite article THE is used when it is clear which thing or person we are talking about, for example when the noun is mentioned for a second time or is already known. I can see a cat. The cat is white. * We use THE with nouns which are unique and before the names of musical instruments. the earth the piano the sun the guitar the sky the violin
* We also use THE before the names of rivers, seas/oceans, mountain ranges, deserts, group of islands/states, families and nationalities. the river Thames the Pacific the Sahara the USA the Smiths the Chinese
* We don't use THE with plural nouns when we talk about them in general. Scorpions are very dangerous. Elephants live in Africa.

We don't use THE before proper nouns or names of meals or games/sports.
