Loss of a Nation: The Trail of Tears


When asked to pick a topic to study for over a month and make a website on, it was obvious that we had to pick a topic that we were interested in. After looking through the list of recommended topics that Mr. Chellmen provided to us, we limited it down to three choices; one being the American Indian Removal Act. After discussing, it was agreed that we were both greatly interested in the AIM, and wanted to learn more as we did not know much about it, and had heard terrible stories on the discrimination of Indians. After some research, we knew that this was the best topic for us; we wanted to learn more about the mistreatment of Indians. After picking our topic we began to research. We were not really sure where to start, so we typed the most general search possible, American Indian Movement, into google. What

came up was fascinating; so much content advocating for the Indians side, and so many stories. We then picked out a book, The Trail of Tears, The Story of the Cherokee Removal, by Dan Elish. This book gave us a great background and detailed story of the Trail of Tears; our future topic. After more research, we realized that doing our project on the entire American Indian Removal might be difficult, so we focused in on the Trail of Tears. We both found ten sources to start with, then expanded off of that. Many primary sources were used in our research, and the book was used in depth. We decided to use the website format because we are both interested in technology, and knowing that we live far away from each other it seemed like the most reliable way to complete the project. After the presentation category was selected, we split up the work load in categories. Jamaal took the Jacksonian Era page and the Event pages, while Ben took the Indian Removal Act page and the Consequences page. By incorporating quotes for evidence, we fine-tuned our pages to revolve around our thesis. Finally, after we finished our website, we both looked over each others work and then edited. The NHD theme this year asks us to choose an event in history, and explain how the Rights and Responsibilities of a gender, race, nation or anything has been denied to the corresponding topic. Our project, Loss of a Nation: The Trail of Tears, relates to the theme because President Jackson and the U.S. Government unrightfully stole Indian land and in the process killed over 4,000 Indians. The Trail of Tears is a controversial event in which an entire race of Indians were discriminated against, stripped of their rights, and treated like animals. The United States Government and Jackson are responsible for the deaths of the Cherokee, and stole land which rightfully belonged to the Indians. It is inevitable that rights and responsibilities would come up when speaking of the Trail of Tears.
