Sena Takashima, Megan Mansonhing, Sarah Zhong Millers Period 3, 3, 2 December 19, 2013 Process Paper (490) Racial discrimination and unfair treatment has been going on for many years in the history of mankind. It is human nature to judge other people, to find faults in others. When we were introduced to this years theme, Rights and Responsibilities, we knew immediately that we wanted to choose a topic on racial discrimination. We have been acquainted to similar subjects since elementary school when we learned about slavery and the Civil War. However, none of us has ever understood the true meaning of it. As we researched about this era in history, we realized that the topic was more complicated than we expected. There was lots information for us to include, so we decided to narrow down our topic. When we showed our progress to our teachers, they agreed that the topic should focus on a specific event. From there, we chose a few main points from the Civil Rights Movement that we thought might work well with the theme. Out of the few, our group agreed on the Montgomery Bus Boycott because we learned through research that it was one of the major events that started the Civil Rights Movement. We first visited the local libraries to check out books on the Civil Rights Movement and the history of African Americans. We also searched the internet with the key words African American Civil Rights Movement. The most useful was a website of Rosa Parks Museum that explained the
boycott. Also, we interview a specialist from the Civil Rights Museum in Tennessee, who let as

Takashima, Mansonhing, Zhong 2 understand more deeply about the impacts of the boycott. In addition, one group member went to a museum in Los Angeles that exposed the dynamics of prejudice and discrimination in history. There, she

was able to garner further information about the Civil Rights Movement, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott. We chose to make a website for this project since this topic is occurred fairly recently and there are many videos and live speeches present by the participants of this time in history. The website would be the best way to use these quotes as we explore more about the boycott and the events following. To include papers such as the annotated bibliography, we used Scrib, a website that allows us to upload documents made on Microsoft Word to the website. This type of project would also be easiest for all our group members to participate when we are too busy to meet because it is on the internet. The topic, the Montgomery Bus Boycott fits well with the theme, Rights and Responsibilities, because it is about African Americans fighting for their freedom and rights to be treated as equals, but it is also their responsibility to make sure their voices are heard. The government also holds responsibilities to treat all citizens with the same respect and accepting people of all cultures. It is a well-balanced topic with both aspects of the theme.
