The Abolition that Altered the Structure of Hawaii

Kyle Daquioag Individual Website Junior Division Why would a king, taught to be loyal to the kapu system, help abolish an entire belief system? The kapu system, which I learned about in the 7th Grade, intrigued me. When I was given the opportunity to participate in National History Day, I began researching the entire kapu system. I later focused on the various changes and influences, that the missionaries and other foreign settlers had, on the structure of Hawaiian government, society, religion and many rights and responsibilities.

I decided that my topic would be the abolition of the kapu system because I already learned some facts about the kapu system in the 7th Grade. I thought it would be easier and I would feel more comfortable working with topic, that I learned about last year. I used the NHD 2013 winners and finalists websites as a guide to help me with my website. I started all my research during my summer break. First, I visited websites to understand the purpose of the kapu system and how it affected every aspect of Hawaiian life. With more research, I found more information about King Kamehameha II (Liholiho), Kaahumanu, and other participants in the abolition of the kapu s ystem. With even more research, I discovered more information about the effects abolition of the kapu system, and the various changes and influences, that the missionaries and other foreign settlers had, on the structure of Hawaiian government, society, religion and many rights and responsibilities. I had a really hard time finding primary sources. Taking into consideration that the abolition of the kapu system took place in the 1800s, it would be pretty hard finding sources from that time. In the beginning of October, I attended a NHD Kickoff Event at Chaminade University. At the kickoff event, I had a attended 3 different sessions. One about the theme/thesis/topic. I was able to understand the theme even more. I learned how to make my topic fit with the theme. I was a able to make a thesis for my topic. Another session was about making a correct website. I learned about the dos and donts when creating a website. I learned about the common mistakes made when making a website. I also learned how to efficiently use the elements the website offers. And another session was about historical research. I learned so much a the kickoff event. I chose a website because I feel that it can effectively convey my argument. I also wanted to build my skills in web design. The skills I learn can be used in college and when presenting information professionally. Before I created my website, I created an outline, then an essay and found images relating to my topic. After I had all the components, I created the actual website.
