The French Revolution: A Triumph Over Political Absolutism

Ever since my first encounter with French culture as a freshman, I have been intrigued by its uniqueness. I immersed myself in various aspects by enrolling in additional classes; still, I yearned for additional knowledge about this nations rich history. When I was given the opportunity to explore an aspect of world history for this project, I knew I wanted to select some portion of French history to focus on. I concluded that I would explore the French Revolution, perhaps the most influential event in this nations history. With little prior knowledge, I began my arduous search for information at the Farragut High School Library. There I was able to locate Susan Banfields The Rights of Man, The Reign of Terror; The Story of the French Revolution. After I began reading, I acquired a brief knowledge of the revolution. In order to further my research, I consulted with my local University, The University of Tennessee Knoxville, to expand my brief knowledge of the Revolution. I accessed online informational databases regarding the Revolution; however, I still sought additional information concerning the many forms of government throughout the various stages of the Revolution. I also accessed a wide variety of literary works from the University Library. These books gave me a better understanding of several aspects of the Revolution, but I still wanted to understand if there were other factors that influenced it. After scouring the internet, I was able to acquire various works from enlightenment thinkers such as The Social Contract by Jean-Jaques Rousseau and The Two Treatises of Government by John Locke. These works gave me a better understanding of how the enlightenment dramatically influenced the revolution. I had difficulty with the task of choosing a layout that captured the dreary setting but did not bore the audience with dull matte black and heavy fonts. I found an elegant wood theme that

embodies the age and serious nature of the topic. The Weebly format allowed me to provide the audience with a wide variety of media, pictures, information, and effects. In order to keep the attention of the audience, I tried to include a balance of text and media. The result was an interactive yet highly informative story about the citizens of France taking control of their government and embracing their political, civil, and human rights. The French Revolution is a series of events beginning in 1789 that completely reorganized its political system. Through its course, the French people incorporated the enlightenment ideals of self-government, and political equality into their political system. They formed a new representative Republic, that granted the people the power to govern and fulfilled the governments responsibility to guarantee these rights. Shortly after, those rights were stripped from the people when the radical revolutionaries took over the government and forcibly enacted their will. The events of the revolution served as a precedent for other nations to embrace their rights of self-government.
