With Spring registration just days away, I thought I'd highlight some of the new Honors seminars we'll be offering for the first time. A full list can be found at [Link] HON 2030, section 2 -- "Music and Politics" (Prof. Eric Lapin). By placing musical compositions, composers, and genres into historical and political context, this course aims to give students a deeper understanding of how music is influenced by -- and sometimes influences -- politics (satisfies nonliterature arts and humanities requirement). HON 2070, section 1 -- "The Nature of Infinity" (Prof. Neil Calkin). The 2013 winner of the Honors College's "Create-a-Course" contest, this seminar examines the infinite and the infinitesimal from mathematical and philosophical perspectives (satisfies the critical thinking competency). HON 2210, section 1 -- "Literature and the Great War, 1914-1918" (Prof. Johannes Schmidt). In the first of a series of courses marking the centennial of World War I, Prof. Schmidt will lead students in examining how writers coped with the destruction and enormity of the conflict and its aftermath (satisfies the literature requirement). We'll also be offering new courses on "coming of age" films; twentieth century literature and painting; economic debates on the nature of freedom; and much more. Clemson Humanities Roads Scholars Nihad Farooq joins us from Georgia Tech to present her research on slavery and social network for the final lecture in the first year of the Clemson Humanities Road Scholars lecture series. Kim Manganelli will offer a brief response, and then we will have some time for Q&A. As always, the lecture will be on Friday, Nov 15th at 3:30 PM, in room 118 of the Academic Success Center.

Beginning January 7, 2014, students may contact Registration Services to have the limit raised to 21. ( This limit will not automatically increase to 21 as it did in the past.) Undergraduate students who wish to register for more than 21 credits must have approval of the advisor. Advisors should e-mail Regserv@[Link] to have the limit increased beginning January 13, 2014.

SASH Peer Advisors Needed! Do you love honors and want to share your experience with others? Apply to become a advisor in the Seniors Advising Sophomores in Honors (SASH) program. Rising Seniors in the Honors College are invited to apply for one of these positions where you will work with sophomore honors students to help broaden their experience at Clemson and beyond. Some topics covered are resumes, internships, and honors requirements. The application is attached and on page 5, and the deadline is Friday, January 17, 2014. Ever Considered Becoming an Honors Ambassador? The Honors College is accepting applications for current honors students to serve as ambassadors to help with recruiting activities. Calhoun Honors College Ambassadors Calhoun Honors College Ambassadors are a group of Honors student volunteers who are passionate about Honors at Clemson University and the opportunities available to Honors students. Honors Ambassadors meet with prospective students and their families to provide a student perspective on the various Honors experiences. Honors Ambassadors are official ambassadors for the Honors College working in conjunction with the Calhoun Honors College staff. Honors Ambassadors develop communication, teamwork, and leadership skills as they interact with prospective students and their families. Job Description ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Honors Ambassadors enhance the recruitment of Honors students by personally connecting with prospective students and their families through recruiting visits, emails, and phone conversations. Honors Ambassadors are expected to participate in at least ten recruiting visits each semester. Ambassadors will receive training by observing other ambassadors during their first two recruiting visits and through training sessions with Honors staff. Visits with prospective students are generally scheduled at 8:45, 10:00 am or 2:00 pm on Monday and Fridays. Other visits are scheduled upon special request at other times and occasionally Tuesday through Thursday. Honors Ambassadors are also requested to help with other recruiting activities for Honors and Clemson University including phon-a-thons, receptions and recruiting blitzes. TIME COMMITMENT: The Honors Ambassador position is for the duration of your tenure in Honors (during the fall and spring semesters) unless you resign or do not meet the expectations set forth by the Calhoun Honors College. You will be assigned recruiting visits via email based upon your class schedule. Honors Ambassadors will be required to attend all recruiting visits requested by the Honors College office staff unless the Ambassador is excused for a valid reason. BENEFITS: The opportunity to meet potential Honors Students and co-facilitate visits, which improve public speaking, teamwork, and leadership skills; and the opportunity to work with the Honors College staff in developing and/or improving public relations skills. QUALIFICATIONS Students who are in good academic standing in the Honors College can complete an application in order to be considered for an Honors Ambassador position. Well-qualified applicants will be interviewed by a committee. Deadline January 17, 2014 Senior Advisor Responsibilities Senior advisors are honors seniors who have remained in good standing in honors throughout their undergraduate tenure, with at least a 3.50 overall GPR, knowledgeable about honors and the university, and are willing to share their insights and experiences with students. Selection of peer advisors is based on leadership ability and commitment to helping others. Senior advisors assist students by providing information, discussing opportunities such as internships, and helping develop goals and action plans. SASH advisors must be enrolled on campus for the fall 2014 and spring 2015 semesters. Answer all questions and confine full application to no more than three pages.
