Dusty Klatt and Teddy Maier tame Gopher Dunes
Toyota Yamaha Blackfoot Fox Racing’s
Dusty Klatt earned his first MX1 overall
victory of the season without the benefit of
a moto win at Round 5 of the Monster
Energy Motocross Nationals in Courtland,
Ontario on Sunday, July 19. The BC native
rode hard and consistently to take the first
moto checkered flag with a third place
followed by a second place in moto two. It
was Klatt’s second career victory on the
tough-as-nails Gopher Dunes track.
Leading Edge Kawasaki Vanquish MX’s
Teddy Maier recorded his first overall win
of the season with a bit more flair – the
American cleared the task with an
impressive double moto win. It was
Maier’s first victory at Gopher.
The first MX1 moto holeshot was snared
by Freedom Cycle Kawasaki’s Mitch
Cooke followed by Chuck Mesley -- who
ended up finishing the day outside of the
top 20 overall -- Royal Distributing Thor
KTM’s Jeff Northrop, and Rockstar Suzuki’s Kyle Keast. It didn’t take long for the top
three positions to change, with Keast taking over the lead while Cooke disappeared out of
the top 10.
Klatt and his teammate Colton Facciotti, both of whom started outside the top five,
quickly chased down the lead group. In no time they took over third and second place
respectively, with Facciotti then reeling in Keast.
Until about the halfway mark Facciotti hounded Keast, who finally succumbed to the
defending champion’s relentless pressure. Keast then slid out on a berm while running in
second to remount in fourth place, where he would finish ahead of Northrop. Monster
Energy Cernic’s Kawasaki’s Paul Carpenter went down hard early in the moto,
remounting towards the back of the pack, to then claw his way to an 11th place finish.
Meanwhile, all eyes were on Royal Distributing Thor KTM mounted Kornel Nemeth,
who rejoined the MX1 points chase after missing Rounds 2, 3 and 4 due to commitments
in the United States. Nemeth crashed in the first turn and remounted dead last.
Undaunted, he sliced and diced his way into a second place finish displacing Klatt from
that position with only a few laps to go.
Cooke duplicated his first moto holeshot, after the gate dropped for moto two but again
layed no role in the battle for a top five finish. He recorded eighth when the checkered
was waved to card 10th overall on the day. Northrop found himself in the top three off the
start but it didn’t take long for Carpenter to stick a pass on him and Cooke.
Once in control Carpenter ran his own race to the finish line and chalk up fourth overall
on the day. He was followed by Klatt, who got another good start managing to keep
Nemeth, who started top 10, behind him all the way to the checkered.
Facciotti, meanwhile, crashed on the first lap and found himself looking at a catch-up
race, after remounting somewhere outside of midpack. He gradually clawed his way into
the top 10 settling for sixth at the finish line and third overall on the day.
Keast’s second moto turned out to be a disaster, after he was clipped by another rider in
the first turn. Despite damage to his bike Keast managed to keep going, but within a few
laps his motor seized and he was pitched over the handlebars, effectively ending his day.
His teammate Tyler Medaglia faired much better in the second moto, after finishing
eighth in the first moto. He got a fourth place start and cemented the top five behind the
South African Liam O’Farrel (KTM), who carded fifth overall thanks to a seventh place
finish in the first moto.
In the first MX2 moto, Maier followed Toyota Yamaha Blackfoot Fox Racing’s Kyle
Beaton into the first turn along with Royal Distributing KTM’s Kyle McGlynn. A few
laps later Maier inherited the lead from Beaton who went down. Once Maier was in
control of the moto it was pretty well a done deal, with the chase group battling for the
remaining top five positions.
In the mix were McGlynn’s teammate and defending champion, Eric Nye, RTR
Performance Orange Motorsports KTM’s Kerim Fitz-Gerald, and Performx Yamaha’s
Cole Siebler, who bulldozed his way through the ultra rough Gopher sand from a seventh
place start to finish second in front of Nye and Jeremy Medaglia.
Medalgia, who started around 10th to finish fifth behind the South African Fitz-Gerald,
raised eyebrows in Courtland, where he did not appear in the Rockstar Suzuki OTSFF
paddock. In a controversial move, he had quit the team during the mid-season break and
traded his MX1 ride for a Furious Ogio Dragon Suzuki ride in MX2.
Spencer Knowles (Yamaha) grabbed the second moto holeshot, with Maier, McGlynn,
Kaven Benoit (Kawasaki) and Beaton on his tail. By the end of the first lap Maier
displaced Knowles, who would finish well outside the top twenty. Maier was never really
challenged for the lead and easily claimed his second win of the day.
Again, the battle was for the remaining top five positions which revolved around Nye
who finished second carding second overall; Medaglia who finished third carding fourth
overall; McGlynn snared fourth cementing the top five overall while Siebler grabbed
third overall thanks to a fifth place finish.
In the Royal Distributing Women’s Nationals Presented by Suzuki, Monster Cernics
Kawasaki’s Heidi Cooke continues to be the star of the show, recording her third
consecutive clean sweep of the season. Denaye Giroux (Yamaha) carded second overall
on the strength of 4-3 motos while Kate McKerroll (KTM) sealed the podium with 6-2
moto results.
