Re: Australian –African collaboration

Dear Councillors and Members of the Senior Leadership Team of the City of Ballarat.
I wish to formally express my congratulations to the leaders and community members of the
City for their forward thinking in initiating this important partnership between Australia and
Africa.

As I write this letter, Heads of State from across Africa are meeting in Libya to set the
strategic directions for the future of Africa. The priority item on their list is the establishment
of connections with the international community. Aware of the formal connections we have
established through the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the University of
Ballarat and VIP Careers, the group has formally appointed me to coordinate some Australian
initiatives through my centre in Malawi. My vision is to establish Ballarat as a centre of
excellence for Australian –African collaboration. The key activities linked to this vision are:

• Training activities in the areas of health, education, business and government


• Short term staff exchanges or internships programs for Ballarat and Africa
• Provision of educational pathways for African students to learn in Ballarat before
returning home to add value to their country

The significance and sincerity of your efforts during my visit to Ballarat has also been
formally recognised by the Minsters of Education of the 32 countries linked to my centre.
The presentation I delivered in Ballarat has been circulated around Africa and shared with key
personnel in UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. In all these places Ballarat shines brightly as a
true friend of Africa.

I look forward to sharing a long and bright future together as we promote education and equal
opportunities for all across Africa. Our next key event will take place in Malawi in
September where once again Ballarat will stand alone as the only Australian location
represented at a key meeting that will shape future on our country. During my visit I learned
that your city is considered the birthplace of the Australia spirit. My dream is that through
this collaboration and the Classroom Connections initiative that Malawi will soon be known
as the birthplace of the new African spirit.
