Meaning of Issachar in the Bible

Ursa Major represents the fold and flock, with its brightest star Dubhe meaning "cattle". It refers to God gathering his scattered people as a shepherd gathers his flock. Cancer represents God's redeemed possessions held fast by the crab. Its brightest stars mean "the sheltering place" and "the assembled thousands". Ursa Minor depicts the lesser sheepfold, with its brightest star meaning "the turned or ridden on". These constellations in the third book of the zodiac tell of God redeeming and gathering his people to himself.

Issachar

Birth Order 9

Meaning of Name Strong’s 3485, Yissâskâr, yis-saw-kar’ (strictly yis-saws-kar’); from

5375 and 7939; he will bring a reward; Jisasskar, a son of
Jacob:—Issachar.

Mother Leah (weary)

Birth Genesis 30:14–18: 14 And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest,
and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother
Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, “Give me, I pray thee, of thy son’s
mandrakes.” 15 And she said unto her, “Is it a small matter that
thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s
mandrakes also?” And Rachel said, “Therefore he shall lie with thee
to night for thy son’s mandrakes.” 16 And Jacob came out of the
field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said,
“Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have hired thee with my
son’s mandrakes.” And he lay with her that night. 17 And God
hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bare Jacob the fifth
son. 18 And Leah said, “God hath given me my hire, because I have
given my maiden to my husband:” and she called his name Issachar.*

*The Hebrew words translated “hire” and “Issachar” form the figure
Paronomasia, rhyming words, or words similar in sound but not necessarily in
sense.

Hebrew Letter The Hebrew letter associated with the tribe of Issachar is teth ())
(from Paleo (tayth). It is the English T. It signifies shelter, refuge, or security.
Hebrew page on Numerically, it is the number 9, which is finality or divine
the Internet) completeness from the LORD , fruit of the spirit.

Gemstone Amethyst. E. Raymond Capt says this was probably the modern
amethyst, a variety of quartz with a violet color. See Exodus 28:19
and 39:12.

Encampment On the east, to the north of Judah.

Position

Standard A laden ass

Zodiac Sign Cancer

1
Issachar
Position in Eleventh sign in the circuit; third of the four signs in the third book,
Zodiac Story The Redeemer. Cancer (the Crab) shows possessions held fast.
Constellations are Ursa Minor (the Lesser Bear—the lesser
sheepfold); Ursa Major (the Great Bear—the fold and the flock); and
Argo (the Ship—the redeemed pilgrims safe at home).

Jacob’s Blessing Genesis 49:14–15: 14 Issachar is a strong ass couching down between
for the Last Days two burdens: 15 And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it
was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a
servant unto tribute.

Issachar’s Blessing

Genesis 49:14–15: 14 Issachar is a strong ass couching

down between two burdens: 15 And he saw that rest was
good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his
shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.

From E. Raymond Capt’s Missing Links Discovered in the

Assyrian Tablets: The blessing given to Issachar likens him to a LADEN ASS which became
the emblem of the tribe descended from him. Apparently, the emblem is not found in the
heraldry of modern nations.

Issachar’s Zodiac Sign
Cancer (The Crab)
Third sign in the third book, The Redeemer.
Messiah’s redeemed possessions held fast.

Cancer (The Crab)

(Messiah’s redeemed possessions held
fast)

Hebrew Name

The original picture of the sign of Cancer has

not survived. The Arabic name for Cancer is Al
Sartan, which means who holds or binds, and
may be from a Hebrew word that means to
bind together (see Genesis 49:11). There is no
ancient Hebrew word known for the crab. In
the ancient Denderah zodiac, it is represented
as a sacred beetle. The Denderah name is
Klaria, or the cattle-folds, and in this name we
have the key to the meaning of the sign, and to
the subject of this chapter.

Cancer—83 Stars
(one of the third magnitude, seven of the fourth magnitude)
æ the brightest star, located in the tail, Tegmine, holding

á (or á1 located in the lower large claw, Hebrew and Arabic Acubene, the sheltering or hiding-place
and á2)

Arabic Ma’alaph, assembled thousands

Arabic Al Himarein, the kids or lambs

4
Place in the Heavenly Story

In Cancer, we see the completion of Messiah’s work with reference to His redeemed, and in
the next and final sign (Leo), we see the completion of His work with reference to His
enemies.

The three constellations develop the truth. What is now called Ursa Minor is the lesser
flock; Ursa Major gives us the sheepfold and the sheep; Argo, the Ship, shows the travelers
and pilgrims brought safely home, with all conflict over. To accomplish this, we see the
true Issachar bowing his shoulder to bear. Christ became a servant and humbled Himself to
death.

In the center of the sign there is a remarkably bright cluster of stars, so bright that they
can be sometimes seen with the naked eye. It looks like a comet, and is made up of a great
multitude of stars. Modern astronomers have called it the Beehive. But its ancient name has
come down to us as Praesepe, which means a multitude, offspring. North and south of the
nebula Praesepe are two stars, which Orientalists speak of by a name evidently of some
antiquity. Asellus means an Ass; and one was called Asellus Boreas, the northern Ass; while
the other, Asellus Australis, is the southern Ass. This sign was afterwards known by the
symbol , which stands for these two asses. The Ass was the emblem of Typhon, the
king who smites or is smitten. This connects it with the tribe of Issachar, who is said to
have borne upon the tribal standard the sign of two asses.

Ursa Minor (The Little Bear)

(The Lesser Sheepfold)

As is the case with Cancer, the original

picture of this constellation has not
survived. There is no bear in any of the
ancient zodiacs, and the bear in this
picture has an unrealistic tail. The star
names give a better idea of what the
constellation represented. The
primitive truth that there were two, or
a pair of constellations is preserved;
and that of these two, one is larger,
and the other smaller. We have the
clue to the answer in the name of the
brightest star of the larger
constellation, which is called Dubheh, a
herd of animals. In Arabic, Dubah

5
means cattle.

Interestingly, the Hebrew word for fold, Dôhver, is very similar to the Hebrew word for
bear, Dôhv, which may explain the corruption.

Ursa Minor—24 Stars

(one of the second magnitude, two of the third magnitude, four of the fourth
magnitude)
á the brightest star, located at the point of the tail, Arabic Al Ruccaba, the turned or ridden on.
This star is the Polar Star and is the most important star in the heavens. It does not revolve in
a circle as other stars do but is fixed in its position. But the central point in the heaven moves
slowly but steadily. When the constellations were formed, the star á in Draco marked the
central point in the heavens.

â Kochab, waiting Him Who cometh

Arabic Al Pherkadain, the calves, or the young, the redeemed assembly

Arabic Al Gedi, the kid

Arabic Al Kaid, the assembled

Arcas, or Arctos (from where we derive the term Arctic regions), a traveling company or the
stronghold of the saved

6
Ursa Major (The
Great Bear)
(The Fold and the
Flock)

Ursa Major is a large

and important
constellation. It always
presents a splendid
appearance, and is
perhaps, therefore, the
best known of all the
constellations. In Job
38:32, it is mentioned
under the name of Ash.
“Canst thou guide Ash
[Arcturus] and her offspring?” The star names testify as to Ursa Major’s true meaning—the
innumerable seed gathered by Him who scattered.

Jeremiah [Link] 10 Hear the word of the LORD , O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar
off, and say, “He That scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth
his flock.

Ezekiel 34:12–16: 12 As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his
sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out My sheep, and will deliver them out of all places
where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. 13 And I will bring them out
from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own
land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited
places of the country. 14 I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains
of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall
they feed upon the mountains of Israel. 15 I will feed My flock, and I will cause them to lie
down, saith the Lord GOD. 16 I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which
was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which
was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.

7
Ursa Major—87 Stars
(one of the first magnitude, four of the second magnitude, ten of the fourth
magnitude)
á the brightest star, located in the back, Dubhe, a herd of animals, or a flock

â Hebrew Merach, the flock; Arabic purchased

ã located on the left of â, Phaeda, or Phacda, visited, guarded, or numbered, as a flock, for His
sheep, like the stars, are both numbered and named (Psalm [Link] 4 He telleth the number of
the stars; He calleth them all by their names.).

å Alioth, a she goat

æ located in the middle of the tail, Mizar, separate or small

Al Cor, the Lamb (known as “g”)

ç Arabic Benet Naish, the daughters of the assembly; also Al Kaid, the assembled

é located in the right foot, Talitha

Arabic El Alcola, the sheepfold (as in Psalm 95:7 and Psalm 100:3)

Cab’d al Asad, multitude, many assembled

Annaish, the assembled

Megrez, separated, as the flock in the fold

El Kaphrah, protected, covered (Hebrew redeemed and ransomed)

Arabic Dubheh Lachar, the latter herd or flock

Helike (so called by Homer in the Iliad), company of travelers

Greek Amaza, coming and going

Calisto, the sheepfold set or appointed

8
Argo (The Ship)
(The Pilgrims Safe at Home)

Argo is an immense constellation, the celebrated

ship of the Argonauts, of which Homer sung nearly
ten centuries before Christ. The true picture the
constellation shows is sailors in a ship, who after
all their dangers, toils, and battles, return
victorious to their own shores.

Isaiah [Link] 10 And the ransomed of the LORD

shall return, and come to Zion with songs, and
everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain
joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee
away.

Isaiah 51:9–11: 9 Awake, awake, put on strength,

O arm of the LORD ; awake, as in the ancient days,
in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath
cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon? 10 Art thou
not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the
great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea
a way for the ransomed to pass over? 11 Therefore
the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come
with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be
upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee
away.

Jeremiah 30:10–11: 10 Therefore fear thou not, O My servant Jacob, saith the LORD ; neither
be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of
their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shall
make him afraid. 11 For I am with thee, saith the LORD , to save thee: though I make a full
end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I
will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.

Jeremiah 31:11–12: 11 For the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and ransomed him from the
hand of him that was stronger than he. 12 Therefore they shall come and sing in the height
of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the LORD , for wheat, and for wine, and
for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered
garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.

Isaiah 60:1–22: 1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon

9
thee. 2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but
the LORD shall arise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen upon thee. 3 And the Gentiles
shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. 4 Lift up thine eyes round
about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy sons shall
come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side. 5 Then thou shalt see, and
flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the
sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee. 6 The
multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all they from
Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall shew forth the praises of
the LORD . 7 All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of
Nebaioth shall minister unto thee: they shall come up with acceptance on Mine altar, and I
will glorify the house of My glory. 8 Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to
their windows? 9 Surely the isles shall wait for Me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring
thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God,
and to the Holy One of Israel, because He hath glorified thee. 10 And the sons of strangers
shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in My wrath I smote
thee, but in My favour have I had mercy on thee. 11 Therefore thy gates shall be open
continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces
of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought. 12 For the nation and kingdom that
will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted. 13 The glory of
Lebanon shall come unto thee, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together, to beautify
the place of My sanctuary; and I will make the place of My feet glorious. 14 The sons also of
them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee
shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The city of the
LORD , The Zion of the Holy One of Israel. 15 Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so
that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many
generations. 16 Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of
kings: and thou shalt know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty
One of Jacob. 17 For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood
brass, and for stones iron: I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors
righteousness. 18 Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction
within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise. 19 The sun
shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee:
but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. 20 Thy sun shall
no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine
everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended. 21 Thy people also shall be
all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of My planting, the work of My
hands, that I may be glorified. 22 A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a
strong nation: I the LORD will hasten it in his time.

every male by their polls; 3 From
twenty years old and upward, all that
are able to go forth to war in Israel:
thou and Aaron shall number them by
their armies. 4 And with you there shall be a
man of every tribe; every one head of the house of his

commandment of the LORD sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were

Issachar in the Battle Against Sisera (The Song of Deborah and Barak)

Judges 5:12–23: 12 Awake, awake, Deborah: Awake, awake, utter a song: Arise, Barak, and
lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam. 13 Then He made him that remaineth have
dominion over the nobles among the people: The LORD made me have dominion over the
mighty. 14 Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin,
among thy people; Out of Machir came down governors, And out of Zebulun they that
handle the pen of the writer. 15 And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; even
Issachar, and also Barak: He was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of Reuben
There were great thoughts of heart. 16 Why abodest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear
the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of Reuben There were great searchings of
heart. 17 Gilead abode beyond Jordan: and why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued
on the sea shore, And abode in his breaches. 18 Zebulun and Naphtali were a people that
jeoparded their lives unto the death in the high places of the field. 19 The kings came and
fought, Then fought the kings of Canaan In Taanach by the waters of Megiddo; They took no
gain of money. 20 They fought from heaven; The stars in their courses fought against
Sisera. 21 The river of Kishon swept them away, That ancient river, the river Kishon. O my
soul, thou hast trodden down strength. 22 Then were the horsehoofs broken By the means
of the pransings, the pransings of their mighty ones. 23 ‘Curse ye Meroz,’ said the Angel of
the LORD , ‘Curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; Because they came not to the help of
the LORD , to the help of the LORD against the mighty.

Making David King

I Chronicles 12:1–[Link] 1 Now these are they that came to David to Ziklag, while he yet
kept himself close because of Saul the son of Kish: and they were among the mighty men,
helpers of the war. 2 They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and
the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow, even of Saul’s brethren of
Benjamin. 3 The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; and
Jeziel, and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; and Berachah, and Jehu the Antothite, 4 And
Ismaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty, and over the thirty; and Jeremiah,
and Jahaziel, and Johanan, and Josabad the Gederathite, 5 Eluzai, and Jerimoth, and
Bealiah, and Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite, 6 Elkanah, and Jesiah, and Azareel,
and Joezer, and Jashobeam, the Korhites, 7 And Joelah, and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham

14
of Gedor. 8 And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the
wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and
buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the
mountains; 9 Ezer the first, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third, 10 Mishmannah the fourth,
Jeremiah the fifth, 11 Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh, 12 Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the
ninth, 13 Jeremiah the tenth, Machbanai the eleventh. 14 These were of the sons of Gad,
captains of the host: one of the least was over an hundred, and the greatest over a
thousand. 15 These are they that went over Jordan in the first month, when it had
overflown all his banks; and they put to flight all them of the valleys, both toward the east,
and toward the west. 16 And there came of the children of Benjamin and Judah to the hold
unto David. 17 And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, “If ye
be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye be
come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of
our fathers look thereon, and rebuke it.” 18 Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, who was
chief of the captains, and he said, “Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse:
peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee.” Then
David received them, and made them captains of the band. 19 And there fell some of
Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they
helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon advisement sent him away, saying,
“He will fall to his master Saul to the jeopardy of our heads.” 20 As he went to Ziklag,
there fell to him of Manasseh, Adnah, and Jozabad, and Jediael, and Michael, and Jozabad,
and Elihu, and Zilthai, captains of the thousands that were of Manasseh. 21 And they
helped David against the band of the rovers: for they were all mighty men of valour, and
were captains in the host. 22 For at that time day by day there came to David to help him,
until it was a great host, like the host of God. 23 And these are the numbers of the bands
that were ready armed to the war, and came to David to Hebron, to turn the kingdom of
Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD . 24 The children of Judah that bare shield
and spear were six thousand and eight hundred, ready armed to the war. 25 Of the children
of Simeon, mighty men of valour for the war, seven thousand and one hundred. 26 Of the
children of Levi four thousand and six hundred. 27 And Jehoiada was the leader of the
Aaronites, and with him were three thousand and seven hundred; 28 And Zadok, a young
man mighty of valour, and of his father's house twenty and two captains. 29 And of the
children of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, three thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of
them had kept the ward of the house of Saul. 30 And of the children of Ephraim twenty
thousand and eight hundred, mighty men of valour, famous throughout the house of their
fathers. 31 And of the half tribe of Manasseh eighteen thousand, which were expressed by
name, to come and make David king. 32 And of the children of Issachar, which were men
that had understanding of the times,* to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them
were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment. 33 Of Zebulun, such
as went forth to battle, expert in war, with all instruments of war, fifty thousand, which
could keep rank: they were not of double heart. 34 And of Naphtali a thousand captains,
and with them with shield and spear thirty and seven thousand. 35 And of the Danites

15
expert in war twenty and eight thousand and six hundred. 36 And of Asher, such as went
forth to battle, expert in war, forty thousand. 37 And on the other side of Jordan, of the
Reubenites, and the Gadites, and of the half tribe of Manasseh, with all manner of
instruments of war for the battle, an hundred and twenty thousand. 38 All these men of
war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over
all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king. 39 And there
they were with David three days, eating and drinking: for their brethren had prepared for
them. 40 Moreover they that were nigh them, even unto Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali,
brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes
of figs, and bunches of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for
there was joy in Israel. 1 And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds,
and with every leader. 2 And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, “If it seem good
unto you, and that it be of the LORD our God, let us send abroad unto our brethren every
where, that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them also to the priests and Levites
which are in their cities and suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us: 3 And let us
bring again the ark of our God to us: for we enquired not at it in the days of Saul.” 4 And all
the congregation said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the
people. 5 So David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor of Egypt even unto the entering
of Hemath, to bring the ark of God from Kirjath-jearim. 6 And David went up, and all Israel,
to Baalah, that is, to Kirjath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up thence the ark
of God the LORD , that dwelleth between the cherubims, Whose name is called on it. 7 And
they carried the ark of God in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio
drave the cart. 8 And David and all Israel played before God with all their might, and with
singing, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with
trumpets.

David’s Appointments

I Chronicles 27:1–22: 1 Now the children of Israel after their number, to wit, the chief
fathers and captains of thousands and hundreds, and their officers that served the king in
any matter of the courses, which came in and went out month by month throughout all the
months of the year, of every course were twenty and four thousand. 2 Over the first course
for the first month was Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel: and in his course were twenty and
four thousand. 3 Of the children of Perez was the chief of all the captains of the host for
the first month. 4 And over the course of the second month was Dodai an Ahohite, and of
his course was Mikloth also the ruler: in his course likewise were twenty and four thousand.
5 The third captain of the host for the third month was Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, a chief
priest: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. 6 This is that Benaiah, who was
mighty among the thirty, and above the thirty: and in his course was Ammizabad his son. 7
The fourth captain for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his
son after him: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. 8 The fifth captain for the

16
fifth month was Shamhuth the Izrahite: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. 9
The sixth captain for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite: and in his
course were twenty and four thousand. 10 The seventh captain for the seventh month was
Helez the Pelonite, of the children of Ephraim: and in his course were twenty and four
thousand. 11 The eighth captain for the eighth month was Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the
Zarhites: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. 12 The ninth captain for the
ninth month was Abiezer the Anetothite, of the Benjamites: and in his course were twenty
and four thousand. 13 The tenth captain for the tenth month was Maharai the
Netophathite, of the Zarhites: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. 14 The
eleventh captain for the eleventh month was Benaiah the Pirathonite, of the children of
Ephraim: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. 15 The twelfth captain for the
twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel: and in his course were twenty and
four thousand. 16 Furthermore over the tribes of Israel: the ruler of the Reubenites was
Eliezer the son of Zichri: of the Simeonites, Shephatiah the son of Maachah: 17 Of the
Levites, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel: of the Aaronites, Zadok: 18 Of Judah, Elihu, one of
the brethren of David: of Issachar, Omri the son of Michael: 19 Of Zebulun, Ishmaiah the
son of Obadiah: of Naphtali, Jerimoth the son of Azriel: 20 Of the children of Ephraim,
Hoshea the son of Azaziah: of the half tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah: 21 Of the
half tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah: of Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of
Abner: 22 Of Dan, Azareel the son of Jeroham. These were the princes of the tribes of
Israel.

Groves, Altars, Images, and High Places Broken Down During Hezekiah’s Reign

II Chronicles 30:1–[Link] 1 And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters also
to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to
keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel. 2 For the king had taken counsel, and his
princes, and all the congregation in Jerusalem, to keep the passover in the second month. 3
For they could not keep it at that time, because the priests had not sanctified themselves
sufficiently, neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem. 4 And the
thing pleased the king and all the congregation. 5 So they established a decree to make
proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beer-sheba even to Dan, that they should come to
keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem: for they had not done it of a
long time in such sort as it was written. 6 So the posts went with the letters from the king
and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the
king, saying, “Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and
Israel, and He will return to the remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the
kings of Assyria. 7 And be not ye like your fathers, and like your brethren, which trespassed
against the LORD God of their fathers, Who therefore gave them up to desolation, as ye see.
8 Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves unto the LORD , and
enter into His sanctuary, which He hath sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your God,
that the fierceness of His wrath may turn away from you. 9 For if ye turn again unto the

17
LORD , your brethren and your children shall find compassion before them that lead them
captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is gracious and
merciful, and will not turn away His face from you, if ye return unto Him.” 10 So the posts
passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh even unto Zebulun:
but they laughed them to scorn, and mocked them. 11 Nevertheless divers of Asher and
Manasseh and of Zebulun humbled themselves, and came to Jerusalem. 12 Also in Judah
the hand of God was to give them one heart to do the commandment of the king and of the
princes, by the word of the LORD . 13 And there assembled at Jerusalem much people to
keep the feast of unleavened bread in the second month, a very great congregation. 14 And
they arose and took away the altars that were in Jerusalem, and all the altars for incense
took they away, and cast them into the brook Kidron. 15 Then they killed the passover on
the fourteenth day of the second month: and the priests and the Levites were ashamed,
and sanctified themselves, and brought in the burnt offerings into the house of the LORD . 16
And they stood in their place after their manner, according to the law of Moses the man of
God: the priests sprinkled the blood, which they received of the hand of the Levites. 17 For
there were many in the congregation that were not sanctified: therefore the Levites had
the charge of the killing of the passovers for every one that was not clean, to sanctify them
unto the LORD . 18 For a multitude of the people, even many of Ephraim, and Manasseh,
Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet did they eat the passover
otherwise than it was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, “The good LORD
pardon every one 19 That prepareth his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers,
though he be not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary.” 20 And the LORD
hearkened to Hezekiah, and healed the people. 21 And the children of Israel that were
present at Jerusalem kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with great gladness:
and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD day by day, singing with loud instruments
unto the LORD . 22 And Hezekiah spake comfortably unto all the Levites that taught the good
knowledge of the LORD : and they did eat throughout the feast seven days, offering peace
offerings, and making confession to the LORD God of their fathers. 23 And the whole
assembly took counsel to keep other seven days: and they kept other seven days with
gladness. 24 For Hezekiah king of Judah did give to the congregation a thousand bullocks
and seven thousand sheep; and the princes gave to the congregation a thousand bullocks
and ten thousand sheep: and a great number of priests sanctified themselves. 25 And all
the congregation of Judah, with the priests and the Levites, and all the congregation that
came out of Israel, and the strangers that came out of the land of Israel, and that dwelt in
Judah, rejoiced. 26 So there was great joy in Jerusalem: for since the time of Solomon the
son of David king of Israel there was not the like in Jerusalem. 27 Then the priests the
Levites arose and blessed the people: and their voice was heard, and their prayer came up
to His holy dwelling place, even unto heaven. 1 Now when all this was finished, all Israel
that were present went out to the cities of Judah, and brake the images in pieces, and cut
down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and
Benjamin, in Ephraim also and Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all
the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.

Issachar’s Inheritances

Manasseh Has Inheritance in Issachar

Joshua 17:7–13: 7 And the coast of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, that lieth
before Shechem; and the border went along on the right hand unto the inhabitants of En-
tappuah. 8 Now Manasseh had the land of Tappuah: but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh
belonged to the children of Ephraim; 9 And the coast descended unto the river Kanah,
southward of the river: these cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh: the coast
of Manasseh also was on the north side of the river, and the outgoings of it were at the sea:
10 Southward it was Ephraim’s, and northward it was Manasseh’s, and the sea is his border;
and they met together in Asher on the north, and in Issachar on the east. 11 And Manasseh
had in Issachar and in Asher Beth-shean and her towns, and Ibleam and her towns, and the
inhabitants of Dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of En-dor and her towns, and the
inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns, even
three countries. 12 Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of
those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. 13 Yet it came to pass, when the
children of Israel were waxen strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute; but did not
utterly drive them out.

Issachar’s Inheritance in the Promised Land

Joshua 19:17–23: 17 And the fourth lot came out to Issachar, for the children of Issachar
according to their families. 18 And their border was toward Jezreel, and Chesulloth, and
Shunem, 19 And Hapharaim, and Shion, and Anaharath, 20 And Rabbith, and Kishion, and
Abez, 21 And Remeth, and En-gannim, and En-haddah, and Beth-pazzez; 22 And the coast
reacheth to Tabor, and Shahazimah, and Bethshemesh; and the outgoings of their border
were at Jordan: sixteen cities with their villages. 23 This is the inheritance of the tribe of
the children of Issachar according to their families, the cities and their villages.

Levite Cities Assigned to Gershonites in the Territory of Issachar

Joshua 21:6; 27-33: 6 And the children of Gershon had by lot out of the families of the tribe
of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the
half tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities. 27 And unto the children of Gershon, of
the families of the Levites, out of the other half tribe of Manasseh they gave Golan in
Bashan with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Beesh-terah with her
suburbs; two cities. 28 And out of the tribe of Issachar, Kishon with her suburbs, Dabareh
with her suburbs, 29 Jarmuth with her suburbs, En-gannim with her suburbs; four cities. 30
And out of the tribe of Asher, Mishal with her suburbs, Abdon with her suburbs, 31 Helkath
with her suburbs, and Rehob with her suburbs; four cities. 32 And out of the tribe of
Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and

19
Hammoth-dor with her suburbs, and Kartan with her suburbs; three cities. 33 All the cities
of the Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities with their suburbs.

I Chronicles 6:62; 71–76: 62 And to the sons of Gershom throughout their families out of the
tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of
the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities. 71 Unto the sons of Gershom were given
out of the family of the half tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan with her suburbs, and
Ashtaroth with her suburbs: 72 And out of the tribe of Issachar; Kedesh with her suburbs,
Daberath with her suburbs, 73 And Ramoth with her suburbs, and Anem with her suburbs:
74 And out of the tribe of Asher; Mashal with her suburbs, and Abdon with her suburbs, 75
And Hukok with her suburbs, and Rehob with her suburbs: 76 And out of the tribe of
Naphtali; Kedesh in Galilee with her suburbs, and Hammon with her suburbs, and Kirjathaim
with her suburbs.

Sealing of the End Times

Revelation [Link] 7 Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi
were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand.

Issachar’s Inheritance at the End of the Millennium

Ezekiel 48:25–26; 33: 25 And by the border of Simeon, from the east side unto the west
side, Issachar a portion. 26 And by the border of Issachar, from the east side unto the west
side, Zebulun a portion. 33 And at the south side four thousand and five hundred measures:
and three gates; one gate of Simeon, one gate of Issachar, one gate of Zebulun.

Issacharite Stories

Nethaneel’s Offering for the Dedicating of the Altar

Numbers 7:1–6; 11; 18–23: 1 And it came to pass on the day that Moses had fully set up the
tabernacle, and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof, both the
altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them, and sanctified them; 2 That the
princes of Israel, heads of the house of their fathers, who were the princes of the tribes,
and were over them that were numbered, offered: 3 And they brought their offering before
the LORD , six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for two of the princes, and for
each one an ox: and they brought them before the tabernacle. 4 And the LORD spake unto
Moses, saying, 5 “Take it of them, that they may be to do the service of the tabernacle of
the congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to every man according to his
service.” 6 And Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them unto the Levites. 11
And the LORD said unto Moses, “They shall offer their offering, each prince on his day, for
the dedicating of the altar.” 18 On the second day Nethaneel the son of Zuar, prince of
Issachar, did offer: 19 He offered for his offering one silver charger, the weight whereof
was an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of
the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering: 20 One
spoon of gold of ten shekels, full of incense: 21 One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of
the first year, for a burnt offering: 22 One kid of the goats for a sin offering: 23 And for a
sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he goats, five lambs of the first year:
this was the offering of Nethaneel the son of Zuar.

These Shall Stand Upon Mount Ebal to Bless the People

Deuteronomy 27:11–26: 11 And Moses charged the people the same day, saying, 12 “These
shall stand upon mount Gerizim to bless the people, when ye are come over Jordan;
Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Joseph, and Benjamin: 13 And these shall
stand upon mount Ebal to curse; Reuben, Gad, and Asher, and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
14 And the Levites shall speak, and say unto all the men of Israel with a loud voice, 15
‘Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the
LORD , the work of the hands of the craftsman, and putteth it in a secret place.’ And all the
people shall answer and say, ‘Amen.’ 16 ‘Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his
mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’ 17 Cursed be he that removeth his
neighbour’s landmark. And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’ 18 ‘Cursed be he that maketh
the blind to wander out of the way.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’ 19 ‘Cursed be he
that perverteth the judgment of the stranger, fatherless, and widow.’ And all the people
shall say, ‘Amen.’ 20 Cursed be he that lieth with his father’s wife; because he uncovereth
his father’s skirt.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’ 21 ‘Cursed be he that lieth with any
manner of beast.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’ 22 ‘Cursed be he that lieth with his
sister, the daughter of his father, or the daughter of his mother.’ And all the people shall

21
say, ‘Amen.’ 23 ‘Cursed be he that lieth with his mother in law.’ And all the people shall
say, ‘Amen.’ 24 ‘Cursed be he that smiteth his neighbour secretly.’ And all the people shall
say, ‘Amen.’ 25 ‘Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person.’ And all the
people shall say, ‘Amen.’ 26 ‘Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to
do them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

Moses’ Blessing to Issachar

Deuteronomy 33:18–19: 18 And of Zebulun he said, “Rejoice, Zebulun, in thy going out;
And, Issachar, in thy tents. 19 They shall call the people unto the mountain; There they
shall offer sacrifices of righteousness: for they shall suck of the abundance of the seas, and
of treasures hid in the sand.”

Tola Judges Israel

Judges 10:1–2: 1 And after Abimelech there arose to defend Israel Tola the son of Puah, the
son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in mount Ephraim. 2 And he judged
Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir.

Job

E. W. Bullinger contends that the Job listed in Issachar’s genealogies is the author of the
Book of Job. His “NOTE ON THE DATE AND AUTHORSHIP OF JOB” follows:

A lengthened account of the discussion of these questions would be without profit.

But, if JOB was the son of ISSACHAR (Gen. 46.13), then we have a clue that may help us to a
decision of both.

It is better to keep within the Bible itself for the settlement of its problems; and to treat
the whole Book as the context of all its parts.

There is no reason why JOB should not be the son of ISSACHAR, and no better evidence
forthcoming for a different view. The three friends of Job were descendants of ESAU ; they
would therefore be contemporaries.

ELIPHAZ, of TEMAN in Idumea, was a son of ESAU , and had a son called TEMAN , from whom his
country took its name (Gen. 36. 10, 11). It was noted for its “wise men” (Jer. 49. 7); and is
mentioned with EDOM (Amos 1. 11, 12). Compare Jer. 25. 23, where both are connected
with BUZ, the brother of UZ (Gen. 22. 21).

BILDAD the Shuhite. SHUAH was the sixth son of ABRAHAM by KETURAH (Gen. 25. 2); and is

22
mentioned in connection with ESAU , EDOM, and TEMAN (Jer. 49. 8).

ZOPHAR the Naamathite. NAAMAH (now Nâ’aneh), six miles south of Lod, in the lowlands of
Judah).

If JOB was the son of ISSACHAR (Gen. 46.13), he would have gone down to Egypt with his
father.

ISSACHAR was forty at “the going down to Egypt.” (See Ap. 50. III, p. 52.)

If JOB was the third son (Gen. 46.13), he would have been about twenty at that time (1706
B .C .).

We are told that he lived 140 years after his “double” blessing (42.10). If that “double”
blessing included length of years, then his age would have been 70 + 140 = 210 (i.e. three
seventies of years). His lifetime would be from 1726–1516 B .C .

According to this, he was born the year after JOSEPH was sold, and died 119 years after the
death of JOSEPH (in 1635 B .C .). When JOSEPH died, JOB was ninety-one. If his “double”
blessing did include length of years, then his affliction took place twenty-one years
previously, when he was seventy. His removal from EGYPT to Uz must therefore have taken
place earlier still.

When JOB died (1516 B .C .) MOSES was fifty-five, and had been in MIDIAN fifteen years (twenty-
five years before the Exodus).

This would account for JOB being a worshiper of the God of ABRAHAM, and explains how
Moses could have been the author of the book, and perhaps and eye- and ear-witness of the
events it records in Midian. If so, the time has come (as Dr. Stier foretold and hoped [in
“The Words of the Lord Jesus,” Vol. iv., p. 406]) when this book would be regarded as “the
Porch of the Sanctuary”; and when this “fundamental wisdom of original revelation will
cease to be ascribed, as it now is by some of the best, to a later poet in Israel.”

Solomon’s Officers

I Kings 4:1–18: 1 So king Solomon was king over all Israel. 2 And these were the princes
which he had; Azariah the son of Zadok the priest, 3 Elihoreph and Ahiah, the sons of
Shisha, scribes; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, the recorder. 4 And Benaiah the son of
Jehoiada was over the host: and Zadok and Abiathar were the priests: 5 And Azariah the son
of Nathan was over the officers: and Zabud the son of Nathan was principal officer, and the
king’s friend: 6 And Ahishar was over the household: and Adoniram the son of Abda was over
the tribute. 7 And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, which provided victuals for

23
the king and his household: each man his month in a year made provision. 8 And these are
their names: The son of Hur, in mount Ephraim: 9 The son of Dekar, in Makaz, and in Shaal-
bim, and Beth-shemesh, and Elon-beth-hanan: 10 The son of Hesed, in Aruboth; to him
pertained Sochoh, and all the land of Hepher: 11 The son of Abinadab, in all the region of
Dor; which had Taphath the daughter of Solomon to wife: 12 Baana the son of Ahilud; to
him pertained Taanach and Megiddo, and all Beth-shean, which is by Zartanah beneath
Jezreel, from Beth-shean to Abel-meholah, even unto the place that is beyond Jokneam:
13 The son of Geber, in Ramoth-gilead; to him pertained the towns of Jair the son of
Manasseh, which are in Gilead; to him also pertained the region of Argob, which is in
Bashan, threescore great cities with walls and brasen bars: 14 Ahinadab the son of Iddo had
Mahanaim: 15 Ahimaaz was in Naphtali; he also took Basmath the daughter of Solomon to
wife: 16 Baanah the son of Hushai was in Asher and in Aloth: 17 Jehoshaphat the son of
Paruah, in Issachar: 18 Shimei the son of Elah, in Benjamin: 19 Geber the son of Uri was in
the country of Gilead, in the country of Sihon king of the Amorites, and of Og king of
Bashan; and he was the only officer which was in the land.

Baasha and Elah

I Kings 15:25–[Link] 25 And Nadab the son of Jeroboam began to reign over Israel in the
second year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned over Israel two years. 26 And he did evil in
the sight of the LORD , and walked in the way of his father, and in his sin wherewith he made
Israel to sin. 27 And Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against
him; and Baasha smote him at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines; for Nadab and
all Israel laid siege to Gibbethon. 28 Even in the third year of Asa king of Judah did Baasha
slay him, and reigned in his stead. 29 And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he smote
all the house of Jeroboam; he left not to Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had
destroyed him, according unto the saying of the LORD , which He spake by His servant Ahijah
the Shilonite: 30 Because of the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned, and which he made
Israel sin, by his provocation wherewith he provoked the LORD God of Israel to anger. 31
Now the rest of the acts of Nadab, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of
the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 32 And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of
Israel all their days. 33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah began Baasha the son of
Ahijah to reign over all Israel in Tirzah, twenty and four years. 34 And he did evil in the
sight of the LORD , and walked in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin wherewith he made
Israel to sin. 1 Then the word of the LORD came to Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha,
saying, 2 “Forasmuch as I exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince over My
people Israel; and thou hast walked in the way of Jeroboam, and hast made My people
Israel to sin, to provoke Me to anger with their sins; 3 Behold, I will take away the posterity
of Baasha, and the posterity of his house; and will make thy house like the house of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat. 4 Him that dieth of Baasha in the city shall the dogs eat; and
him that dieth of his in the fields shall the fowls of the air eat.” 5 Now the rest of the acts
of Baasha, and what he did, and his might, are they not written in the book of the

24
chronicles of the kings of Israel? 6 So Baasha slept with his fathers, and was buried in
Tirzah: and Elah his son reigned in his stead. 7 And also by the hand of the prophet Jehu
the son of Hanani came the word of the LORD against Baasha, and against his house, even for
all the evil that he did in the sight of the LORD , in provoking Him to anger with the work of
his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam; and because he killed him. 8 In the twenty
and sixth year of Asa king of Judah began Elah the son of Baasha to reign over Israel in
Tirzah, two years. 9 And his servant Zimri, captain of half his chariots, conspired against
him, as he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza steward of his house in
Tirzah. 10 And Zimri went in and smote him, and killed him, in the twenty and seventh year
of Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his stead. 11 And it came to pass, when he began to
reign, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he slew all the house of Baasha: he left him not
one that pisseth against a wall, neither of his kinsfolks, nor of his friends. 12 Thus did Zimri
destroy all the house of Baasha, according to the word of the LORD , which He spake against
Baasha by Jehu the prophet, 13 For all the sins of Baasha, and the sins of Elah his son, by
which they sinned, and by which they made Israel to sin, in provoking the LORD God of Israel
to anger with their vanities. 14 Now the rest of the acts of Elah, and all that he did, are
they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

Issachar’s Genealogies
Issachar Listed as One of Jacob’s Twelve Sons

Genesis 35:22–26: 22 And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went
