Bad Moon Rising

by Joy Usher
I see the bad moon arising I see trouble on the way I see earthquakes and lightnin I see bad times today.
John C. Fogerty

n early October 2012 Saturn moved into the sign of Scorpio. It will remain in this fixed water sign until late December 2014 when it will enter Sagittarius for the first time in 30 years. Saturn does one more stint in Scorpio when it retrogrades back into this sign in mid June 2015 and finally leaves Scorpio by direct motion in mid September 2015. Saturns last journey through Scorpio occurred through the years of 1983 to 1985. Saturn has just left its sign of exaltation Libra and has no dignity in Scorpio, so why should its journey through this sign be significant? I believe Saturns pathway through Scorpio has less to do with this planets own dignities, and has more to do with two other planets of interest, Moon and Mars, especially if we observe a couple of rules from the past.

The Dispositor : A Planet with Duty of Care

In the model of the Thema Mundi chart - the theoretical Chart of the World- the planet Mars rules the signs of Aries and Scorpio. This means that Mars oversees the workings of these two signs so that wherever they lie in a chart, Mars is required to keep an eye on both of them, regardless of where Mars itself is found. Mars is responsible for Aries and Scorpio and has what could be described as an astrological duty of care over these two signs. That means not only the signs themselves and the houses they find themselves occupying, but also concerns any planet which finds itself passing through the signs of Mars. Imagine that in the same way as a king is responsible for his land and has sovereignty over his subjects, so too does Mars have sovereignty over the signs of Aries and Scorpio. A kings law must be followed and a subject is disposed to follow that law, otherwise he pays the price. A planet that finds itself in another planets sign is disposed to observe the laws of that ruling planet. This means that any planet in the sign of either Aries or Scorpio is disposed to Mars and must observe and acknowledge his influence over them. Mars is the dispositor of its own two signs, and by association, is also the dispositor of a planet which finds itself in that sign. The state of Mars will have a direct effect on a

planet in Mars signs, so it is always important to keep a close eye on the ruler of a particular sign. Just as a weakened or endangered king often proves to be ineffective in protecting his subjects or anyone passing through his territory, so too does a planet in poor condition act as a poor dispositor for its signs and any planet unfortunate enough to find itself in the land of a misdirected planet, and therefore must be aware of the dangers it may encounter. The practice of dispositors demonstrates very clearly why the ancients liked the idea of planets being in their own signs of rulership they were their own dispositors (kings in their own right) and therefore did not have to answer to any other planet. More than having power, they had independence and selfgovernance and as such, they bowed to no other planets wishes.

Saturn in Scorpio : One Malefic Disposited by Another Malefic

Some astrologers find the naming of Saturn and Mars as malefics to be quite confrontational, but in the true sense of the word used by Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD, these two planets were named as such because of their extreme qualities. Saturn was said to be extremely cold as it was the furthest planet from the earth in a geocentric model, and Mars was said to be extremely hot as it lay so close to the Sun in the same model. As the two extremes in temperature, these planets had the ability to cause the physical world great stress and to either inhibit or delay growth in the case of Saturn (cold), or to retard or enflame growth dangerously in the case of Mars (heat). They werent bad in nature they just brought extremity in temperature to life which in turn resulted in difficulty, hardship or at the very least, a lack of ease in daily living arrangements. They both shared the quality of dry and as such were inclined towards brittleness causing or indicating confrontation, separation, and isolation in one form or another. Currently Saturn is traversing Scorpio, which means it is disposited by Mars. Mars has a way of manifesting or being symbolic for all kinds of conflicting energies ranging from courageous, energetic (but not always in a good way), forthright and determined, to less attractive features such as a tendency to be power-hungry, argumentative, dictatorial, and downright foolhardy. Over the next two years Saturn is influenced by Mars, and that may not always be a good thing. As the two planets belong to conflicting sects : Saturn to the diurnal world, and Mars to the nocturnal, the battle between the two forces may alter as swiftly as night follows day and the balance of power may move from one to the other over a period of 12-hourly intervals.

The Swift Moving Moon

The Chaldean Order of the Planets lists the seven original planets in order of their respective speeds, starting from the slowest planet Saturn which has a cycle of 28 years, to Jupiter (12 years), Mars (2 years), to the Sun (1 year), then Venus (just under 1year), Mercury (under 1 year) and lastly the Moon which takes only one month to complete its cycle of the ecliptic. Symbolically this means the soul travels past the planet closest to the high heavens (Saturn) and progresses through the faster moving

planets atmosphere to come to rest at the Moon, the most earthly of the planets, until birth occurs at the allotted time. In terms of the more modern psychological astrology, a combination of Saturn with the Moon has significant impact on the emotions of the individual and their relationship to their mother. However, in ancient terms Moon conjunct Saturn meant the bringing together of these two divine parentheses which acted as planetary sentinels for the space the soul needed to cover between heaven and earth it was a sacred and profound event which happened once a month as the speedy Moon caught up and passed its cumbersome opponent, Saturn. Here the limitations of the physical world were experienced, and the sorrows of the soul could be lightened by the Moon if only for a short period of time.

Moon in Scorpio : That Time of the Month

The Moon travels approximately 14 degrees a day, and will occupy each sign for just over two days. The Moon like any other planet finds some signs to its liking and others not so much. The Moon is in rulership in Cancer and exalted in the sign of Taurus. The opposing signs mark the Moons position in detriment (Capricorn) and fall (Scorpio). The Moon in fall can indicate all sorts of generic problems for the nocturnal luminary : illness, physical strain, family trauma, and emotional distress. As the Moon passes through Scorpio, the sign of its fall, it will encounter Saturn over the next two years. In real terms this means there is a potential for all things lunar to take on the handicap of Saturn, and whilst the period is very short, only 2 days and will easily pass, I feel it is worth taking note of this time. This is the kind of testing ground whereby astrologers learn their trade we have the theory, but will the practical world back it up? Are these 2 days a time when we fight more with our loved ones, experience a decline in our health, or register a separation of some kind? In other words, do we feel the scorpions sting more acutely when Saturn and the Moon are disposited by Mars? Do we make critical decisions during this time and then take the time between each conjunction to enact them or recover from them?

NB Astrologers or Interested Parties: To Be Marked in Your Diary

The following times show the past, present and future 2-day time periods when Saturn has been and will continue to be in Scorpio. Alongside it is the much shorter period when the Moon crosses Saturn and is in its sign of fall. Lastly, the column for Mars shows the state of the Dispositor of both Saturn and the Moon for when they are in Scorpio. The dates I have given for the Moons Ingress into Scorpio are taken from the Ephemeris for Greenwich Mean Time. For more accurate timing regarding hours entering or leaving consult a computer generated chart. The dates of the Moon in Scorpio are the ones which need to be recorded in your diary and notes made at or after these two days of the month. It is very easy to forget small incidents in such a short time period, so recording feelings as well as events immediately in the diary is a good idea. Also, you dont necessarily need to mark Saturns progress through Scorpio in your diary, but be aware that Saturn retrogrades back into the late

degrees of Scorpio through several months of 2015. I have marked these dates with an asterix in the table below. I would suggest that you pay particular notice to these dates if you have a fixed cross of matter or angles in fixed signs, or if you have any sensitive planets in Scorpio as these transiting planetary combinations are likely to act as catalysts for change and I know how much we fixed signs love change! Also, watch and record what happens when Mars, the dispositor of Saturn and the Moon, is either in dignity or in debility, as Mars condition will affect the nature of the Moon Saturn conjunction (see Mars in Libra from December 2013 until the last week in July 2014!)

It wont take much effort to mark the Moons position in Scorpio and you might find it very interesting to make a few quick notes on what happens during this time. I would love feedback if you think it is of note and has been of benefit to be forewarned of the Moons movement over Saturn, and whether you noticed Mars influence through his role as both of these planets dispositor. Good luck and good scribbling!

Common questions

Mars' state is paramount during Saturn’s transit through Scorpio from October 2012 to September 2015 because it disposes both Saturn and any transiting Moon during this period. The condition of Mars either amplifies or mitigates the intrinsic challenges of this transit. For example, when Mars is exalted in Capricorn, its strong position may provide stability and a more constructive outlet for the inherent tensions of the Saturn-Moon conjunction in Scorpio. Conversely, when Mars is in fall or detriment, like in Cancer or Libra, its weakened state might exacerbate the stressors associated with Saturn's imposing coldness and inhibiting influence, increasing the likelihood of conflict and difficulty .

When the Moon transits through Scorpio, a sign in which it is considered to be in fall, it forms a conjunction with Saturn, leading to potential challenges such as emotional distress and strains in interpersonal relationships. Both the Moon and Saturn are disposited by Mars when in Scorpio, which means Mars' condition influences the mood and outcomes of this transit. While the Moon’s transit through Scorpio lasts only about two days, it can emphasize the challenges associated with the Saturn-Moon interaction. The swift-moving Moon’s periodic conjunctions with Saturn bring recurring themes of limitation and emotional depth, with Mars’ influence further intensifying or altering the experience based on its own astrological dignity .

Mars' ability to protect or influence planets within its rulership relies heavily on its own astrological condition. As the dispositor of Aries and Scorpio, Mars oversees and influences any planets situated in these signs. When Mars is in a strong astrological position, such as in its own sign or when it is exalted, it can effectively manage and influence the planets under its jurisdiction, mitigating conflicts and enhancing positive attributes. However, when Mars is in a weakened condition, such as in detriment or fall, its ability to act as a protective and guiding force diminishes. This weakened state can lead to heightened conflicts and stress, as it parallels the ineffectiveness of a weakened ruler struggling to govern effectively .

During Saturn's journey through Scorpio from October 2012 to September 2015, there is a significant focus on transformation and the impact of deep-seated emotions. This period is characterized by Saturn's lack of dignity in Scorpio, emphasizing the importance of the planet's interactions with Mars, which rules Scorpio. Mars’ influence, ranging from energetic to argumentative, might trigger power struggles and transformation. The association between the two 'malefics'—Saturn's inhibiting cold and Mars' aggressive heat—can lead to stress and inhibited growth, affecting emotional and physical domains. The challenges that arise when Saturn retrogrades into Scorpio again in June 2015 accentuate transitions and transformations in personal and societal structures .

Mars, the ruler of Scorpio, acts as a dispositor for any planet transiting this sign, including Saturn and the Moon. This role means Mars influences the energy and expression of those planets while they are in Scorpio. The condition of Mars during these times—whether it is in dignity or debility—directly affects the nature of the Saturn-Moon conjunction in Scorpio. For example, when Mars is in fall or detriment, it may amplify tensions and challenges associated with Saturn and the Moon's attributes. Conversely, when Mars is in a stronger position, this might mitigate negative influences, offering opportunities for transformation and resolution of challenges. Thus, Mars’ condition colors the interpretation of Saturn and the Moon's conjunction, potentially influencing emotional response and decision-making processes .

Recording the dates when the Moon is in Scorpio and noting Mars' condition during these times help astrologers to observe and analyze real-world effects of astrological theories. Since these transits symbolize potential emotional and relational stress, tracking them can verify whether anticipated influences manifest as predicted. Additionally, Mars' condition affects how the Moon's conjunction with Saturn manifests, thus providing insights into individual experiences and larger psycho-emotional trends. By documenting these events, astrologers can refine their interpretations, understand time-sensitive influences, and offer informed guidance, thereby increasing the practical applicability of astrological insights .

The 'malefic' qualities historically attributed to Saturn and Mars are significantly linked to their temperature extremes within the geocentric model of ancient astrology. Saturn was considered malefic due to its extreme coldness, symbolizing limitation, delay, and hardship, as it was the furthest planet. Mars' extreme heat, being closer to the Sun, represented aggression, haste, and potential conflict. These temperature associations led to their designation as 'malefics', not because they were inherently evil, but because of the extreme conditions they embodied, which could lead to challenges in human and environmental experiences. Understanding these attributes is key to grasping how their influences were interpreted as impacting the physical and emotional world .

The 'Chaldean Order of the Planets' places Saturn as the slowest and the Moon as the fastest, accentuating the symbolic journey from the highest heavens to Earth. In this framework, Saturn represents the boundary of the celestial and is associated with limitation and endurance, while the Moon, being the most earthly, signifies the swift passage of time and emotional immediacy. Their conjunction symbolizes the meeting of these extremes, where soul meets matter. The Moon’s quick movement periodically catching up with Saturn allows for moments of emotional reflection and potential relief from material constraints, reflecting the soul's passage through heavenly and earthly realms. Such symbolic interaction during their conjunction underscores themes of emotional and existential boundaries .

During the Moon's transient period in Scorpio, where it is in its fall, individuals might experience heightened emotional turbulence, sensitivity, and even familial or health issues. This period is marked by the Moon’s vulnerability and potential challenges such as stress or emotional conflicts. With Mars as its dispositor, the nature of these experiences can vary depending on Mars’ condition. When Mars is dignified, there might be opportunities for growth and constructive confrontation. However, if Mars is debilitated, these issues might intensify, leading to significant stress and impulsive decision-making, as the emotional depth of Scorpio combines with Mars' assertiveness or aggression .

Saturn is considered a 'malefic' due to its extreme coldness associated with its position as the furthest planet from Earth in the geocentric model, while Mars is also considered 'malefic' due to its extreme heat, being close to the Sun in the same model. When Saturn traverses Scorpio, it is disposited by Mars, which means Mars influences Saturn. The combination of Saturn's cold, inhibiting nature and Mars' hot, potentially aggressive attributes can result in stress and inhibit growth. This interaction between two planets of conflicting sects—Saturn belonging to the diurnal world and Mars to the nocturnal—can cause shifts in balance and power over intervals, reflecting their intrinsic extreme qualities .
