News From Room 207

Week of 5/13/13

Happy Mothers Day! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend. I wanted to thank you for the thoughtful emails, cards and treats I received for Teacher Appreciation week. Thank you so much for thinking of me! The Wax Museum on Monday was a huge success. Your children were well prepared and very creative with their costume choices. It is always one of my favorite events of the year. Great job everyone! We have a very busy week ahead of us with Math MCAS on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please be sure your child is well rested each day and has a water bottle and a healthy snack. If you would like to donate sugar-free gum or water bottles, please feel free to do so. We will not have math club this week due to MCAS and homework will be greatly reduced. On Thursday afternoon, we will have a special presentation by the High School Chemistry Club and we will have our States and Capitals quiz for the West region. Finally, on Friday we have our field trip to SELCO. Chaperones should be at school by 9:15AM.

Read Aloud Our read aloud is Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Patterson. In the story, fifth grader Jesse Aaron's dreams of becoming the fastest runner in his class are dashed when newcomer Leslie Burke outruns everybody, even him. But Jess and Leslie begin a friendship, and soon they discover a magical kingdom in the forest, where they reign as king and queen. The friendship between young Jess and Leslie grows as they meet in Terabithia their secret hiding place. Science We will explore the difference between series and parallel circuits this week. We will continue with more hands-on experiments with electricity.

Math We will continue with Unit 11 this week and review. Our number is 0. Please check in with your child to be sure they have completed the study link as well as the assigned math boxes each night. Social Studies This week, groups of children will present their posters on the West region and briefly visit Hawaii. Our states and capitals quiz is on Thursday, May 16th. English Language Arts We will focus on writing the final draft of our School Uniform pieces this week. We have done considerable research on the benefits of having school uniforms and the benefits of allowing students to choose their own wardrobe. It was very interesting that we found more evidence in favor of uniforms although the majority of our class did not agree with our findings.
