Advances in Digital Flight Control Systems

Digital flight control systems have largely replaced older mechanical and hydraulic systems. Fly-by-wire systems use electronic signals rather than manual flight controls, allowing computer control of aircraft. Sensors provide data to computers, which automatically move control surfaces to stabilize the aircraft. India's Tejas fighter was an early adopter of fly-by-wire. Newer digital fly-by-wire systems use computers to process sensor inputs and pilot commands, solving equations to determine control surface movements. Intelligent flight control systems aim to compensate for aircraft damage in flight through techniques like using engine thrust if hydraulics fail.

Digital flight Control System

In Modern era , Aircrafts Deploys Digital control system for controlling the operations in aircrafts, but in past decades mechanical and hydro-mechanical flight control systems were used. They are relatively heavy and require a careful routing of cables through aircraft by systems of pulley, crank and hydraulic pipes. they have an limited capability to compensate for changing aerodynamic conditions and have dangerous characteristics such as stalling, spinning with these systems which affects the stability of the system , These drawbacks are being overcomed by digital control systems. Fly-By-Wire(FBW) System Replaces the manual flight control of aircraft with electronic interface .FBW control systems allows aircraft computers to perform tasks without pilot input. The movements of flight controls are converted to electronic signals that are transmitted by wires, and control computers determine how to move the actuators at each control surface to provide the precise response. Gyroscopes fitted with sensors are mounted in an aircraft to sense movement changes in the pitch, roll and yaw axes. Any movement results in signals to the computer, which automatically moves control actuators to stabilize the aircraft,By this way Stability and control of system is being achieved. Recently India Made an Indigenous Light weight combat aircraft TEJAS Mark-I which uses Fly-bywire control system in it. To increase the flexibility in Fly-By-wire we go for Digital Fly-ByWire(Fly-via-Computer) In which Signal processing is done by the Digital Computer . since the digital computers can receive input from any aircraft sensors , The computers sense position from aircraft sensors and force inputs from pilot controls. They solve differential equations to determine the appropriate command signals that move the flight controls to execute the intentions of the pilot . Boeing Airbus A320,Falcon 7X aircrafts uses digital Fly- By-Wire control system. Recent advancements in Digital control of Aircrafts includes Fly-By-Optics, Power-By-Wire, Fly-By-Wireless, Intelligent Flight control System. Fly-By-Optics uses fiber optic cables instead of wires to increase the transferring rate of data at higher speeds. In Fly-By-Wireless instead of using wired protocol in physical layer a wireless protocol is being deployed. Wiring increases the cost and adds considerable weight to aircraft to overcome this Fly-by-wireless is being Developed. In Power-By-Wire Elimination of the bulky and heavy Hydraulic circuits is being done. The hydraulic circuit is replaced by an electrical power circuit. The power circuits power electrical

or self-contained electrohydraulic actuators that are controlled by the digital flight control computers. Benefits of power-By-Wire is weight savings and tighter integration of aircraft control system and avionics systems .This is system is currently used as backup in Airbus A380 and Boeing 787, when the total hydraulic system fails .

Intelligent Flight Control system (IFCS), ultimate goal is to compensate for aircraft damage and failure during flight such as automatically using engine thrust to compensate the loss of hydraulics ,loss of engine ,etc. ICFS is a system developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), is designed to compensate for damages to the aircraft with a number of failsafe and an intelligent neural network.. Learning how to operate a flight control system can take time, because there is a great deal of information to absorb. In addition to learning about the dynamics of flight, the pilot needs to become familiar with a huge array of controls which do everything from moving the landing gear on the aircraft to adjusting the flaps on the wings during takeoff and landing.
