Stewardship of the Good News

Blessed be the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting, amen. As I lay here typing this I have to say the last two weeks have given me a new perspective on life: physically, mentally, and spiritually; and through it all I have gained a new sense of gratitude. On February 15th I underwent a surgery on my left ankle. The doctor screwed in a titanium plate, and several braided titanium wires along with some new ligaments in order to stabilize and hold together my ankle and the large bones of my lower leg. I was told going into it that recovery would be painful and long, I would need to keep my leg elevated, and that I would be non-weight bearing for 4-6 weeks. Being honest, I didnt truly understand what that all meant. Ive had sick days at home, in which I remember saying I didnt get off the couch all day, but now being stuck I have learned that I certainly got up plenty! I live quite an active life, between being the best dad I know how to be to Chloe, Henry, and Isaac, as well as good partner and husband to Jennifer in my home life, and being an active member and leader of our faith community here at Peace, I am accustomed to burning the candle at both ends. Although I pushed through the pain of the original injury that brought me to this, in order to heal correctly to prevent longterm issues, and quite frankly just the pain of the surgical recovery I cant just push through now, and have had to slow down, really to a complete stop. Other than the restroom Im only allowed upright to move from bed to the couch in my living room, and since having my foot down hurts as much as it does I do both as infrequently as possible. Although this is taken quite the toll on me physically, mentally it has been just as interesting. Doing things for, and taking care of others is not just what I do vocationally, in genuinely is a large part of my identity. This has been a struggle to grasp, as not only can I not really do things for others, I am really even incapable of taking care of myself. This is not all doom and gloom. In fact, having to rely on others (primarily my beautiful bride) has reminded me just how strong important my relationships are, and that they arent held together by what I do, but by who we are together. Finally, this experience has continued to shape my faith life. I have found that personally during times of both great stress as well as abundance of time my prayer life tends to make great strides, the last two weeks are no exception. I have been praying for healing and comfort for myself, ease and patience for my family, and wisdom and skill for my doctor, but I have also been praying for all of you. I have a list of all of our members, new and old, weekly attendees' and those whom struggle to attend, and I have been spending a good amount of time praying through that list. Its amazing the acknowledgement on my part that even though Im not able to care for you the way I would like, to know that God is still taking care of each and every one of you, and putting into your path people who God is working through to accomplish just that. Its a blessing to me. I want to finish off this months newsletter article with a note of gratitude. The outpouring of support from you has been amazing. I know that having your pastor laid up is inconvenient and challenging, but I havent heard that sentiment from you. Instead I have heard encouragement, well wishes, and empathy. Thank you. Peace truly is my family, and your thoughts, prayers and get well cards have meant so much, I cant express my gratitude enough. ~Pr. Matthew

Peace Lutheran Church engages its members through various roles and responsibilities, such as serving on councils (e.g., Nancy Waugh as Chairperson and Tom Perry as a member) and participating in events like the Men's Annual Meatball Supper and Palm Sunday Brunch . The church also involved youth in leadership during worship services and organized choir and skit practices, demonstrating active participation. Members were also responsible for overseeing and executing tasks, such as maintaining the church library, handling finances, and coordinating events like WELCA meetings .

Logistical considerations in Peace Lutheran Church's March planning included coordinating practice sessions for the Palm Sunday skit and parade, arranging community service activities like muffin delivery, and facilitating orders for Easter Lilies with Simpli-Flowers . They scheduled multiple rehearsals for skit participants, planned timing for the Altar Guild Palm Sunday Brunch, and ensured adequate assembly of relief kits for Lutheran World Relief. The church also managed meeting schedules, such as the Peace Cemetery Association's annual meeting and balancing regular religious services throughout Lent .

Peace Lutheran Church incorporated community feedback and participation by encouraging member involvement in decision-making processes, such as inviting members to help with event organization, participate in educational skits, and advise on church enhancements, like painting projects . The church council meetings facilitated member input regarding operational issues, such as approving memorial fund uses and selecting council members . They also sought community engagement for activities beyond the church, like organizing bids for cemetery maintenance and soliciting donations for World Relief kits .

Peace Lutheran Church made several adjustments for Lent and Easter observances, including arranging Lenten suppers and worship services on Wednesdays and special services on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday .
