Council President Gloria Encourages San Diego: SHOW YOUR LOVE Raise Awareness and Encourage Participation for Red Donation Stations; Donations Help Fund Move-in Kits for Homeless
SAN DIEGO, CA (February 14, 2013) Today, in an effort to end homelessness in San Diego, Council President Todd Gloria, along with the Downtown San Diego Partnership and other ending homelessness advocates, encouraged San Diegans to Show Their Love on Valentines Day and raise awareness for the Movin Home program. The Movin Home program helps fun move-in kits to homeless individuals and families via red donation stations placed throughout downtown. To date, $20,000 has been raised. In December, I announced my goal to end homelessness here in the next four years. Our progress means that people are moving from the streets into housing, which is not always the easiest transition. Getting people stabilized in their new homes is an essential and often overlooked piece of ending the cycle of homelessness, said Council President Gloria. The group of ending homelessness advocates encouraged those who live in, work, or visit downtown to keep an eye out for the donation stationswhich look like red meters. Donations received through donation stations go to the Downtown San Diego Partnerships Foundation, a 501(c)3, which helps pay for move-in kits, valued at about $1,000 each. These kits help pay for furniture, bathroom and kitchen supplies, and other household necessities. They are a key ingredient to ending homelessness in downtown. A total of 8 meters are placed throughout downtownmade possible by a generous donation by the IPS Group, Inc. Another 17 meters are slated to be placed in the ground in the near future. The Movin Home donation stations allow the public to make direct donations to help end homelessness downtown, and help eliminate panhandling on our streets, said Kris Michell, President/CEO of the Downtown San Diego Partnership. The Downtown San Diego Partnership is committed working with community partners to end homelessness in San Diego. We especially appreciate Council President Glorias leadership on this effort. The Council President was joined by the Downtown San Diego Partnerships President/CEO Kris Michell, San Diego Housing Commission President/CEO Rick Gentry, Ending Homelessness in Downtown San Diego Co-Chair Robin Madaffer, and other ending homelessness advocates. -MORE-

Through the Movin Home program and the Downtown San Diego Partnerships Work Your Way Home program, the group has successfully helped more than 250 of the most vulnerable homeless get off the streets in the last two years. You may not have millions to donate to build a new homeless services center or provide job training, but you probably have a dime or a few quarters in your car or in your pocket to drop into a Donation Station. Its pretty easy to Show Your Love this Valentines Day, said Council President Gloria. ###
