Snow, Moisture and Temps
This morning, temperatures from ND to Florida are cold, reaching below freezing in N Florida, zero in Illinois, and 30F in Minnesota. Next week, temperatures will rebound, hitting the mid 70s in Kansas...mid 50s in South Dakota and Iowa. Meanwhile, a series of clippers will bring almost daily light snows to the N Plains and Great Lakes. Then the melt begins, awaiting a Midwest storm around a week from now.

As of last night, 46% of the nation was snow covered. A month ago, coverage was at 66%. The northern Plains is at 98.9% covered, at an average depth of 9.9 inches. In 2011, when significant spring flooding hit the Missouri River Basin, the northern Plains was 99.6% covered, at an average depth of 15.3 inches.

Snow moisture (snow water equivalent) is currently approaching 2 inches across the northern Plains (Canadian Prairie is at 5+ inches) and a meager 0.01-0.40 inches across the Central Plains and Eastern Corn Belt. Large portions of Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana and Ohio remain snow free or at less than 1/2 inch. South Dakota rates their winter wheat snow protection at 84% poor...in North Dakota snow cover is rated 44 percent adequate for their winter wheat crop.
When the Missouri River flooded in 2011, it was due to deep snowpack in the northern Rockies and heavy spring rains in E Montana. Snowpack in the northern Rockies is now at a decent depth of 36 inches, more that on Feb 1 in 2011 (flood year) when it was at 34 inches on Feb, 1.

At 7am CST temperatures were below zero over snow covered ground, from ND to N IL (near zero in N IN) and the freeze line dipped to the Central Gulf States. Park Rapids, Minnesota reached 34F and Muscle Shoals, Alabama 24F...Tallassee, Florida 30F.

Next week temperatures will be far above freezing across the Plains and Rockies (50s F in SD...70s in Kansas!). Snow melt will be widespread as the nation warms coast to coast.

After several snow producing clippers (light) across the N and E, in ND, MN ,IA, WI and IL over the next 5 days, the next chance for C and S Plains moisture is a week away, potentially crossing KS and NE at that time with rain and some snow. February 9...Midwest Snowstorm?
