Task 7 For task 7, I was to create gather quantitative data, through the use of questionnaires, that I gave out

to members of my target audience (16-21 years of age, male and female, likes indie-pop). I distributed 20 questionnaires. Below are the questions that were on the questionnaires and a summary of what answers were given. The number in brackets indicates how many people chose that answer.

1)

Are you aged 16-21, and like indie-pop music? a. Yes (20) b. No (0)

100% of people answered yes, to being aged 16-21, and like indie-pop music. 2) What indie-pop artists do you currently listen to? i. Artic Monkeys (6) ii. The Killers (6) iii. Mumford and Sons (5) iv. The Kooks (4) v. Fun. (5)

These are the top 50% of artists that were filled in. These are the artists that were put down, ordered by popularity. All of these artists belong to the indie-pop genre. 3) What attracts you to indie-pop music? a. The lyrics of the songs (8) b. The instruments and vocals used (12) c. The image of the genre (5) d. The artists/bands (8) e. Other (specify below) (0)

From this, I can see that the most popular reason as to why these people listen to indie-pop music is the instruments and vocals used. The lyrics of the songs come second, along with the actual artists themselves. The image of the genre is at the bottom. This makes it obvious that the sound of the artists is more important than the image of the artist.

4)

How much would you be willing to pay for a music magazine? a. Nothing (0) b. Less than 1 (2) c. 1-2 (8) d. 2-3 (6) e. 3-4 (3) f. More than 4 (1)

From this, I can see that 8 out of the 20 people I asked would pay 1-2 for a magazine. I can also see that exactly 50% of the people I asked would pay less than 1-2. This means that over 50% of the people would pay over 2. 5) Do you currently buy/read a music magazine? a. Yes (If yes, please do QUESTION 6) (10) b. No (If no, please do QUESTION 7) (10)

From this question, I can see that exactly 50% read magazines, and 50% dont. 6) Specify which magazine(s) do you buy and/or read i. Brumnotes ii. The Fly iii. Kerrang iv. NME v. Rocksound

From the 50% of the people who answers YES to question 5, these were the magazines that they put for question 6. The reasons they listened to them are below: 7) Posters Interviews Bands they like Interesting Latest news Gossip Updates on tours Focus on smaller bands (Brumnotes) Why dont you buy or read music magazines? a. I dont really know much about them (0) b. They dont interest me (1) c. They dont seem to be aimed at people like me (1) d. Theyre too expensive (2) e. I dont buy/read any magazines (6)

Out of the 50% of people who said NO you question 5, these are the results of what they answered for question 7. From this, I can see that the main reason they dont buy or read music magazines is because they simply dont buy/read any magazines. They also put that they dont interest them, they dont seem to be aimed at people like them, and that theyre too expensive. 8) What would encourage you to buy a music magazine? a. Free gifts (6) b. Competitions (win CDs, tickets, etc) (1) c. Exclusive news and interviews (6) d. Dates of upcoming gigs (7) e. Cheap price (4)

From these results, I can see that the most encouraging factor for the people I surveyed to buy a music magazine is the dates of upcoming gigs. Free gifts and exclusive news and interviews are also as equally important. The cheap price and competitions are also slightly important. 9) Which of the following magazine covers do you find the most eye-catching/appealing?

A (3)

B (6)

C (8)

D (3)

It seems that the most popular cover here is C. This question could have actually been much better. I believe that people would have perhaps chosen the particular magazine cover they chose, mainly down to the artist on the cover. I should have specified to not take who they are into account. 10) Which of the following images would you like to see on the front of a magazine? 1 (6) 2 (4) (5) (6) (4) (8) 3 (5) (4) (4) (8) (10) (4) 4 (2) (5) 5 (2) (6) (5) (4)

0 Several images (1) One main image of key artist/band Musical instruments/props Bright colours Dark colours (2)

(5)

From these results, I can see that It much preferred for several images to be kept to a low. They also prefer it to be of one, main image. The people I surveyed are also average on the use of musical instruments/props. Bright colours and dark colours are also average, meaning there should be a balance between the two. 11) What contents would you like to see in this magazine? 0 Gig guides General info Gossip Latest news 1 2 (5) (8) (6) (15) 3 (15) (12) (10) (3)

(2)

(2) (2)

Fashion

(3)

(6)

(7)

(4)

From this, I can see that gig guides, general info and gossip, are the most popular things for a magazine to contain. Latest news and fashion comes second in importance. 12) What would you like to see in a double page spread article that would feature in this magazine? 1 (6) (4) (3) (3) 2 (3) (3) (5) (7) 3 (5) (3) (6) (5) (7) 4 (5) (5) (3) (4) (3) 5 (10) (3) (3) (3)

0 Interview Indie rock/pop developments Musical (1) instruments/props Bright colours Dark colours

Finally, from this question, I can see that the most popular thing to go on a double page spread would be an interview. Musical instruments/props takes average importance, and bright colours are favoured over dark colours. People who took the questionnaire also wrote down what specific images they would like to see. They put: New bands Popular bands Interesting photos.
