5th Grade Northeast Geography Project

This lesson requires 5th grade students to research the Northeast region of the United States. Students will be divided into 10 groups, with each group researching one of the 10 states in the region. Using approved online resources, the students will identify key facts about their assigned state, such as climate, economy, geography, history and culture. They will then create a slideshow using Animoto to showcase what they learned. The slideshow must include photos sourced from Flickr and captioned with attribution. Upon completing their state research and slideshow, the groups will compile their individual presentations into a single class video about the Northeast region.

Internet Enhanced Lesson - 5th Grade US Geography Project Northeast Region

Overview: This lesson will give students the opportunity to research all of the states in the Northeast Region and create a video slideshow using Animoto to demonstrate knowledge learned and skills mastered. Objectives (VA STANDARD NAG 5.3a-e: Regional Study: The American Northeast): Students will identify 10 states (and capitals) in the Northeast Region Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware

Students will identify the following characteristics of each state Climate, Economic Activity, Physical Features, Natural Resources, Historical Events, and Cultural Events

Students will create a class Animoto video Including 4-5 pictures of each state, 1-2 text slides

Lesson Description: This activity is a culminating activity for students to synthesize and make real world connections to the Northeast Region states. The instructor will place the class into 10 groups (one for each state). Students will complete the collaborative Google Doc research sheet (see below) to answer questions relating to characteristics of each state. All pictures must be obtained using a creative commons search with Flickr. Photos must have attribution within the slide or on a common reference slide at the end of the show. These may be saved locally on workstations or on the network drive. Students may use the following resources for research: World Book Online, Google Earth, and the U.S. Geography app that is installed on our iPads. World Book Online is an electronic encyclopedia with great information. Google Earth is a software program that one can use to obtain information through different access points and information sources embedded within the program. The U.S. Geography app has information for all 50 states so you can focus on the specific states for this project. When all information is obtained, and pictures are saved, groups will login to the class Animoto site. Groups will create a text slide with their state name (and capital), upload pictures, and add a second (or third) text slide with the research information added to it. When all groups are finished, the class will decide on a theme for the show before publishing.
