Editing techniques have been introduced with film becoming popular in the 20th century.

The Butterfly effects plot is centered around the Chaos Theory. The Chaos Theory explains the action that may have been insignificant in the past, drastically affecting events unfolding in the future. The nickname for the Chaos Theory is also known as a butterfly effect, which the film is named after. Overall the film is a psychological thriller because it captures the viewers mind with twists and turns in the plot. The Butterfly Effect is a film that chooses to use editing techniques to show transitioning between Evans past and present time. These editing techniques help the viewer relate to the confusion within Evans mind and the chaotic state that he can no longer recover from. The movie opens up with butterflies fluttering on the screen which is a symbolic element representing the Chaos Theory. Eventually the butterfly flies into the center of the brain. This technique is known as graphic matching where the cinematographer makes a connection between Evans mind and the chaos that it is holding. To help the viewer identify with the event of Evans power being activated, the editor uses a dissolve transition to help viewers experience the hallucinatory state that Evan is similarly in. This build suspense and combines with the scenes where Evan is travelling to the past nicely. Another transition that the movie uses is the reverse shot which is employed when there is dialogue between people. The cinematographer uses this to identify who an actor or actress is talking to. This allows the viewer to be clear on who the dialogue is being presented to. The film also employs the soviet montage to help correlate the overwhelming information that Evan is receiving. This movie utilizes this during the times Evan returns back to the present. The combination of still images of faces and events help the viewer understand the overwhelming pain is receiving during his seizures. Lastly, the montage also helps the movie flow nicely for the viewer, as it helps understand the events that have occurred as his life is being face forwarded from the past. Overall, the editing helps The Butterfly Effect transition between Evans states of times. It not only helps the viewer identify with Evans mind but what is currently happening as well. Lastly the editing

techniques enhance the experience for the viewer because it builds good suspense by employing these engaging techniques to keep the viewer on his or her seat.
