Computer Storage and Memory Notes (P.
5)
For Primary Five Learners
1. What is Computer Storage?
Computer storage is the place where a computer keeps information, data, pictures, videos,
music, and programs for future use.
2. What is Memory?
Memory is the part of a computer that temporarily stores information while the computer is
working. It helps the computer work quickly.
3. Examples of Computer Storage Devices
- Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
- Solid State Drive (SSD)
- USB Flash Disk
- Memory Card
- CD and DVD
4. Why Do We Measure Memory and Storage?
Computers store different amounts of information. We use storage units to measure how
much information can be stored.
5. Storage Units
Bit (b) – the smallest unit of data.
Byte (B) – made up of 8 bits.
Kilobyte (KB) – about 1,024 bytes.
Megabyte (MB) – about 1,024 KB.
Gigabyte (GB) – about 1,024 MB.
Terabyte (TB) – about 1,024 GB.
6. Easy Memory Measurement Table
8 bits = 1 Byte
1,024 Bytes = 1 KB
1,024 KB = 1 MB
1,024 MB = 1 GB
1,024 GB = 1 TB
7. Examples in Daily Life
- A short text document may use a few KB.
- A photo may use a few MB.
- A movie may use several GB.
- A computer hard disk may store hundreds of GB or several TB.
8. Importance of Computer Storage
- Saves files and documents.
- Keeps photos and videos.
- Stores computer programs.
- Allows information to be used later.
9. Revision Questions
1. What is computer storage?
2. What is memory?
3. Name three storage devices.
4. What does KB stand for?
5. Which is bigger, MB or GB?
6. How many bytes make one KB?
