BÀI 5: SPEAKING TO PERSUADE
Slide Content (Script)
1 Welcome everyone to Unit 5: SPEAKING TO PERSUADE
2 In this unit, we’re going to explore three essential elements of persuasive
speaking: building rapport with the audience, using persuasive strategies, and
the power of storytelling in connecting with the audience.
3 First, let’s talk about building rapport. Rapport refers to the relationship and
connection we establish with the audience. As a speaker, we want to make
our audience feel comfortable, valued, and engaged.
So, here are some techniques for you.
- First, you can establish connections by using eye contact and body
language to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
- Next, you can find a common ground to share relatable experiences or
values to bridge the gap between you and your audience.
- Moreover, your active listening shows your genuine interest in
audience feedback and respond thoughtfully to build trust.
4 In the persuasive use of language, politeness is very important. We should
avoid Face-Threatening Acts which can be offensive to the audience and
utilize Face-Saving Acts to minimize face threats.
5 Some actions such as orders, requests, threats, warnings, disapproval, and
taboo topics might threaten the negative face as they put some pressure on
the listeners. However, a concern, an apology, or an appreciation, as a face-
saving act, helps to enhance the listeners’ positive self-image.
6 After building rapport and setting a positive atmosphere, we will analyze
some persuasive strategies you can use to influence your audience
effectively.
First, you can establish credibility or build trust.
- Showcase Expertise by highlighting relevant qualifications and experience
to establish authority on the topic.
- Cite Reputable Sources
Reference trusted experts and studies to support the arguments.
- Demonstrate Knowledge by showing a deep understanding of your subject
through well-researched, insightful content.
7 Next, you can use reasoning effectively as a persuasion skill.
- In Inductive Reasoning, you will reach a general conclusion based on
specific examples, facts, statistics, and opinions.
- In Deductive Reasoning, you will reason from a general statement or
principle
- In Causal Reasoning, you will relate two or more events to conclude that
one or more of the events caused the others.
8 Now, we will see how we can incorporate storytelling into our speeches to
makes the messages more relatable and powerful.
9 If you want to share a story, please remember the following tips.
Choose A Relevant Narrative
Select stories that directly relate to your message and your target audience.
Structure The Story
Use a clear beginning, middle, and end. Build tension and resolution to
maintain interest.
Evoke Emotions
Use descriptive language and personal anecdotes to create an emotional
connection with the audience.
10 In the last part of our lesson, we will discuss more about speaker persona.
Have you heard about the term “speaker persona” before? Speaker persona
refers to how a speaker presents themselves to the audience. There might be
different types of speaker personas.
Here are some examples.
INFORMATIVE SPEAKERS are those who aim to educate their audience
on a specific topic. They often present facts, data, and insights. They can be
educators, trainers, or conference presenters.
11 PERSUASIVE SPEAKERS are those who aim to convince the audience to
adopt a particular viewpoint or take action. They include politicians, activists,
salespeople, etc.
12 MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS are those who aim to inspire and energize
their audience, often sharing personal stories of overcoming challenges. They
can be found in seminars, and conferences.
13 ENTERTAINING SPEAKERS are those who aim to provide enjoyment and
amusement. Comedians and storytellers often engage the audience through
humor and narratives.
I have just introduced to you some types of speakers. There will be more than
these.
14 There are certain characteristics that some speakers naturally have, and others
plan to develop to create their unique personas. Among several speaker traits
are charisma, authenticity, authority, expertise, approachability, charm,
humor, strength, credibility, and so on. Dr. Nick Morgan, a communication
theorist and coach, said some speakers with traits that they didn’t know they
had or did not want to develop them since they took them for granted.
Indeed, it’s essential to uncover and develop speaker persona. How do you
expect the audience to talk about you when your speech is over? Funny?
Strong? Relatable? Engaging? Knowledgeable? Energetic? Smart?
A speaker persona can be a mixture of them.
15 Be yourself.
Developing your unique persona(s).
Remember, the audience can tell if you’re being genuine or just following a
script or copying someone else. When you speak with your true passion and
genuine emotion, you’re more likely to connect with your audience on a
deeper level.
About myself as a speaker, I would like to demonstrate: Authenticity,
Approachability, and Credibility.
16 I hope the lesson of Unit 5 has given you some ideas to think and take actions
to improve your public speaking skill.
17 I look forward to seeing your presentations in the assignments.
Thank you very much!
