Inside a computer
SMPS
SMPS stands for Switched Mode Power Supply. It is an important part of a computer because it supplies
electrical power to all the internal components. The SMPS is usually fixed inside the computer cabinet.
Without an SMPS, the computer cannot work properly.
The main function of an SMPS is to convert AC (Alternating Current) into DC (Direct Current). The
electricity that comes from a wall socket is AC, but computer components need DC power to operate.
Therefore, the SMPS converts the AC supply into suitable DC voltages and provides them to different parts of
the computer.
Working of SMPS
The working of an SMPS can be explained in simple steps. First, the AC power from the main supply enters
the SMPS. It is converted into DC by a rectifier. The DC power is then switched at a high frequency using
electronic switching devices. After that, the voltage is adjusted according to the requirements of the computer.
Finally, the output is filtered and regulated to provide a stable DC supply.
Different computer components require different voltages. For example, the SMPS provides 12 V, 5 V, and
3.3 V outputs. These voltages are supplied to the motherboard, processor, storage devices, cooling fans,
graphics card, and other components through different cables and connectors.
Main Functions of SMPS
The important functions of an SMPS are:
1. Converts AC to DC: It converts the AC power from the mains into DC power required by the
computer.
2. Provides different voltages: It supplies the required voltage levels to different computer components.
3. Maintains stable power: It keeps the output voltage stable even when the input voltage changes
slightly.
4. Protects computer components: It provides protection against problems such as short circuits,
excessive current, and excessive voltage.
5. Saves energy: SMPS is more efficient than traditional power supplies and produces less heat.
Components Connected to SMPS
The SMPS supplies power to almost all major parts of a computer. It provides power to the motherboard,
CPU, hard disk, SSD, graphics card, optical drive, cooling fans, and other devices. Different connectors
are used for these components. For example, the 24-pin connector is generally used for the motherboard,
while SATA power connectors are used for storage devices.
Advantages of SMPS
SMPS has many advantages. It is small in size, lightweight, efficient, and reliable. It produces less heat and
consumes less electrical energy. It also protects computer hardware from electrical problems. Because of these
advantages, SMPS is widely used in desktop computers and other electronic devices.
Motherboard
A motherboard is the main circuit board of a computer. It is also called the main board or system board. It
is one of the most important parts of a computer because all major components are connected to it. The
motherboard allows different parts of the computer to communicate with each other and work together.
The motherboard is usually a large printed circuit board (PCB) placed inside the computer cabinet. It contains
different slots, sockets, chips, connectors, and circuits. Components such as the CPU, RAM, storage devices,
graphics card, and other expansion cards are connected to the motherboard.
Main Functions of a Motherboard
The motherboard performs several important functions:
1. Connects Computer Components:
It provides connections for the CPU, RAM, hard disk, SSD, graphics card, keyboard, mouse, and other
devices.
2. Provides Communication:
It allows different components of the computer to exchange data and instructions with each other.
3. Distributes Power:
The motherboard receives power from the SMPS and distributes the required power to various
components connected to it.
4. Supports the CPU:
The CPU is installed in a special socket on the motherboard. The motherboard provides the necessary
connections between the CPU and other components.
5. Supports Memory:
RAM is installed in memory slots on the motherboard. The motherboard allows the processor to access
the data stored in RAM.
6. Provides Expansion Slots:
Expansion slots allow additional devices such as graphics cards, sound cards, and network cards to be
installed.
Main Parts of a Motherboard
A motherboard contains several important parts:
CPU Socket: It is used to install the processor.
RAM Slots: These slots are used to install RAM modules.
Expansion Slots: Used for installing graphics cards and other expansion cards.
Chipset: It helps control communication between the processor, memory, storage, and other devices.
Storage Connectors: SATA and other connectors are used to connect storage devices.
Power Connectors: They receive power from the SMPS.
BIOS/UEFI: It contains firmware that helps start the computer and checks the hardware during the
boot process.
Input/Output Ports: USB, audio, network, display, and other ports are provided for connecting
external devices.
Importance of Motherboard
The motherboard acts as a central platform for all the major hardware components of a computer. The
performance and compatibility of a computer depend partly on the type of motherboard used. For example, a
motherboard must support the particular type of CPU and RAM being installed.
A good motherboard provides enough slots and ports for future upgrades. It also helps ensure proper
communication between different hardware components.
Ports and Interfaces
Ports and interfaces are important parts of a computer that allow different hardware devices to connect and
communicate with the computer. They are mainly used to connect input devices, output devices, storage
devices, networks, and other peripherals to the computer.
A port is a physical connection point available on a computer. Devices such as a keyboard, mouse, printer,
monitor, pen drive, and speakers can be connected through different ports. An interface is the method or
standard through which two devices communicate and exchange data.
Types of Computer Ports
There are different types of ports used in computers. Some common ports are:
1. USB Port
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is one of the most commonly used ports. It is used to connect devices such as
keyboards, mice, pen drives, external hard disks, smartphones, and printers. USB ports can also provide power
to connected devices.
2. HDMI Port
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is used to connect a computer to a monitor, television, or
projector. It can transmit both high-quality video and audio through a single cable.
3. VGA Port
VGA (Video Graphics Array) is an older type of video port. It is mainly used to connect a computer to a
monitor or projector. Unlike HDMI, VGA normally carries only video signals.
4. Ethernet Port
The Ethernet port, also called an RJ-45 port, is used to connect a computer to a wired network. It allows the
computer to access the internet or communicate with other computers through a network cable.
5. Audio Port
Audio ports are used to connect devices such as headphones, microphones, and speakers. Many computers
use 3.5 mm audio connectors for these devices.
6. DisplayPort
DisplayPort is a digital interface used to connect a computer to monitors and other display devices. It can
transmit high-quality video and audio.
7. Power Port
The power port is used to connect the computer or laptop to an electrical power source. In desktop computers,
the power supply is connected to the computer through a power connector.
Types of Interfaces
Interfaces can be classified according to the type of connection and communication they provide. Common
interfaces include:
USB interface: Used for connecting many types of peripheral devices.
SATA interface: Used to connect storage devices such as hard disk drives and SATA SSDs.
PCI Express (PCIe): Used to connect high-speed expansion devices such as graphics cards and
network cards.
Ethernet interface: Used for wired network communication.
Wireless interfaces: Technologies such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth allow devices to communicate
without physical cables.
Importance of Ports and Interfaces
Ports and interfaces make it possible to connect different devices to a computer. They allow data transfer,
audio and video transmission, networking, and power supply. They also make it easier to upgrade a
computer and add new devices according to the user's requirements.
Expansion Cards
An expansion card is a circuit board that is inserted into an expansion slot on the motherboard of a
computer. It is used to add new functions or improve the capabilities of a computer. Expansion cards are also
known as expansion boards or adapter cards.
The motherboard already provides many basic functions, but sometimes a user needs additional features or
better performance. Expansion cards allow these features to be added without replacing the entire
motherboard.
Purpose of Expansion Cards
The main purpose of an expansion card is to increase the capabilities of a computer. For example, if a
computer does not have a powerful graphics system, a graphics card can be installed to improve its ability to
display images, videos, and games.
Expansion cards are connected to the motherboard through special slots, most commonly PCI Express
(PCIe) slots in modern computers. Once installed, the operating system and required drivers allow the
computer to use the card.
Types of Expansion Cards
There are several types of expansion cards used in computers:
1. Graphics Card (Video Card)
A graphics card processes images, videos, and graphics and sends the output to the monitor. It is
especially useful for gaming, video editing, 3D design, and other graphics-intensive tasks.
2. Sound Card
A sound card improves the computer's ability to process audio. It can provide better sound quality and
additional connections for speakers, headphones, and microphones.
3. Network Interface Card (NIC)
A network card allows a computer to connect to a network. It may provide a wired Ethernet
connection or, in some cases, wireless networking.
4. Wi-Fi Card
A Wi-Fi expansion card allows a desktop computer to connect to wireless networks without using an
Ethernet cable.
5. Capture Card
A capture card is used to receive and record video and audio from another device, such as a camera or
gaming console. It is commonly used for video recording and live streaming.
6. Storage Controller Card
This type of card provides additional connections for storage devices and can help manage multiple
hard drives or SSDs.
Advantages of Expansion Cards
Expansion cards have several advantages. They allow users to upgrade and customize a computer according
to their needs. They can improve the performance of specific functions, such as graphics, sound, networking,
or storage. They can also provide features that are not available on the motherboard.
Another advantage is that expansion cards can often be replaced or upgraded when better technology becomes
available. This can extend the useful life of a computer.
How an Expansion Card Works
An expansion card is inserted into a suitable slot on the motherboard. The computer supplies power and
allows data to travel between the card and other components. After installation, the appropriate device driver
is installed so that the operating system can recognize and use the card.
Ribbon Cables
A ribbon cable is a type of cable used inside a computer to connect different hardware components. It
consists of several thin wires arranged parallel to each other in a flat, ribbon-like shape. Because of its flat
shape, it is called a ribbon cable.
Ribbon cables are mainly used for connecting internal devices such as hard disk drives, floppy disk drives,
optical drives, and other components to the motherboard or controller. They help transfer data and,
depending on the cable and connector, may also carry control signals.
Structure of a Ribbon Cable
A ribbon cable contains many individual wires placed side by side. The wires are usually covered by a flat
plastic insulating material. One edge of the cable is often marked with a different colour, commonly red, to
identify the first wire or Pin 1. This makes it easier to connect the cable correctly.
Ribbon cables are available with different numbers of wires, such as 40-wire and 80-wire cables. Older
IDE/PATA hard drives and optical drives commonly used 40-pin ribbon cables. An 80-wire IDE cable has
additional grounding wires between the signal wires to help reduce interference and improve data reliability.
Uses of Ribbon Cables
Ribbon cables have been used for various purposes inside computers. Some common uses include:
1. Connecting Storage Devices:
Older IDE/PATA hard disk drives and optical drives were connected to the motherboard using ribbon
cables.
2. Connecting Floppy Drives:
Older computers used ribbon cables to connect floppy disk drives to the motherboard.
3. Connecting Internal Components:
Ribbon cables can be used to connect certain internal devices and controllers.
4. Data Transfer:
They allow data and control signals to travel between the motherboard and connected devices.
Advantages of Ribbon Cables
Ribbon cables have several advantages. Their flat and flexible design makes them easy to arrange inside a
computer cabinet. They can contain many wires in a small space and are relatively inexpensive. Their
organized wire arrangement also makes it easier to connect multiple signal lines using a single cable.
Disadvantages of Ribbon Cables
Ribbon cables also have some disadvantages. Because the wires are placed close together, they can sometimes
experience electrical interference or signal problems, especially at higher speeds. They can also block
airflow inside a computer cabinet because of their wide, flat shape. Modern computers therefore use more
advanced and compact cables for many internal connections.
Ribbon Cables in Modern Computers
Ribbon cables were very common in older desktop computers, particularly with IDE/PATA storage devices.
Modern computers mostly use interfaces such as SATA, USB, and other high-speed connections, which
generally use thinner and more flexible cables. As a result, traditional wide ribbon cables are less common in
modern computers.
Memory Chips
A memory chip is a small electronic component used in a computer to store data and instructions. It is
made up of millions of tiny electronic circuits that can store information in the form of binary digits, 0 and 1.
Memory chips are important because the computer needs memory to store data temporarily or permanently
while performing different tasks.
Memory chips are usually made from semiconductor materials, mainly silicon. They are found in devices
such as computers, smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, and many other electronic systems.
Types of Memory Chips
There are two main types of memory used in computers: RAM and ROM.
1. RAM Chips
RAM (Random Access Memory) is a type of temporary memory. It stores the data and instructions that the
computer is currently using. For example, when a user opens a program, the required data is loaded from
storage into RAM so that the CPU can access it quickly.
RAM is called volatile memory because its contents are lost when the computer is switched off.
Common types of RAM include:
DRAM (Dynamic RAM): Commonly used as the main memory in computers.
SRAM (Static RAM): Faster than DRAM and commonly used for cache memory.
2. ROM Chips
ROM (Read-Only Memory) is a type of memory that stores important instructions needed to start and
operate a computer. It is generally non-volatile, which means it can retain information even when the power
is turned off.
Modern computers commonly use forms of rewritable non-volatile memory, such as EEPROM and flash
memory, for firmware storage.
Functions of Memory Chips
Memory chips perform several important functions:
1. Store Data: They store information that the computer needs to process.
2. Store Instructions: They hold instructions required for different operations.
3. Support the CPU: They provide the CPU with quick access to data and instructions.
4. Improve Performance: Fast memory allows the computer to perform tasks more efficiently.
5. Store Firmware: Certain memory chips store firmware or startup instructions required for hardware
operation.
Importance of Memory Chips
Memory chips are essential for the proper functioning of a computer. The CPU continuously reads data and
instructions from memory while performing tasks. If a computer has insufficient or slow memory, its
performance may be affected, especially when running several programs at the same time.
Memory chips are available in different capacities and speeds. Modern computers may have several gigabytes
of RAM, while smaller memory chips may be used for firmware and other specific functions.
Difference Between Memory and Storage
Memory and storage are related but different. RAM is used for temporary working data, while storage
devices such as hard disks and SSDs are used to store data for a longer period. When the computer is turned
off, the data in RAM is normally lost, while data stored on an SSD or hard disk remains available.
Processors
A processor is one of the most important parts of a computer. It is also called the Central Processing Unit
(CPU). The processor acts as the brain of the computer because it performs calculations, processes data, and
controls the activities of other computer components.
The processor receives instructions from programs, processes them, and produces the required results. Every
task performed by a computer, such as opening a file, running a program, browsing the internet, or playing a
video, involves the processor.
Main Functions of a Processor
The main functions of a processor are:
1. Processing Data:
The processor performs mathematical and logical operations on data. It can perform operations such as
addition, subtraction, comparison, and other calculations.
2. Executing Instructions:
The processor reads instructions from memory and executes them one by one. These instructions tell
the computer what task needs to be performed.
3. Controlling Other Components:
The processor controls and coordinates the activities of different parts of the computer, including
memory, storage, and input/output devices.
4. Handling Data:
It receives data, processes it according to the instructions, and sends the results to the appropriate
device or memory location.
Main Parts of a Processor
A processor contains several important parts:
1. Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)
The ALU performs arithmetic and logical operations. Arithmetic operations include addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division. Logical operations include comparisons such as greater than, less than, and equal
to.
2. Control Unit (CU)
The Control Unit controls the operation of the processor. It fetches instructions from memory, interprets
them, and directs other parts of the computer to perform the required operations.
3. Registers
Registers are very small and very fast storage locations inside the processor. They temporarily hold data,
instructions, and intermediate results while the CPU is working.
4. Cache Memory
Cache memory is high-speed memory located in or close to the processor. It stores frequently used data and
instructions so that the CPU can access them quickly.
Types of Processors
Processors can be classified in different ways. Modern computers commonly use multi-core processors. A
multi-core processor has two or more processing cores in a single chip.
Common examples include:
Dual-core: Has two processing cores.
Quad-core: Has four processing cores.
Hexa-core: Has six processing cores.
Octa-core: Has eight processing cores.
Multiple cores allow a processor to handle several tasks more efficiently.
Processor Speed
Processor speed is commonly measured in Hertz (Hz), usually in GHz (Gigahertz) for modern computers. A
higher clock speed can allow a processor to perform more cycles per second, but overall performance also
depends on the processor's architecture, number of cores, cache, and other factors.
Importance of the Processor
The processor is essential for the proper functioning of a computer. A faster and more capable processor can
improve the computer's ability to run applications, perform calculations, and handle multiple tasks. However,
computer performance also depends on other components such as RAM, storage, and graphics hardware.
