Grade 6 Mathematics

Volume 1 Comprehensive Curriculum & Study Guide

Course Overview: This study guide covers the core mathematical competencies outlined in the Grade 6
Volume 1 curriculum. It transitions young learners from foundational concrete arithmetic into foundational
algebraic frameworks, spatial analysis, and advanced numerical operations.

Chapter 1: Integers & The Number System

Students explore numbers beyond zero, mastering the concept of positive and negative values on a
number line.

• Concept: Integers include all whole numbers and their negative opposites {... -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3 ...}.
• The Number Line: Positive integers sit to the right of zero; negative integers sit to the left. Distance
from zero represents absolute value.
• Operational Rules:
- Addition: When signs match, add the absolute values and keep the sign. When signs differ, find the
difference and keep the sign of the larger absolute value.
- Subtraction: Convert to adding the opposite value (e.g., a - b becomes a + (-b)).
Worked Example:
Evaluate: -8 + 5 = -3 (Signs differ: 8 - 5 = 3, keep the negative sign from -8).
Evaluate: -7 + (-9) = -16 (Signs match: 7 + 9 = 16, retain the negative sign).

Chapter 2: Fractions Operations

Extends earlier fractional concepts into advanced multiplication, division, and complex word problem
application.

• Multiplication: Multiply the numerators straight across to form the new numerator, and multiply
denominators straight across for the new denominator.
• Division: Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal (the inverted version) of the second fraction
(commonly known as Keep-Change-Flip).
• Mixed Numbers: Always convert mixed numbers to improper fractions before performing operations.
Worked Example:

Multiply: 3/4 × 1/2 = (3×1)/(4×2) = 3/8

Divide: 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6 (Simplified)

Chapter 3: Decimals Multiplication & Division

Precision computing with multi-digit decimal numbers and standard real-world metric problems.

• Multiplication: Multiply as if they are whole numbers. Count total decimal places in both factors and
move the product's decimal point left by that sum.
• Division: Shift the decimal point of the divisor to make it a whole number. Shift the dividend's decimal
point by the identical number of places. Align the decimal point in the quotient directly above.
Worked Example:
Calculate: 4.8 ÷ 0.4 → Multiply both by 10 → 48 ÷ 4 = 12.
Calculate: 1.2 × 0.3 → Whole calculation: 12 × 3 = 36. Shift 2 decimal places total → 0.36.

Chapter 4: Properties & Algebraic Expressions

Introduction to variable structures and evaluating variables using math laws.

• Commutative Property: Order does not change sum/product (a + b = b + a).

• Associative Property: Grouping does not change sum/product (a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c).
• Distributive Property: a(b + c) = ab + ac.
• Variables & Expressions: Using letters to represent unknown quantities.
Worked Example:
Evaluate expression 3x + 5 when x = 4 → 3(4) + 5 = 12 + 5 = 17.

Chapter 5: Basic Geometric Shapes

Spatial analysis concerning line relationships, angle classifications, and polynomial characteristics.

• Lines: Parallel lines never intersect. Perpendicular lines meet at exactly a 90° right angle.
• Angles: Acute (<90°), Right (90°), Obtuse (>90° and <180°), and Straight (180°).
• Triangles & Quadrilaterals: Classifying polygons by side lengths and internal angles. Internal angles
of any triangle always sum to 180°.
