DIRECTION & DISTANCE — Reasoning Question Bank

Key Concepts & Formulas

1. The 8 Standard Directions 2. Shortest Distance Rule

Going clockwise from North, each direction is 45° apart: When two legs of a journey are perpendicular, the straight-
N → NE → E → SE → S → SW → W → NW → back to N line (shortest) distance between start and end points is
found using the Pythagorean theorem :
• Left of North = West; Right of North = East
Distance = √(x² + y²)
• Opposite direction = 180° turn (e.g. opposite of NE is SW)
where x and y are the two perpendicular legs.

3. Turning Rules 4. Shadow Rule (Sun-based)

• Clockwise turn = movement towards the right • Morning: Sun in the East → shadow points West
• Anticlockwise turn = movement towards the left • Evening: Sun in the West → shadow points East
• 90° turn changes direction by 2 steps on the compass; • At noon, the shadow is shortest and direction may be
45° changes it by 1 step negligible
• A 180° turn always results in the exact opposite direction

Coded Direction Tip: In coded direction questions, every real direction is usually shifted by the same fixed angle (a constant rotation) to
get its code name. Once you find the rotation from one clue, apply the same rotation to answer the question.

Solved Examples

Solved Example 1

Rohan walks 6 km towards North, then turns right and walks 8 km. How far and in which direction is he from his starting point?

1. Plot the path: North 6 km, then a right turn from North means he now faces East, and walks 8 km East.
2. This forms a right-angled triangle with legs 6 km (North) and 8 km (East), the right angle at the turning point.
3. By the Pythagorean theorem, distance = √(6² + 8²) = √(36 + 64) = √100 = 10 km.
4. Since the net movement is North-then-East from the same start, Rohan is 10 km away in the North-East direction from his
starting point.

Answer: 10 km, towards North-East

Solved Example 2

Point A is 5 km West of Point B. Point C is 12 km North of Point B. What is the distance between A and C?

1. Place B at the origin. Then A is 5 km West of B, and C is 12 km North of B — so AB and BC are perpendicular to each other.
2. AB = 5 km, BC = 12 km, and angle ABC = 90°.
3. By Pythagoras: AC = √(AB² + BC²) = √(25 + 144) = √169 = 13 km.

Answer: 13 km

Solved Example 3

Meena is facing South. She turns 90° clockwise, then turns 180°. Which direction is she facing now?

1. Start: facing South.

2. Turn 90° clockwise from South → West.
3. Turn 180° from West → East (180° always lands on the exact opposite direction).

Answer: East

Solved Example 4

In the morning, Arjun was standing facing a pole such that its shadow fell exactly to his right. Which direction was Arjun
facing?

1. The sun rises in the East, so in the morning every shadow points towards the West.
2. We are told the shadow (West) falls to Arjun's right hand side.
3. If West is to a person's right, that person must be facing North (right hand points West only when facing North).

Answer: North

Solved Example 5

In a certain code, North is called 'East', East is called 'South', South is called 'West', and West is called 'North'. Which direction
should a person face to go from South to North as per the code?

1. This code rotates every direction by 90° clockwise: North→East, East→South, South→West, West→North.
2. The question asks: which real direction is now being called 'North' as per the code? From the given mapping, West is called
'North'.
3. So, to go in the direction the code calls 'North', a person must actually walk towards the West.

Answer: West
