MODULE 1-SOLVED PROBLEM

An Electric Vehicle (EV) has the following specifications:

Vehicle mass = 1500 kg

Rolling resistance coefficient =0.015

Frontal area = 2.2 m
Drag coefficient = 0.30

Air density =1.225 kg/m

Vehicle speed =72 km/h
Road gradient = 5%

Vehicle acceleration = 1.5 m/s

Gravitational acceleration =9.81 mn/s
Calculate:

1. Rolling resistance force

2. Gradient resistance force

3. Aerodynamic drag force

4. Acceleration force

5. Total tractive effort required

6. Wheel power required

Solution
Step 1: Write the Given Data

Parameter Value

Vehicle mass (m) 1500 kg

Rolling resistance coefficient (Cr) 0.015

Drag coefficient (Cd) 0.30

Frontal area (A) 2.2 m²

Air density (p) 1.225 kg/m

Parameter Value

Speed 72 km/h

Gradient 5%

Acceleration 1.5 m/s?

9.81 m/s

Step 2: Convert Vehicle Speed into m/s

Given,
72 km/h

Conversion:

72 × 1000
V=
3600
V= 20 m/s

Step 3: Calculate Rolling Resistance

Formula

F, = C, X m ×g

Substitute the values

f, = 0.015 × 1500 x 9.81

First,

1500 x9.81 = 14715

Then,
14715 x 0.015
F, = 220.73N
Rolling Resistance = 220.73 N

Step 4: Calculate Gradient Resistance

Gradient = 5%

Therefore,

sin 0 = 5 = 0.05
100

Formula

F = mg sin 0

Substitute,

F, = 1500 x 9.81 x 0.05

F,=735.75N

Gradient Resistance = 735.75 N

Step 5: Calculate Aerodynamic Drag

Formula

Substitute.

Fa (1225)(0.30) (2.2)(20)
First,

20 = 400

Next,

0.5 x 1.225 = 0.6125

Then,

0.6125 x 0.30 = 0.18375

Next.

0.18375 x 2.2 = 0.40425

Finally.
0.40425 x 400 = 161.7N

Aerodynamic Drag= 161.7N

Step 6: Calculate Acceleration Force

Formula

Fa =ma

Substitute,
F = 1500 × 1.5
F, = 2250N

Acceleration Force = 2250 N

Step 7: Calculate Total Tractive Effort

Formula

F=F+, +Fa+Fa
Substitute,

F = 220.73 + 735.75 + 161.7 + 2250

F, =3368.18N

Total Tractive Effort 3368.18 N

Step 8: Calculate Wheel Power
Formula

P=F,xV

Substitute,
P=3368.18 ×20
P= 67363.6W

Convert into kW

67363.6
P=
1000
P= 67.36kW

Wheel Power Required = 67.36 kW

Final Answers
