Section 1: Basic Relations (Constant Time, Speed & Distance)

Q1. Two bodies A and B start walking towards each other simultaneously from points X and Y
respectively with speeds of 72 km/h and 56 km/h. When they meet each other, it is found that A has
traveled 12 km more than B. Find the total distance between X and Y.
Q2. The distance between points P and Q is 144 km. The speed of A is 18 km/h less than the speed of B.
Both A and B start simultaneously from point P towards point Q. After reaching point Q, B immediately
returns towards point P and meets A at a distance of 24 km from point Q. What is the speed of A?
Q3. A runs 3 1/4 times as fast as B. A gives B a start of 90 metres in a race. How far must the winning
post be from the starting point of A so that A and B reach it at the exact same time?
Q4. A man can reach a certain place in 60 hours. If he reduces his speed by 1/15th of his normal speed,
he can only cover 20 km less in that same time. Find his original speed.

Section 2: Early, Late & Accident Concept Problems

Q5. While going to school, A increased his speed to 13/9th of his actual speed and reached the school 24
minutes earlier than the scheduled time. If the distance between his house and the school is 13 km, find
his actual speed.
Q6. A bus runs 28.56% (28 4/7%) faster than a car. Both start simultaneously from point P and reach
point Q at the same time because there was a halt of 18 minutes for the bus on the way. Find the speed
of the car if the distance between P and Q is 54 km.
Q7. In covering a distance of 3600 km, train A takes 5 hours more than train B. If train A increases its
speed by 25%, it would have taken 4 hours less than train B. Find the speed of train B.
Q8. If a person travels at 48 km/h, he reaches a place 12 minutes earlier than the scheduled time. If he
travels at 36 km/h, he reaches 18 minutes late. What is the distance of the place from his starting point?
Q9. A bus travels from point X to point Y at a constant speed. If it had increased its speed by 15 km/h, it
would have taken 2 hours less. If it had reduced its speed by 5 km/h, it would have taken 1 hour more.
What is the distance between X and Y?
Q10. A student walks from his house to school. If he walks at his normal speed, he reaches in x hours. If
he increases his speed by 5 km/h, spends 16 minutes in a shop on the way, and still reaches 5 minutes
earlier than usual, find the value of x if the distance from his house to the school is 35 km.
Q11. After traveling a distance of 24 km, a car meets with an accident and its speed becomes 4/5th of its
original speed. Consequently, it reaches the destination 36 minutes late. If the accident had occurred 16
km further ahead, the car would have reached only 30 minutes late. Find the total distance traveled by
the car.

Section 3: Average Speed Concept Problems

Q12. A man covers 100 km in 4.5 hours and 120 km in 6.5 hours. Find the average speed of the man for
the entire journey.
Q13. A person travels the first 120 km at a speed of 40 km/h, the next 180 km at 45 km/h, and the final
200 km at 25 km/h. What is his average speed for the entire journey?
Q14. A person completed a certain journey by car. He covered the first 25% of the distance at 5 km/h,
the next 35% of the distance at 7 km/h, and the remaining distance at 4 km/h. What was his average
speed for the whole journey?
Q15. Anand walks from X to Y and back in a certain time at the rate of 14 km/h. If he had walked from X
to Y at the rate of 15 km/h and back from Y to X at the rate of 10 km/h, he would have taken 5 minutes
longer. Find the distance between X and Y.

Section 4: Relative Speed & Motion (Opposite & Same Direction, Police-Thief,
Fog, Meeting)
Q16. The distance between Delhi and Amritsar is 440 km. Train A leaves Delhi at 4:00 PM towards
Amritsar at a speed of 40 km/h. Train B leaves Amritsar at 5:30 PM towards Delhi at a speed of 55 km/h.
At what time will both trains cross/meet each other?
Q17. Car A starts from Darjeeling towards Kolkata and Car B starts from Kolkata towards Darjeeling at
the same time. They meet each other after 6 hours. If the speed of Car A is 25% less than the speed of
Car B, and the difference between their speeds is 15 km/h, find the total distance between Darjeeling
and Kolkata.
Q18. Train A starts from point P towards point Q at 10:00 AM at a speed of x km/h. Train B starts from
point Q towards point P at 12:00 PM at a speed of 60 km/h. Both trains meet each other at 2:00 PM. If
the total distance between P and Q is 264 km, find the value of x.
Q19. Two cars P and Q start simultaneously towards each other from points M and N respectively and
meet after 3 hours. If P travels at 1/3rd of its original speed and Q travels at 2/3rd of its original speed,
they would have met after 7 hours. Find the speed of the faster car if the distance between M and N is
210 km.
Q20. A policeman sees a criminal at a distance of 8 km and starts chasing him. The policeman runs at a
speed of 45 km/h and the criminal runs at 40 km/h in the same direction. How much distance will the
criminal run before being caught?
Q21. A bike driver in dense fog passes a man walking in the same direction at a speed of 5 km/h. The
man could see the bike for 2 minutes up to a distance of 3 km. Find the speed of the bike.
Q22. A car driver traveling at a certain speed notices a bus 40 metres ahead of him. After 20 seconds,
the car is 60 metres ahead of the bus. If the speed of the bus is 38 km/h, find the speed of the car.
Q23. Neetu and Manoj start traveling from Kolkata towards Varanasi at speeds of 20 km/h and 15 km/h
respectively. After 1 hour, Manju starts from Kolkata in the same direction. After some time, Manju
overtakes Manoj, and 1 hour later, Manju overtakes Neetu. Find the speed of Manju.
