Module 2 : Medical Terminology & Anatomy
1. Understanding Prefixes, Suffixes, and Root Words (Psychotherapy
Terms)
Mental health terms are also made up of prefix + root + suffix. Understanding these helps in
decoding diagnoses and procedures.
Common Root Words (Mental Health):
Root Meaning Example Meaning
Psych Mind Psychology Study of the mind
Neur Nerve/Brain Neurology Study of the brain/nervous
system
Phobia Fear Agoraphobia Fear of open spaces
Mood Emotion Mood disorder Problem related to emotions
Therap Treatment Psychotherap Treatment of the mind
y
Common Prefixes:
Prefix Meaning Example
Schizo Split Schizophreni
- a
Hypo- Low Hypomania
Hyper- High/Excessive Hyperactivity
Common Suffixes:
Suffix Meaning Example
-ia Condition Insomnia (sleep condition)
-logy Study of Psychology
XYZ325675RST
2. Brain & Nervous System (Relevant Anatomy)
Although mental health doesn’t involve organs like heart or lungs, it mostly relates to the brain
and nervous system:
🧠 Key Structures:
● Brain – Controls thoughts, emotions, memory
● Spinal Cord – Sends signals between brain and body
● Nervous System – Communication system of the body
Mental health disorders usually involve chemical imbalances or neurological dysfunctions.
3. Disease and Condition Terminology (Mental Health ICD-10)
Your students should become familiar with ICD-10 codes for mental health diagnoses, which
always start with F category:
Condition ICD-10 Code Description
Depression F32.9 Major depressive disorder,
unspecified
Anxiety F41.1 Generalized anxiety disorder
Bipolar Disorder F31.9 Bipolar, unspecified
ADHD F90.9 Attention deficit disorder
PTSD F43.10 Post-traumatic stress disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder F84.0 Developmental condition
4. Common Mental Health Procedures (Used in Coding)
These procedures are commonly coded in CPT (Current Procedural Terminology):
Procedure Description Common CPT
Code
Psychiatric Diagnostic First mental health assessment (no 90791
Evaluation treatment)
Individual Psychotherapy (30 1-on-1 therapy session 90832
mins)
Individual Psychotherapy (45 Medium-length session 90834
mins)
Individual Psychotherapy (60 Full-hour therapy 90837
mins)
Group Therapy Therapist + multiple patients 90853
Family Therapy Therapy with family involved 90846 / 90847
Telehealth modifiers are used when therapy is done remotely (e.g., Modifier 95, POS 10 or
02)
