Question 1 (JUNE 2024 P12 Q4)
(a) Convert 4 kilograms to grams.
(b) Convert 250 cm³ to litres.

Model Answer / Marking Scheme Steps:

(a) 1 kg = 1000 g
4 kg = 4 * 1000 = 4000 g

(b) 1000 cm³ = 1 litre

250 cm³ = 250 / 1000 = 0.25 litres

Answer: (a) 4000 g, (b) 0.25 litres

Question 2 (JUNE 2023 P11 Q13b)

On a map, the distance between Lenton and Mingfield is 4.5 cm.
The actual distance between Lenton and Mingfield is 2.7 km.
Find the scale of the map in the form 1: n.

Model Answer / Marking Scheme Steps:

Actual distance = 2.7 km = 2.7 * 1000 * 100 = 270,000 cm
Map distance = 4.5 cm
Scale = 4.5 : 270,000
Divide both sides by 4.5:
1 : (270,000 / 4.5) = 1 : 60,000

Answer: 1 : 60,000

Question 3 (NOV 2023 P11 Q8)

(a) Convert 78 mm to cm.
(b) Convert 3 m² to cm².

Model Answer / Marking Scheme Steps:

(a) 10 mm = 1 cm
78 mm = 78 / 10 = 7.8 cm
(b) 1 m = 100 cm => 1 m² = (100)² cm² = 10,000 cm²
3 m² = 3 * 10,000 = 30,000 cm²

Answer: (a) 7.8 cm, (b) 30,000 cm²

Question 4 (JUNE 2022 P11 Q17)

The scale of a map is 2 cm to 1 km.
The area of a wood on the map is 6 cm².
Calculate the actual area of the wood in km².

Model Answer / Marking Scheme Steps:

Linear Scale: 2 cm : 1 km
Area Scale: (2 cm)² : (1 km)² => 4 cm² : 1 km²
Map area = 6 cm²
Actual area = 6 / 4 = 1.5 km²

Answer: 1.5 km²

Question 5 (NOV 2021 P11 Q8)

(a) Write 6300 m in kilometres.
(b) Convert 1 cm² to mm².

Model Answer / Marking Scheme Steps:

(a) 1000 m = 1 km
6300 m = 6300 / 1000 = 6.3 km

(b) 1 cm = 10 mm => 1 cm² = (10)² mm² = 100 mm²

A plan of a house is drawn to a scale of 1: 50.
On the plan, the floor area of the kitchen is 30 cm².
Calculate the floor area of the real kitchen. Give your answer in square metres.

Model Answer / Marking Scheme Steps:

Linear Scale = 1 : 50
Area Scale = 1² : 50² = 1 : 2500
Real area in cm² = 30 * 2500 = 75,000 cm²
Convert to m²:
1 m² = 10,000 cm²
Real area = 75,000 / 10,000 = 7.5 m²

Answer: 7.5 m²

Question 8 (NOV 2019 P12 Q9)

A map has a scale of 5 cm to 2 km.
(a) The actual distance between two masts is 14 km.
Calculate the distance, in cm, on the map between the two masts.
(b) On the map, the surface area of a lake is 50 cm².
Calculate the surface area, in km², of the actual lake.
(c) Write the scale 5 cm to 2 km in the form 1: n.

Model Answer / Marking Scheme Steps:

(a) 2 km is represented by 5 cm
1 km is represented by 5 / 2 = 2.5 cm
14 km is represented by 14 * 2.5 = 35 cm

(b) Linear scale: 5 cm : 2 km

Area scale: (5 cm)² : (2 km)² => 25 cm² : 4 km²
50 cm² on map = 50 * (4 / 25) = 2 * 4 = 8 km²

(c) 5 cm : 2 km => 5 cm : 200,000 cm

Divide both sides by 5:
1 : 40,000

Answer: (a) 35 cm, (b) 8 km², (c) 1 : 40,000

Calculate the distance between them on the map.
(b) On the map, a town covers an area of 4 cm².
Calculate its actual area.
(c) Express the scale of the map in the form 1: n.

Model Answer / Marking Scheme Steps:

(a) 5 km is represented by 2 cm
1 km is represented by 2 / 5 = 0.4 cm
9 km is represented by 9 * 0.4 = 3.6 cm

(b) Linear scale: 2 cm : 5 km

Area scale: 4 cm² : 25 km²
Map area = 4 cm² => Actual area = 25 km²

(c) 2 cm : 5 km => 2 cm : 500,000 cm

Find the distance, in centimetres, between the two villages on the map.
(c) The distance between the peaks of two mountains is measured on the map as 76
mm.
Calculate the distance, in kilometres, between the two peaks.

Model Answer / Marking Scheme Steps:

(a) 1 : 25000 means 1 cm : 25000 cm
25000 cm = 25000 / 100 = 250 m = 0.25 km
So d = 0.25

(b) 0.25 km = 1 cm on map

8 km = 8 / 0.25 = 32 cm on map
